A (2)Dope Rappity Rap-Rap Week

Cookin Soul x Big Pun x J Dilla = Big Dilla (Mixtape)

As many of you know, February 7th was both J DIlla’s birthday and ten years to the day of Big Pun’s passing (and February 6th being Bob Marley’s birthday). With that said, Cookin’ Soul and the dopehouse pay homage to the work of the two legends on this project featuring Big Pun raps over J Dilla instrumentals. Tracklist and link down bottom.

Freddie Gibbs: A (2)Dope FreEP

I’ll admit, I was sleeping a little bit on Freddie Gibbs, and was somewhat surprised at how quickly his name has garnered buzz around these here parts. But it was the cut he did with Pill, “Run Up To Me,” which finally caught my attention. After his guest appearance on (2)Dope Radio this past weekend, Freddie and Co. was gracious to let me see and listen to a few things he has coming up (including a track with Phonte), and also threw me a few DJ-free tracks, as well as a previously unreleased track Freddie had forgotten he’d even done. I’ve compiled these tracks into an EP for the masses. This way I’m hoping nobody else is caught sleeping the way I was. Tracklist and link down bottom. SHAKE UPDATE: I wasn’t around when this went up or I would have put together this cover earlier. I saw a few folks asking for some artwork, so here’s a little something for y’all iPod/Zune. I also added a bonus freestyle from Gangsta Gibbs that went down on Toca Tuesdays w/ DJ Tony Touch. And be sure to check out part 2 of his interview with Baller’s Eve Radio.

Outasight & D/Will – From Here To There: The OutaWill Sessions (FreEP)

ArtByShake. Click to enlarge.

If you’ve followed the site for the past year or so, you’d know that I’ve been a fan of Kansas Cit’s D/Will ever since I was put on to him and made him a (2)Dope To Sleep On… entrant. With a sound that’s more Motown than City Of Fountains, I would always mention how ol’ boy would remind of J Dilla at times when his beats were matched with the right person.

Outasight, on the other hand, is an artist that came seemingly out of nowhere a year ago, when the homegirl Starr put me on to his music almost a year ago. Equal parts soulful crooner and heavy spitter, I can say that it took a little while to get used to that, but when he dropped From There to Here: An Album Prequel in March, it changed my perceptions of him and I became a full-fledged fan.

Downtown In My Mind” dropped with D/Will on the boards back up OU, and it instantly became one of my favorite songs of the year (the many plays it gets on (2)Dope Radio and the fact that the instrumental is my ringtone can attest to that). What I didn’t know, though, was that the two of them had worked together on various songs for years. Which brings us to this point.

As a form of a “one man, one producer” type series I’m kicking off, I gathered this collection of D/Will-produced Outasight tracks the two have done over the past few years for everyone to enjoy (and perhaps get D and OU to work together/make an entire project together one day?). With some of these tracks from past projects, or on a mixtape or hard to find thanks to dead links, these NoDJ, CDQ tracks are indicative of the perfect synergy the two of them have when working together. I hope that everyone who downloads this as well enjoys their music and encourages them to work together again.

Make sure you cop D/Will & Stik Figa’s hellogoodbye, and be sure to cop Outasight’s Further project, presented by LRG, when it drops next Tuesday, December 15th.

Tracklist and link under the cut.

Who Wants A DJ Hero Pack?

So aside from giving away Zunes and whatnot, we’ve also been hit up to give away a DJ Hero prize pack today, featuring the DJ Hero game and turntable controllers for the Playstation 2 (don’t ask), for one lucky winner. How to enter? Simple. Answer the following question in the c-section:

Eminem and Jay-Z sampled Labi Siffre’s “I Got The…” in a song. Name me the songs that used the sample.

Don’t forget to leave your full name and actual email address in the required spots (not as a comment itself) in the section. I’ll randomly choose one person from those entries as the winner. Good luck. UPDATE: Contest closed.

2DB x CMJ Day 3 x Duck Down (Video)

Saturday was the final night of CMJ Week, and last night at the Blender Theatre the entire Duck Down roster closed the curtain in what was easily my favorite show of the week. Here are the highlights of the show, and once again props to Audible Treats, Duck Down and Coal Mine for allowing us to be a part of their respective shows. 2DB x SWSW? Let’s hope so…
