The store ended up not even opening because thousands of sneaker heads had massed around the store. – Dallas

If you don’t live in New York (and , sometimes, even if you do), the seemingly weird trend of mangy house cats solemnly patrolling your local corner store won’t make any sense. But if you let Dallas Penn and Rafi Kam tell it…

I.C. NYC Episode 5 is our homage to all the nature shows I’ve watched on PBS. I knew I wanted to hear a British voice as the narrator. A Richard Attenborough type. This is where my buddy Ash stepped in. He even read the script without seeing any of the images beforehand.

Big shouts to Robbie from UnKut who I asked to read the script prior to Ash. Robbie’s Aussie British accent and incredible speed at speaking (easily 100 words per minute) means we’ll need to use him for a different I.C. nature doc. Maybe the ghetto hummingbird?

‘Bodega Cats’ was inspired by a Flickr group of the same name which posts pictures of bodega cats throughout NYC. Our intrepid intern Donna Ostrowsky did most of the shooting and sundry legwork to capture these images. The film is a slight departure from typical I.C.s movies but I still think you will enjoy it.

They still bug me out when you try to reach for a bag of chips and one is chilling in the rack, though.

I’ll be honest; in my two years of residing in New York I don’t think I’ve ever traveled to Queens (unless passing through to the airport) or knew what exactly was mofongo. So leave it to Dallas and Rafi to head to Corona – also known as “ground zero for the Latin America diaspora” (*cries*) – for an investigative report on the meal, which in turn will now likely make me take a trip to the borough before the summer is out.

In 1980, New Yorker Eric Bram noticed that for twenty years the price of a subway token had tended to match the price of a slice of pizza. Thirty years later, his hypothesis still holds true. The question we wanted answered is WHY. Are the MTA and the various supposedly independent pizza shops involved in collusion – or who’s taking their pricing cues from who? And what about the dollar pizza spots that have been popping up all over Manhattan recently — could these be predicting a lower cost transit authority appearing in our future?

The Polar Bear Swim is a Coney Island tradition. On New Year’s Day, the Polar Bear Club who swim off this beach all winter long invite the world to join them for a plunge in the near freezing Atlantic Ocean. What better way to start I.C.
