Iceberg Slim. You’ve heard the name referenced countless times by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Too $hort and Jay-Z. Or maybe you’re one of the millions of readers who checked out his best-selling books. Whatever side of the spectrum you reside on, director Jorge Hinojosa and producer Ice-T are giving us a visual look at the life and legacy of the legendary Chicago pimp with their new documentary, Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp, impacting theaters (and iTunes) on July 19th. Take a look at the official trailer above and pick up Pimp: The Story of My Life while you wait.
Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp, examines the tumultuous life of legendary Chicago pimp Iceberg Slim (1918-1992) and how he reinvented himself from pimp to author of 7 groundbreaking books. These books were the birth of Street Lit and explored the world of the ghetto in gritty and poetic detail and have made him a cultural icon.
Oh, and huge shouts to DJ Shadow and CunninLynguists for providing the films music!
Sadistik links with some of Shake’s drinking/touring buddies from the CunninLynguists team for this track off of his upcoming Flowers For My Father LP, dropping February 19th.
Now that the Canada tour is over and the holidays have passed, Kno and Deacon give an update on the creation of Strange Journey Vol. 3. If you remember from the first meeting, Kno asked the fans to head to their Facebook page and vote on who they’d like to see on the project. Now with the second meeting, he and Deacon announce the closing of the polls and speak on some of the artists that were chosen to be apart of SJV3. Stay tuned as the updates will start to come more frequently as the trio continues to work..
Picking up where we left on in Part One, CunninLynguists, Tonedeff, DJ FlipFlop and yours truly ventured to Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; and Arhus, Denmark to finish up the Oneirology Euro Tour II with a bang. Highlight of the last three shows? The insanity that went down once “Lynguistics” dropped in Stockholm. The crowd went apeshit to say the least. Great times.
Last year, I had the pleasure of joining CunninLynguists, Tonedeff and DJ FlipFlop across seas as part of the Oneirology Euro Tour II. This was the third of four tours I’ve went on with these guys and probably one of my most memorable. To this day, I’ll forever be in debt to them as they gave me a chance to see the world. I mean hell, before the first tour I had only been as far as Toronto. Now, I’ve got stamps in my passport that will forever bring back memories of great times. All sensitive shit aside, we finally put together the footage that I shot during the trip (shouts to Deacon on the editing). Part one features shows in Copenhagen, Denmark; Lund, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; Bergen, Norway, my troubles at the airport and other such antics. Part two will complete the tour, and it will be posted sometime next week. Enjoy.
While down in Atlanta for the A3C Festival, Akomplice Clothing enlisted Chicago photographer trashhand to capture their 2012 Holiday collection in action. Read the break down below and hit the jump for the shots.
The story of the lookbook is told through the lens of every attendee, from the food vendors to the headlining performers, which include the likes of Slum Village, Devin The Dude, CunninLynguists, Rich The Kid, Mr. Invisible, Gerald Walker, Ducko Mcfli, K. Camp, and Dungeon Family member Slimm Calhoun, all shot and presented in this Winter ’12 lookbook. Branded staples such as 5-panels snap-backs, knits, jackets, varsitys, backpacks, tees, snap-backs, and bucket hats were supplied, worn and photographed in their natural element. Peruse the pics and see the collection personified on the backs, arms, and wrists of the musicians and crowd. The Akomplice holiday collection will release on their webstore. Take a listen to the song below, check the behind-the-scenes footage of the creation up top and hit the jump for the full project. Other features include Jarren Benton, Slum Village, Los, Emilio Rojas, THURZ, Dee Goodz, Shawn Chrystopher, Toki Wright, Skyzoo and many more.
On the 21st episode of Tonedeff and PackFM’s Tacos & Chocolate Milk podcast (which was originally intended to be recorded during our stop in Toronto) features CunninLynguists’ Kno. As always, hilarity ensues with talks of how they would destroy the world, reciting Marky Mark word for word (no… seriously), how “Never Come Down” came about (and much it bangs live), upcoming projects and much more.
