Outside of his contribution to The Black Opera’s latest jam (and the Oddisee remix), we haven’t heard much from Mayer Hawthorne as of late (unless that mysterious Tuxedo EP). Thankfully that changes today as the the Ann Arbor born musician drops off the first single off his upcoming album, Where Does This Door Go, out July 16th.
Yo Oddisee, where’s that new Diamond District album? Until that happens, we can enjoy his take on The Black Opera’s already-dope-as-hell single. Libretto: Of King Legendis out now.
Whether or not he was a part of that Tuxedo project remains to be seen, but Haircut has let loose a new track under his regular moniker for the masses.
I saw this project briefly fly across my timeline last week, but completely forgot about it until I got an email from a friend about it a few minutes ago. Rumor has it that this is actually the duo of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, but nobody’s been able to verify it. Regardless, enjoy the three-track quickstrike freelease down bottom.

The Black Opera brings you their latest bit, a love song of sorts, entitled “Queen of Hearts”. The track is a mellow introspective rundown of all the things that “She” is, or could be, to her King. Who is “She”? Decide for yourself. The Black Opera and fellow creator Mayer Hawthorne, who is featured on the hook of this track, each have their own interpretation of the perfect “Queen of Hearts”.
Mayer Hawthorne, who has coined his new-school Motown sound, adds a spicy eloquence to the track while the TBOG’s speak on who their ideal Kueen is, and who she isn’t. Lines like “She could be my Queen to be” are greatly opposed by others such as “Im not tryina make a hoe a baby momma, drama”. This song is more than your average Valentine’s Day bullshit. Treat your girl to the MP3 of “Queen of Hearts”, not dinner at the Sizzler tonight, player.
Message From The Black Opera:
“While in search of his Queen of Hearts, or some would say, KUEENZ of Heart, the King was not very trusting with any of his beautiful possibilities. Once he learned how to trust himself, then and only then, was he able to trust and L O V E Without A Limit.”
Just under two weeks ago, the Detroit collective (made up of Buff1 Jamall Bufford, 14KT, Tres Styles, Vaughan T, Vital, Grand Champ and DJ Haircut aka Mayer Hawthorne) released Steezy’s Red Album. A reworking of the original 2011 release with features from Juice, Invincible, Finale and others. Tracklist/download link after the jump. Shouts to Potholes on the heads up.
This Monday (October 1st) Mayer will drop an EP of remixes from his (2)dope album How Do You Do via his Facebook. His a dope rendition of the album’s latest single.
For this Spring ’12 season, NYC-based FLüD Watches is at it again with it’s most recent collaboration with singer, song writer, and producer Mayer Hawthorne. The two collaborated for a special edition “TABLETURNS” timepiece. Once recognized as “DJ Haircut” and being an avid record collector, it’s easy to figure out the design inspiration behind the timepiece.
The FLuD x Mayer Hawthorne “TABLETURNS” timepiece features a heart shape on the dial of the watch, which is a symbol that he has often utilized from the beginning of his career. Mayer Hawthorne’s debut single from his first album was a limited edition red heart-shaped vinyl and made perfect sense alongside the already existing “TABLETURNS” watch. The special edition FLuD x Mayer Hawthorne timepiece will be available this spring in limited number at select retailers globally.
You can cop a watch for yourself over at the FLüD e-store.
