There’s a new phenomenon down South I’ve kinda-sorta kept an eye on (I deejay on the side; you’d be amazed at what kinda stuff I read up on), something I lovingly refer to as “Troll Rap,” where simple, crude hooks are drilled into your head earworm-style, seemingly taking Lil B’s musical format and applying it to their own sound. Over the past few months I’ve seen this type of stuff from artists such as Migos (who officially broke through the Southern glass ceiling once they dropped their YRN mixtape and Drake remixed their “Versace” track this past weekend), Rich Homie Quan (if you haven’t heard “Some Type Of Way” by now, you will before this summer is out) and Que, whose own “Young Paula Deen Soundtrack Music” track gets an all-star remix of its own. Thanks, I think, to X.
