After speaking on his contribution to a track set to appear on Nicki Minaj’s upcoming LP, Nas breaks down his latest single “The Don” and speaks on the late Heavy D co-producing the gritty street banger.
Nas: “When Salaam played me the beat for it, I said, ‘That’s the single — do this and do that and we’re golden.’ So he started flipping it around. When we heard that Heavy D died, of course we were messed up, and Salaam called me and told me, ‘You know your record “The Don”? You know who gave me that, right?’ He’s like, ‘Heavy D gave me that. He liked what we did with the other single, “Nasty,” and he sent me this record.’ And the rest is history. So rest in peace, Heavy D.”

The Hip Hop community paid tribute to the life of the late great, Heavy D in a private memorial service at the Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon New York. Heavy D was a much needed positive soul in the Hip Hop community who will be missed dearly. President Obama’s words were read by Heavy D’s daughter, Xea Myers at the funeral.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time,” the note from Obama read. “He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.”

Heavy D, the former leader of the hip-hop group Heavy D and the Boyz, has died at the age of 44. The rapper was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles earlier this afternoon and was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. PT. Police are investigating his death but there are no signs of foul play.
