Check out the latest Stones Throw podcast with a spotlight on the sorely underrated Karriem Riggins:
Karriem Riggins, jazz drummer. He’s backed Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter. He tours with Diana Krall, and recently collaborated with The Beatles’ Paul McCartney on his first studio release in five years. But Karriem does something Ringo never dreamed of – he also drums with an MPC. And that brings us to the subject of Stones Throw Podcast 74…
Karriem Riggins, hip-hop producer. The list of artists he’s produced for and collaborated with read like a who’s who of our favorite hip-hop artists over the last decade. We’re releasing a hip-hop album of Karriem’s this fall called Alone Together, but before we get to that we’re looking back at some of his best productions and collaborations with others. “Karriem Riggins Produced That” mixed by Karriem Riggins.
Live and direct from the Detroit Jazz Festival this past September, Common and Karriem Riggins rocked a huge crowd with their performance. I’m interested in seeing the final result.
After a brief hiatus, Madlib is back with the 11th installment of his Medicine Show series. Low Budget Hi Fi Music is a 28-track hip hop album with features from AG, Guilty Simpson, Strong Arm Steady, MED and more. The album will also feature an unreleased Jaylib (J Dilla x Madlib) track from their never-realized Sophomore album; which is briefly explained below (the full detailed story will be included in the 12-page booklet).
The unofficial title of this album is Dirty Demos Selected by the Loop Digga, a reference to a fire which destroyed some of this album’s master tapes.
Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz is an all-new Madlib jazz production. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft.
It was show day at the Luckman Theatre and February 22nd, 2009 marked our second concert of the Timeless series, Suite for Ma Dukes. As the Orchestra assembled, Karriem Riggins and Steve “Thundercat” Bruner sat in the back chatting and sharing jazz stories. Karriem and Thundercat, both jazz veterans despite their youthfulness, were having a good time. Then in a flash Thundercat broke out his iPhone and asked Karriem about Tony Williams. Tony Williams had been a jazz prodigy who at 17 had played drums with the famous Miles Davis Quartet with Ron Carter, and Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock in the mid-sixties. In the seventies his band Lifetime were an amazing fusion combo making some just incredible records.
Thundercat played Williams’, “Proto-Cosmos,” and Karriem knew the song straight away. Immediately they began to play. B+ happened to be standing there with camera in hand, and was fortunate enough to capture this joyful moment. Here it is, free, happy, improvised and spectacular. Just what music is about.
The 3 DVD Limited Edition Timeless Box Set drops March 30th.
Karriem Riggins recently came off of his “Virtuoso Experience” Tour featuring the help of Pete Rock and DJ Dummy as guest DJs. Below is a clip of Karriem Riggins and band in their version of the song “Tergiversation.”
“Tergiversation” is a song by Gene Perla. Perla was a bass player who performed with legendary drummer Elvin Jones for many years. “Tergiversation” is a term that describes an evasion of straightforward action of clear-cut statement. Perla dedicated the song to jazz legend Miles Davis, a tergiversationist if there ever was one, who often turned his back towards the audience as he played.
