Earlier this week I announced the winners of the (2)Dope Illa J/J Dilla Contest. Big ups to Grynch & Illecism for beating out the competition. I was told to hold off on posting the actual tracks until later in the week. The time has come folks. Both definitely did their thing. If you feel you (or someone you know) did better, feel free to drop a link in the c-section.
Ladies & Gentlemen, the winners have been decided! The contest ran began two weeks and 50+ dopeboyz/girlz submitted entries. Of those contestants, two we’re chosen. Who was better than the rest? Hit the jump and find out…
To celebrate the recent release of the instrumental version of Illa J’s Yancey Boys, the good folks at Audible Treats have teamed up with your favorite rapper’s favorite website to bring you the “Illa J Remix Contest.” After downloading the hook-included instrumental versions of “R U Listening” and “Showtime,” you will have two weeks to rap your best verses based around the concept of Illa J’s hooks. Then submit your versions of the songs to be judged by Illa J and his label, Delicious Vinyl. Rappers are allowed only one submission per song, which means at most two entries per person. Check out the full details under the cut.
Keelay (of Keelay & Zaire) hits the streets of Oakland to ask random people for ideas on what to get Keyshia Cole for Valentine’s Day. Uh oh, does he know eskay doesn’t play like that when it comes to his woman? And while we’re in the V-Day spirit, hit the jump and check Illa J hitting the keyboard in his studio to belt a ditty just for you (ladies)…
In the first installment of Focus’ Pay Homage series, he had Royce, Phonte & Stat Quo rep for the almighty DJ Premier. Now on the third Anniversary of his passing, SV, Frank Nitti & his little brother pay respect to Dilla Dawg!
Illa J releases videos for two singles off the Yancey Boys LP. Unlike this week so far, I dig it. Car trouble, eviction notices, etc. Thanksgiving week is not starting off how I would like. Above is R U Listenin, after the jump is We Here.
Some behind the scenes action of J Dilla’s little brother’s new video, R U Listenin, off his upcoming Yancey Boys LP which features Illa J over unreleased beats from Dilla’s sessions when working on the Pharcyde’s Labcabincalifornia. And what’s a post w/o a Shake bonus? Here goes another joint off said album, dropping November 4th.
Nothing like some unreleased Dilla beats to keep the day on the up and up. The first joint off the upcoming Yancey Boys LP. Illa J gets down over his older brother’s instrumental (Rest in Peace Dilla Dog!).
We Here is a celebration of waking up every day. Why not live out your dreams, why not try? Of the lyric ‘Let’s go crazy/ You saw Purple Rain’ Illa J explains: “It’s like Prince asking ‘Are we gonna let the elevator break us down?’ Naw, let’s go all out! One of the things I learned from my brother is that you don’t get that much time, so make the most of it. That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate my life to doing what I love: music. - Illa J
