While driving along the steep streets of Duluth, MN, Toki Wright puts together some visuals to a track off his BlackMale EP.

In this week’s edition of “Wright About Now” Toki Wright travels to Shenyang, China to perform at the Shenyeng Conservatory of Music. Toki Wright heads up the United States first fully accredited Hip Hop Studies Diploma Program at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN. The trip was part of a cultural exchange that hopes to build bridges between the East and West.

Here’s a live clip from Soultools/Rhymesayers MC Toki Wright’s performance at Lush Life: Interpretations of the American Jazz Canon. Toki reinterprets the Fats Waller classic Black and Blue with the help of Heiruspecs (Atmosphere’s former backing band). Toki Wright will be performing with Sean McPhearson (of Heiruspecs) Tuesday, December 28th at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music in Shenyang, China.

The visuals dropped a little later than they were supposed to, but better later than never right?

The music video for the title track from my album A Different Mirror is an analysis of the power dynamic in the United States. Throughout generations since the onset of the Transatlantic Slave Trade men and women have been forced into a cycle of poverty, abuse, and systemic dependency. A mirror will expose whatever images are put in its path. It is my hope that this video exposes the story of another America, its vicious cycles, and helps to break them down in the name of progress and understanding. – Toki
