Last week I was talking to a friend about music videos, or more specifically, the lack of creativity in music videos as of late. Granted, the combination of low production budgets for music videos thanks to the industry’s utter failing to keep up with the Joneses, ultimately causing the bottom to fall out from under them and – rather than accepting that their narcissistic, stubborn unwillingness to accept and try change from their old model was at the very least partially responsible for that end result – now wag their fingers at and label the very same people they now fire off their products to in the hopes that they will at most times freely promote their wares to a larger audience as the scapegoat, as well as the fact that it’s pretty much a moot point to spend money on what is essentially a 4-minute-long advertisement for an album in this day and age, means that the days of extravagant videos such as Xzibit’s “What U See Is What U Get” or Diddy’s “Victory” are long over… but that doesn’t mean that rappers have to only resort to “rapping aggressively in front of a camera” for four minutes.
Peep, for example, this old behind-the-scenes clip for The Pharcyde’s “Drop” which was a relatively cheap music video that, ironically, featured the group aggressively rapping in front of a camera for about four minutes while a bunch of random shit was going on around them… except that they filmed the entire thing backwards. That amount of detail – not to mention the countless hours it took for them to memorize their own song in reverse – is something that today’s ADD-addled generation will, sadly, likely never do anytime soon, and is proof that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to make a great music video.

Gummy Soul and Amerigo Gazaway combine the best of the two legendary factions for this mash-up project. Why hasn’t this been done sooner is anyone’s guess, but better later than never right? Tracklist and link down bottom.
Gummy Soul is combining the best of ATCQ and The Pharcyde – essentially mixing 90s boho rap’s chocolate and peanut butter together – for this upcoming mashup compilation…
Utilizing the original Jazz, Soul and Funk recordings sampled throughout A Tribe Called Quest’s extensive catalogue, Gazaway recreates classic productions – pairing his reinterpreted instrumentals with select vocals from West Coast “golden era” favorites, The Pharcyde.
If it sounds like this, then it may be a very good project.

Continuing promo for his latest single, “From The Soul,” Amiri took it back… way back. Dubbed the “Throwback Remix”, Amiri laced the track with a smooth 80s groove. Then to top it all off, Bootie Brown from the infamous hip hop group The Pharcyde jumped in and dropped a verse! Both versions of “From The Soul” will be serviced to radio this week to keep you vibin’ all summer long. Download the remix for free today!

DJ Semtex provides footage of the concert most of us had the chance to enjoy during the summer. If you didn’t go, you missed out. Even if you attended the Denver show like I did.

As many of you know, I hit a few Rock The Bells last month. What many don’t know was that I spent a good month or so trying to track down all four members of The Pharcyde for this special interview, and I had to hit two of those festivals just to complete this piece. When you guys aren’t busy downloading all the free stuff we shill here, I invite you all to read about my exploits as well and the interview I did.
