Lil Troy’s classic is the backdrop as Mike Dreams reminisces of his older brother who was gunned down six years ago today. R.I.P.

6 years ago today (April 8th), my big brother, Garey Hannah Jr. a.k.a “J.B”, was tragically gunned down in South Minneapolis after being robbed at gunpoint and refusing to give up the money. Growing up, I was able to have talks with him over the years, and tried to grasp and understand the direction his life was going, and where he saw himself to be. Overall, he was a complex individual, who had ambitions and much more things to accomplish, but had that chance to make a turn around and have progression, taken away. He served time early on in his adult years, and once he was out, I saw how society just seemed to never give him a break. It’s so hard in this country to try and get ahead once you’ve made a mistake. I will always remember him, for his insight, his advice to me to not do the things he did, and his love for music, hip-hop and rap music.

The project, which includes previously-released singles Success Is…, We’ll Be Alright, Gettin’ Ours, We Goin’ Worldwide, and Hip Hope Anthem (Hello World) is a “reflection of what I know as reality,” says Dreams. “The theory is simple: sanity in life is when you have the correct balance of reality and dreams; this allows you to know what you can achieve.”

Last leak off Mike Dreams’ upcoming album Dreamer’s Poetry, dropping February 8th.

“Hip Hope Anthem (Hello World)” has a small story behind it. I began writing the record in 2008 while attending Soundset in downtown Minneapolis. Dilated Peoples performed “This Way”, one of my favorite records ever. It was a mad inspiring performance and right after that, right there at Soundset, I began writing the lyrics. I finished the record later after connecting with Minneapolis producer Cory Grindberg for the production after I originally heard it on a “Hello Brooklyn” remix he did, from an American Gangster remix album. The guitar solo on the third versewas done by Minnesota’s Mike Fry.

Before he releases his upcoming album (Dreamer’s Poetry, presented by the dopehouse and DJBooth.net) on February 8th, Mike Dreams decided to let loose of a tagless version of his mixtape he dropped earlier this year while still under the moniker Young Son.
