The Weathermen – The Only Weathermen Song

Copywrite, El-P, Camu Tao, Tage Future, Cannibal Ox, Jakki Da Motamouth and Yak Ballz. Remember that line-up? Well, to celebrate the release of MHz Legacy’s self-titled debut album, they’ve let loose this vaulted track for the masses. Says Copywrite…

“Back in 2001, 2002, Camu and I where living in Middletown, New York. Cage lived there too, which is why I moved out there. We where supposed to go on a tour with all of the Eastern Conference Records artists, but Mad Skillz pulled out to vacation, so the tour fell through. Cage wasn’t too fond of Camu back then but ‘Mu expressed to me how bad he wanted to go to pursue music with me and I told him to come along. In those days, we would always drive my Ford Explorer from Middletown to Manhattan to record at DJ Mighty Mi’s spot on Lexington, and then we’d go visit El-P in Brooklyn and crash for several nights at a time. Vast Aire and Vordul Mega, of Cannibal Ox, had their own room downstairs and El’s studio was right next door, so there was always music going on.”

“This song was recorded around the time I was working on my debut album, The High Exhaulted, and Cannibal Ox was working on their album, The Cold Vein. It was a rare occasion to have Tage Future, Camu Tao, Jakki Da Motamouth, Cage, Cannibal Ox, El-P, and myself all in the same room at once, so I told them we needed to seize the moment and record something. El started pulling up beats and we all instantly agreed on this one. The beat played and we wrote – whoever had their verse first hit the mic booth, which, at that time, was El-P’s closet, and the rest is history. Camu was probably smokin’ a blunt with Vordul, so neither of them is on the song; I don’t know why El didn’t drop a verse. Back then we titled it “The Only Weathermen Song,” since it was so tough to get all of us together at the same time.”

Enjoy.

Farewell Def Jux: 1999-2010 (Mixtape)

With El-P announcing that indie label Definitive Jux was going on hiatus, the homie Vega went ahead and put together a massive compilation of some of his personal favorite Def Jux tracks. Featuring the likes of Cage, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, El-P, Camu Tao, RJD2, Mr. Lif, Murs & 9th Wonder, C-Rayz Walz and many more. Damn, looking at the tracklist I’m reminded of how many classic records this crew has put out there. UPDATE: Brought this back to the top as I took the time out to tag the files properly. Now it should show up all nice on your iPod/Zune.

Vast Aire – Battle of the Planets (Def Jux x Cage Diss)

In response to Cage’s comments (shown in the block quote below) about Vast’s relationship with Camu Tao (Rest in Peace).

It bothered me very much to see a lot of his enemies claiming this Love they had for him the day after he passed but none when he was dying for a year and a half. Some of you made it right with him before he died. I can understand except one person and in honor of Tero a true shit starter and fire ignitor I would like to out VAST AIRE you are a LIAR and Camu hated you and you know it. You shit on him when you knew he was dying. You disrespected his fiancee weeks after his passing with disrespectful emails.

Whatever the case may be… this shit is depressing. If both of ya’ll were close to Camu why disrespect him by using his name and life as a reason to beef? And even if this wasn’t about Camu… the track was still underwhelming. Anyone remember the Esoteric, Cage, Copywrite, El-P diss tracks? 7700 Years to Date, 9 Lashes, Mercy Killing, Haterama, Do It, etc. There was so much heat from every person involved with that beef. I might have to make a post about that shit. Shouts to Vega.

Aesop Rock Talks Weathermen Album x Tour (Video)

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.714055&w=425&h=325&fv=]

Aesop Rock discusses being on tour and the upcoming Weathernman album. Aesop Rock, Cage, El-P, Breezly Brewin, Tame One, Yak Ballz, Camu Tao (R.I.P.) on one LP? Hell yes! I remember bumping the shit out any and everything Def Jux, Weatherman circa 2001(ish). I still wish Copywrite didn’t have a fall out with them though, he used to slay his verses. Still does, just not with the crew I remember him with. Dah well, thanks for this Linda. Speaking of Ace Rizzle, hit the jump for a dope little project put together by The Hood Internet.

R.I.P. Tero “Camu Tao” Smith (1977-2008)

While packing up our booth after the mini-tornado hit SounSet ’08 I heard some disheartening news. Aesop Rock announced that his friend and fellow Weathermen emcee Camu Tao had passed after a nearly a two year battle with lung cancer. I’ve been a up on dude’s music for quite sometime as I was huge MHz/Weathermen fan back in the day. So on behalf of 2DB, I’d like to send my condolences to his friends and family. Rest In Peace Mr. Smith.
