David Banner Speaks On Tha Carter IV, Busta Rhymes & More

Sitting down with Complex, David revealed that he has also worked on Lil Wayne’s upcoming album (though he’s not sure if he’ll land on the final version) and their relationship, and how Bone Crusher (yeah, that same guy) helped him with concepts.

“I did about 12 [songs for Wayne]. One thing I respected about Wayne this time, Wayne didn’t allow me to go all over the place. Wayne told me, ‘Banner, this is exactly what I’m looking for. I know you want to be creative, I know you want to do this, but right now, for the stuff that I have already done on the album, this is the lane that I need.’ And I super-served that. [The lane was] just bangers. Nothing that you really have to think about. I’m talking straight, in your face bangers.”

…”I’ve been been working with Busta. The song I’ve got for Busta is—if we can get the sample cleared—going to be one of the dopest hip-hop songs in a very long time. I don’t want to say what the sample is because I don’t even want nobody to go in that direction. Nobody in hip-hop is doing this. [The sample is] somebody that’s dead, but they’re still famous and popping in young culture. The way that I did it though, I didn’t put it in the genre of music that they’re from. It’s on a hood beat and Wayne is on it.”

(2)Deep: Crooked Lettaz – Firewater f. Noreaga x Daydreamin’

Grey Skies was an album put out by Crooked Lettaz in ’99 that featured David Banner and fellow Mississippi rhyme partner Kamikaze. The majority of the production was handled by Banner as well as a few cuts by Gensu Dean (who recently lent his production skills to Large Pro) and had a heavy, southern-funk sound reminiscent of some early Dungeon Family production. Definitely not your typical southern album, the lyrics were heavy on positivity and community / culture upliftment, and although considered “southern,” is influenced by all coasts. Being that this album was released at a time when Hip-Hop really started to blow like Osama’s dome, this LP got shuffled into obscurity (ie. the underground). One of a few southern albums that still gets heavy burn til this day.
