We've already gotten Big Sean's thoughts, now Jay Elect speaks with RevoltTV about his contribution to the most talked about song of the year so far, "Control." Revealing that Kendrick's verse was added after he laid his vocals down.

I like the song and the stir it’s causing. It’s good for rap music.I like the song and the stir it’s causing. It’s good for rap music. A month or two ago, Big Sean asked me to be on this record with him for his album. He had a demo hook on it at the time. I did my verse and sent it back. I found out a couple days before it was released that Kendrick had put a verse on it.

You think if Jay heard what K. Dot said first, he'd have a different verse?

I think Jay Elctron wouldn't have even been mentioned on Kendricks verse if he wasn't on the song when k. dot was laying his verse. not saying he is not a dope lyricist, but there is no way Kendrick would have thought of mentioning Jay Elctron if elctron wasn't already on the song.

I definitely think Jay would have took a different approach knowing what Kendrick did. He probably thought it was going to end in the same fashion as the Mac Miller track.. But I always hear stories of Kendrick rewriting or making it so that he's the last to record a verse for a song. Either way, it was good for the culture.

Why does it take someone to hear what somebody else did to step their game up? That makes me believe I'm hearing half-assed verses otherwise.

@ualreadyno That's exactly why this whole shic is kinda pathetic, it took some other nigga putting them on blast to get people to actually rap. Unless you got your name mentioned (Wale, Cole, Drizzy, etc.), you don't need to bother with acting like Dot was talking to you or else it looks weak! Like you're affirming that he has say so over you/your spot in hip hop when only the artists themselves can dictate that, don't go harder JUST cause some other nigga made you catch feelings, go harder because as an emcee you want to, the fact that the new niggas are answering back to him is bittersweet

I'm waiting for some of the dudes he mentioned to respond

Except there's nothing wrong with Jay Electronica's verse and Jay doesn't imply there is. It's elegant and manages to communicate a whole lot more about his life (actual substance pertaining to the individual) than about the rap game (per Kendrick Lamar). One is talking shit (Lamar) while the other gives you The Word.

Y'all faggots criticize 50 when he disses but praise Lamar. Hypocrites.

Finally, if Kendrick got to hear everyone else spit and consistently waits to hear everyone else before he throws a verse on it, this just means he's criticizing is false. He gets to prep his verse while others have to establish the standard.

Jay is taking the high road on this and while I commend him he should have just spoken the truth. It's not my place to explain this timeline.

it really doesn't matter if you think about it....honestly, i'm suprised that none of you "hip hop" heads have mentioned the fact that J. Elecs verse was hella tight already. I luv kendrick lamars verse and Big Seans, but honestly beside the controversy it stirred, Lamars verse wasn't anything super lyrical or special. Elecs verse was wizardry as usual...

  • nuff

Jay wouldn't. Jay always spits the same legendary type shit. great lyricism

  • Gabe

I honestly think if Jay heard Kendrick's verse before the song was pieced together, Jay Electronica would have either concocted a better feature verse or if he was in his feelings...dropped the album.

  • hejsa

He might have written a longer verse, like the other two rappers did.
