The homie Nefarious & The Soul Dojo created a tribute mix to the late, great James Yancey. We know what you’re thinking, “oh, another Dilla tribute mix.” Deal with it, there’s no such thing as too much Dilla, unless the shit is utter basura. Oh hey, by the way… this, yes. Tracklist, stream and download below.
Finale recently hit LA and stopped by Fat Beats to discuss with the folks at Our Kitchen Sink about his J Dilla tribute song “Paid Homage” produced by Flying Lotus, from his album A Pipe Dream and A Promise (in stores now).
I know the 10th has come and gone for you East Coast folk, but out here on the West? I’m still rocking it for 2 more hours. So before the day ends I wanted to get a few more Dilla related things up. Not that I’m only allowed to post Dilla shit today alone, but it makes sense (right?). Here’s some vintage audio that was recorded at the Henry Fonda Theater on April 4, 2004; the first night of the Madvillain/Jaylib tour for Madvillainy. Madlib & J. Rocc had already performed Jaylib songs together at this point, but it was the first time Dilla would join them on stage as he recently moved to Los Angeles and joined the tour (w/o being announced on the flyers). As you can hear, it was quite the surprise. Same goes for another unannounced guest… Common. Shouts to B+ & Melo D for recording this set and shouts to Stones Throw for liberating it on this special day. ST also has some pictures from the show, so head over there to check them out.

It’s here folks! Shout out to Mick Boogie for putting together this incredible mixtape (for free). You can should also purchase a special edition where all proceeds will be donated to the J. Dilla Foundation. Also be sure to check out the exclusive interview with Busta Rhymes & Mick Boogie by my man Jake Paine over at HipHopDX. Interesting read for sure. UPDATE: I figured today would be as good a day as any to re-up and bring this dope mixtape back to the top.
The homie JKim is working with Mochilla to spread the news about this Suite for Ma Dukes EP that was put together by Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood Ferguson. A four song orchestral EP of music originally produced by the late great James Yancey. This post comes in a different fashion as what you are normally used to though. There is no download link! Life isn’t over though… you can stream a song over at the plantation and you can support Ma Dukes and purchase the EP on iTunes now. One the 22nd, Nino & Ferguson will perform to music alongside a 36-piece Orchestra as part of Timeless: The Composer Arranger Series at the Luckman FineArts Complex. Hit the jump for the flyer (and full artwork)…
Back in 2008, Convinced sifted through the archives for most of his 2 for 1 series. 2009 will be all new material and here’s the first installment of the new year. FCC!
The title of this mixtape says it all. DJ Eves puts together a great mix chalk full of dope dope hip hop. Be sure to click the image above to download the tape. Featuring music from Black Milk, Buff1, Large Pro, Reks, Fashawn, Oddisee (who hosts the project), Raekwon, GZA and more. You also get Dilla produced Common joints.
I’ve been meaning to post this ever since it appeared on Fresh Selects this weekend. A dope remix to PPP & Dilla’s already classic cut, Shotgun. Now featuring a new beat from Waajeed and a previously unreleased verse from Jay Dee! Straight off Triple P’s upcoming Abundance Mixtape, which will feature ‘jeed remixing a bunch of PPP material as well as some brand new cuts from the new members. Look out for the Abundance album hitting shelves in January!
Another reason I wanted to post this was to give awareness to Ma Dukes’ (Dilla’s mother) troubles. In light of her illness (Lupus, the same disease that took her son), growing financial troubles and recent estrangement with the executors of her son’s estate; The Giant Peach has set up a way to donate. Hit up their MySpace and get to it. And for those that expect something in return of a donation, you can purchase the new Solillaquists of Sound single with all proceeds heading to Ms. Yancey!
Madlib’s crazy anticipated addition to BBE’s Beat Generation series (WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip) is hitting the internets on September 30th! With that said here goes a joint off the project featuring MED & Poke, that I swooped on from eskay. Also, Lib released Volume 5 of his Beat Konducta series (Dil Cosby Suite) over at StonesThrow. Check the link to preview the entire thing and be sure to grab the bonus I threw up.
