Weathermen – Possible Kidnapping f. Aesop Rock, Cage & El-P [Tags]

On September 1st, Def Jux will be releasing the latest installment of their Definitive Jux Presents compilation series. If you haven’t been paying attention over the years, we’re on volume 4. With that said, here’s the 1st and 2nd leaks. One being a Weathermen track featuring Aesop Rock, Cage & El-P (apologies for the promo tags, I’m working on getting it without); the other being a solo effort from Yak Ballz. The latter also serving as the title track from Yak’s upcoming album, dropping later this year. Hit the jump for full artwork on both…

Cage – I Never Knew You (Free EP)

I posted up the Shia LaBeouf directed video for the title track; now here’s the brand new EP from Cage. Free promo building up to the release of his next album, Depart From Me, dropping July 7th on Definitive Jux. Shouts to the SubterraneanBlog, and Aesop for the heads up.

Tracklist + Download link after the jump…

Cage – I Never Knew You (Video)

By the time this post goes up, I should be in an ENT Specialist office trying to figure out what’s causing these bullshit health issues. I’m hoping for the best as I really can’t handle the pain for much longer. Anyways, here’s a brand new video from Cage; directed by Shia LaBeouf. I’m not sure what time it’s being released, but today (Monday) is also when Cage will be dropping off his free I Never Knew You EP. Maybe it’s out by the time this post goes up, maybe not. Either way I’ll get to it when I’m back on the grind.

Cage Talks Depart From Me, New Direction, etc (Video)

New York emcee Cage talks about the new sound and new direction behind his upcoming album Depart From Me, coming on Def Jux Records. Tomorrow we get a double dose of Cage as his Shia Labeouf directed video for I Never Knew You is premiering on MTV2 (as some have seen already but weren’t supposed to; and the dopehouse will be dropping his I Never Knew You EP (for free). Hit the jump for the (2)dope artwork for both the album and EP…

Cage – Dr. Strong

Some of you might appreciate the awesome’ness that it is, to make these last two posts one after the other. Weatherman!
Anyways… onto the post. Some new Cage, presumably off Depart From Me (June 30), for the masses. And from the image above you can see there is a video in the works for Never Knew You (the track that was accidentally uploaded on the Nothing Left to Say post). The interesting thing about it is that Shia LaBeouf  is directing it. Hopefully that means the talks of Cage’s biography being put to film is becoming more of a reality! Shouts to Vega for the track btw.

Cage – Nothing Left to Say (prod. El-P)

Before I head out to grab some lunch I wanted to drop this new Cage record off that Pitchfork premiered earlier today (shouts to P&P for the heads up). He hasn’t dropped an album since 2005′s Hell’s Winter but he hasn’t lost a step in his evolution in my opinion. This record (reportedly a response to a dead friend) is exactly where I hoped he would progress into music wise. Instead of my rants though, here’s what Pitchfork had to say…

Cage isn’t rapping about scalping motherfuckers anymore, and he’s lost a certain devil-may-care shock-rap joyousness in his transition to freaked-out adulthood. But “Nothing Left to Say” still drips with catharsis, partly because of Cage’s own spittle-flecked intensity but mostly because of El-P’s beat, which starts out as an ominous synth-tone wobble and turns into a disorienting industrial clatter. If and when Shia LaBoeuf ever gets around to making that Cage biopic he’s been kicking around for a while, this one might soundtrack some sort of hitting-rock-bottom montage.

Depart From Me is set to drop June 29th on Def Jux and according to Cage’s MySpace we’ll be getting an EP and more soon as well! UPDATE: Apparently Pitchfork messed up and uploaded the wrong record! I’ve uploaded the correct song now! The joint I had up prior is called I Never Knew You. So if you grabbed that, consider yourself lucky. You now have two new Cage joints haha.

Cage – My Mind is Kind of Morbid (Demo)

Looking through the archives of 2DBz I’m sad to admit I’ve only mentioned Cage in a handful of posts. Hopefully that will change with the release of his upcoming album on it’s way (according to El-P). Anyways… I noticed Grand Good put up a demo track, that was recorded over a decade ago, that I don’t remember hearing at all! And since I’m sure a good selection of you haven’t even heard of Cage outside the lines Eminem has thrown in the past*, and this demo isn’t exactly a “become a fan” record; I’ve included some of my favorite tracks off each of his albums, and an Eastern Conference All Stars compilation…

BONUS: Cage – Stripes [off Hell's Winter]
BONUS: Cage – Ballad of Worms [off EC All Stars III]
BONUS: Cage – Down the Left Hand Path [off Movies for the Blind]

*Remember the line in Role Model

  • “Bought Cage’s tape, opened it and dubbed over it.”

Or the shots fired in Get You Mad

  • “Went on stage and sprayed Cage wit Agent Orange and wiped my ass wit his page in the Source.”

El-P’s First Time… (Video)

The former Company Flow HYTIC turned Def Jux CEO talks to URB Magazine about the first time he didn’t get booed off stage. Then the thing gets a little NSFW-ish around the 1:45 mark. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. SHAKE UPDATE: Since Meka isn’t as inclined to the underground hip hop scene he forgot to mention the best part of this video… the new Cage LP is coming!

Aesop Rock Talks Weathermen Album x Tour (Video)

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.714055&w=425&h=325&fv=]

Aesop Rock discusses being on tour and the upcoming Weathernman album. Aesop Rock, Cage, El-P, Breezly Brewin, Tame One, Yak Ballz, Camu Tao (R.I.P.) on one LP? Hell yes! I remember bumping the shit out any and everything Def Jux, Weatherman circa 2001(ish). I still wish Copywrite didn’t have a fall out with them though, he used to slay his verses. Still does, just not with the crew I remember him with. Dah well, thanks for this Linda. Speaking of Ace Rizzle, hit the jump for a dope little project put together by The Hood Internet.
