The Paris production duo, The Funk League, is comprised of Hugo and Soulbrother Suspect. Together, as The Funk League, they are preparing to release their album “Funky As Usual” on January 24th via Favorite Recordings. “Funky As Usual” was recently released in France, but the worldwide release is January 24th.
“Funky As Usual” is ode to the golden age / boom-bap hip hop era which features some of that era’s elite including Large Professor, Diamond D, Sadat X, A.G., Gift of Gab and others. The Funk League brings back the SP 1200 sound without sounding outdated and throwback.
In preparation for the release, today marks the US release of the official music video for the song “On & On” featuring Sadat X. Over a feel good funk inspired track, Sadat X rewinds the clock and brings back some of the older times in NY and in hip hop history.
This video was shot in two different continents. Jay Billion and Sadat X (Brand Nubian) shot their parts in BKNY, while Eeva recorded and filmed her parts in Belgrade, Serbia. This song is blending what many call real hip hop with the future incarnation of where the music is headed.
The Queens duo is back as they get set to drop their third lp, Raising The Bar, which drops on July 19th through SoulSpazm digital. We’re pleased to present their first official leak off the lp, which is titled “Taking It All” and features Sadat X and J-Love.
Fresh off their recent collaboration for J Rawls’ new album, The Hip Hop Affect, Rawls and Sadat speak on how the genre has affected their personal lives.
Brand Nubian meets the Poor Righteous Teachers… with J Rawls on the production? Oh yeah, this is dope! Off Rawls’ upcoming album, The Hip Hop Affect, dropping May 17th. Features to include Edo G, Diamond D, Rhymefest, Copywrite, Count Bass D, Tanya Morgan, El Da Sensei, J Sands (of Lone Catalysts), John Robinson and more.

This week’s features Brand Nubian’s Sadat X talking about the discovery of crack, aka “the greatest thing ever,” back when shit was legal(!). The Great Derek X also breaks down some of his “Slow Down” lyrics, and let us know more about a Bronx dude named Boy George (cf. Cormega’s “Glory Days”) a former neighbor of his who once rented his crib to Calvin Klein for a perfume shooting…
I don’t know about crack being the “greatest thing ever…”
