okayplayer’s Review of The Roots’ undun

Earlier today at Manhattan’s Legacy Studios, a select group of folks were given the opportunity to listen to The Roots upcoming album (dropping December 6th). Check out what was said for track five below and head to OKP for the rest.

The Jump
Comes in on an abrupt one-beat transition, followed by big, no, HUGE drums and hard-hitting rappity-rap: “If not for these hood inventions / I’d be just another kid with no intentions” and “when he’s tired of running / Through the layers of the onion, he’ll shed a tear…” The chorus has the feel of a bluesy 70s rock song that you would hear in the soundtrack of a Martin Scorcese flick when the chips are down: “We all on a journey…but on the other side that’s when we settle up the score.” After the third chorus the pitch wavers uncomfortably on the hi-hat and the drums sloooooww doooown.

The Roots – undun (Tracklist)

The Roots’ 13th album drops December 6th, and the homie Aqua let loose the tracklisting for the project.

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

2. Make My f. Big K.R.I.T.
3. One Time
4. Kool On
5. The Jump

10. Redford

Track two – which needs to come out immediately – is slated to be the first single. Nice. SHAKE UPDATE: And just like that, track 2 is here.

?uestlove On The Roots’ New Album (Video)

During a brief conversation with MTV at Jay-Z’s recent charity event, ?uest gives a little more detail on what we can expect with The Roots thirteenth album, UNDUN, dropping December 6th via Def Jam.

It is our first concept album. Mostly, our albums are thematic, but this is our first album in which it’s an actual narrative, so sort of like a movie without visuals; kind of like a storybook record.

Most rappers, poverty leads them to whatever the public determines and it really prevents them from being real artists, because a lot of artists I meet are like, ‘I wish we could be like y’all… We just create music on our own accord.
