Fjer – Long Nights (Video)

blame it on Shake April 2, 2013

I first caught wind of Fjer (pronounced “Fee-YAIR”) after she performed a haunting cover of James Blake’s “Retrograde” (click here to watch/download). Taking note of the latent, I wanted to wait until the 21-year-old Danish singer/songwriter/producer released her debut EP, A New Start (available here), before I made a final decision on my personal thoughts. Now — after streaming the project (which you can do yourself below) and watching the above video for the lead single — I’m convinced. Fjer is dope!

Executive Produced by Peter Anthony Red for his Quintic label, A New Start exploring themes of emotional freedom. The lead single “Long Nights”’ details a claustrophobic relationship that has grown too tight, with “Box” chronicling Pandora’s unleashing of infidelity, while the aptly titled “Explode” finally wipes the slate clean for the climactic finale of “A New Start” (featuring modulated guest vocals by Red himself). This is the sullen Scandinavian sound, filtered through big city lights – complete with stunning self-produced electro-soul backdrops, drum & bass-tinted anthemic choruses and vocal washes that connect to the lonely soul within the crowd.
