The 56th annual GRAMMY Awards went down tonight in Los Angeles. One of the most talked about categories is the Best Rap Album which featured a battle royale between Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (The Heist), Kendrick lamar (good kid, m.A.A.d city), Drake (Nothing Was the Same), JAY Z (MCHG) and Kanye West (YEEZUS).

Since the nominations were released weeks back, the hip hop worlds been debating Macklemore’s position in the category. The committee even almost left them off the ballot entirely. But that didn’t stop the Seattle duo from striking gold.

Nominated for seven awards, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four, including Best New ArtistBest Rap Performance (“Thrift Shop”), Best Rap Song (“Thrift Shop”) and the aforementioned Best Rap Album (The Heist).

I can only imagine how on fire social media will be tonight. Even with Macklemore and Kendrick congratulating each other, rap fans are gonna throw a fit (and Mack already knows it).

UPDATE: Macklemore took to Instagram to share that even he thought Kendrick should have won “Best Rap Album” for gkmc.

My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys
