Stik Figa and D/Will created an auditory roller coaster with last year’s hellogoodbye. The album, a bittersweet concept of suicide notes to Stik Figa’s son, ended with a single gunshot.
Now the duo is back to deliver Alive & Well. While it picks off where the last album left off, it also takes a new, more vibrant and engaging approach. Stik Figa is a rappers-rapper, no singing, no gimmicks. And D/Will has pushed himself even further on the MPC, bringing in live guitars, keys and more. Enjoy.
After the dark intensity of last year’s banger Hello, Goodbye, Stik Figa and D/Will are gearing up to return with Alive and Well. D/Will is producing a series of projects this year and Whatupwidit is just a sneak peak at what Stik Figa’s Alive and Well (release date tba) will hold.
If D is reading this right now (and I know you are), I’d like to request that you flip “Doug” for your next Beat Emporium. The original “Doug” intro > rap.
I don’t know if you’ve seen this kid’s videos, but what usually happens is that he goes into some random Apple store and literally sings karaoke-style a random-ass song. This time around he performs OU an D/WILL’s cut, which is by far one of the most randomnest things I’ve ever seen in my life. Like, who knew?
As a self-admitted cartoon crackhead I find this track to be a wholly entertaining experience. D/Will’s Cartoon Beat Emporium will be released as an instrumental album soon.
The first time D/Will did this, it was for Dexter’s Laboratory. This time he flips a sample of that weird MTV show. I never understood why she kept dying at the end of each short to this day.
D is releasing the first in a series of instrumental videos “D/Will’s Cartoon Beat Emporium,” a mash-up of his favorite cartoons and the animated sounds he makes on the MPC. When all of the videos have been released, he will compile them into an instrumental disc.
Mos Def hit the UK recently, and he passed through my 1xtra radio show on the eve of copping his Grammy Nominations.
Mos talks on:
*His approach to making albums.
*That Mos/J Cole/Jay Electronica/Talib Kweli collabo.
*The genius of Slick Rick.
*Mos Def vs. Hollywood
*Turning down a role in Tropic Thunder.
