As we close in on the New Year (which will be the DopeHouse’s fifth, crazy), Mek and I have put together a list of our favorite projects from the last 365. And like I’ve said the past couple years, this is OUR favorites list. It’s not a “best of” and it’s not us saying everything that’s not listed is trash. It’s simply a break down of what we enjoyed the most. So without running the risk of talking too much, hit the jump to see what your favorite (or least favorite) dopeboyz were banging in 2012.

* If I’m missing something, it’s because I never got around listening to it. Not a snub.

TDE must be DEEP in y’all pockets you ride them more than they promote themselves. lol
3 TDE members in the top 10 of the YEAR? lol
I do agree with the other choices for the most part.
^^ i’m a fan of good music, that’s all.
Good picks. My fave albums were GKMC, Brother Ali and Nas.
Can’t argue with these lists, really. It’s all a matter of taste but all of this stuff is quality work in some way….
I love these lists, I’m getting everything I haven’t heard already.
TDE deserves all that praise!
keep an eye on arima…
TDE’s were my top 3 tbh
Baby Face killa my fav mixtape
Where is Blu & Exile???????????????????????????///////
@Leykis101
Blu doesn’t pay them enought to be mention lol
I see none of the Apollo Brown albums made it Smh .
The list looks Lazy….
I don’t know how you couldn’t put the TDE releases in your top ten, they put out straight fire this year. Surprised that Taylor Alderdice wasn’t in top ten mixtapes though
Arima is up next!
dude who really think artists pay for their spots on these lists are mentally retarded. this is just what there favorite tracks were. the shit they bump. not the shit you bump. go make your own list.
Salute to the Yuna nod, album was def legit
Good List. Channel Orange would be in my top 10.
1999 was the #1 project for me. Not only is it good music, but with PRO ERA signifies a very promising future.
Bit of feed back. I liked how you did the list last year as a big picture.
CHoices where also on point.
Love
nice list, much respect. TDE has three albums on the list because they deserve to be on the list.
only ones i can think of that i would add are:
homeboy sandman – first of a living breed
vinny cha$e – golden army
smoke dza – k.o.n.y.
masta ace – son of yvonne
casual – he still think he raw
russ – apollo 13
blu – give me my flowers..
game – jesus piece (if its considered for 2012)
Zero mention of Add-2′s “Save.Our.Souls”???? Blasphemy!!
No Lil B mixtapes. SMH
where is GAME and EL-P tho
Its just and opinion folks so RELAX, if you feel different thats cool and besides I havent even heard every single album to come out this year but these are my favorites in 2012.

could you put these in an infographic, similar to last years list?
Meka is a faggot. lol @ his picks. awful. Shake nailed it tho.
Props on a solid list. I would definitely add in Blu & Exile and Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson’s LP’s and a few others. We all have different tastes, though. Nice lists. I like that you included Swerve’s Barrelhouse LP, Shake. Dopeness.
No E-40 and no Moka Only, two of the hardest working and most consistent muthafuckas in the game. Yall just some trendy ass cats nowadays lol
@james trendy? if by sharing my opinion is trendy then so be it. I appreciate E40′s work ethic but I wasn’t a fan of the whole album. Three discs is too much for me.
@notyou when compiling a list of the last year stuff is bound to be lost. I really enjoyed that project and am adding it now. Thanks.
Honestly, compared to last year, this was a weak ass year for Hip Hop. Too many lackluster/disappointing/underwhelming albums. Out of all the albums I reviewed I only gave out two 9/10′s. Aesop Rock’s “Skelethon” and Blu & Exile’s “Give My My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them”. The rest were all 6/10′s and 8/10′s mostly. Don’t even know how Shake was able to say Brother Ali’s album was in the top 10. That was weak as fuck. I really hope 2013 is a better year.
I think Julian Malone’s mixtape shoulda got an honorable mention at least
props to shake for givin aesop rock some love
@kautiouskeith damn, another one i forgot. adding to mine haha.
@who cares, Brother Ali’s album was mostly about the most talked about subject this year in america, which was the economy. Most albums did not really zero in on that topic which was clearly the most important thing on the minds of most people in 2012. As for this year vs last year, I definitely think it was a good year for hip hop. Even though weak shit got the most praise cause you had these industry cats spending more time praising gimmicky singles then they did talking about full bodies of work but it was still a good year in hip hop.
No GOOD Music tracks or album ?! That’s about it missing though.
@Who Cares.. Who cares about ur shitty ass reviews. u seem like the type to give a album a 5/10 to be different cus every1 else praised it. smh hate hipsters like you. 2013 was a great year in hiphop
*2012
ahhh that time of the year when the hating begins soon as you guys drop the list,I LOVE what you guys put year after year, how you still want to do it over the hate is amazing
where is SHYNE at?!?!?!?
LOL!LLLLL!!!!LL!L!L!L!!!
Shakes list is spot on.. Almost. I am so suprised he included Swerves Barrelhouse LP. It’s for sure in my top 10 this year but I never expected it to get a honorable mention on a mainstream site like 2dopeboyz. My only complaint is Y’all are so trendy these days. I mean Wiz Khalifa got a mention? Good god. That had to be a paid for slot or something. No Blu? No mention of oddisee? Big slip ups in my book.
good lists…Smoke Dza- Rugby Thompson is missing on the albums and Meyhem Lauren- Mandatory Brunch Meetings missing on mixtapes… just my opinion, both artists made huge strides this year and put out dope projects
and people keep mentioning Blu who is a dope artist I’m a huge fan of but he is a constant underachiever I want to love his projects but his last two I come away let down… still rockin his old shit though
No C4C?
I THINK THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR ARE…
1. Ab-Soul – Control System
2. Kendrick Lamar – GKMC
3. Nas – Life Is Good
4. Brother Ali – Mourning in America
5. Killer Mike – R.A.P. Music
6. ScHoolboy Q – H&C
7. Wu-Block
8. The Man With the Iron Fists Soundtrack
9. Xzibit – Napalm
10. Game – Jesus Piece
Come on yall aint got “Summer X Effect” on the list?! Its was so Raw & Authentic! This was a cool yr for hip hop 5yrs from now yall be complaning about how music aint what it use 2 be in 2012!
Dope lists… If it was me though, I’d throw Dizzy Wright in there somewhere.
@Rezo: THANK YOU!
Album of the Year
1. Good Kid Maad City (Kendrick Lamar)
2. The Heist (Macklemore)
3. Life Is Good (Nas)
4. Habits & Contradictions (ScHoolboy Q)
5. RAP Music (KIller Mike)
6. Cruel Summer (Good Music)
7. Jesus Piece (The Game)
8. Control System (Ab-Soul)
9. Troubled Man (T.I.)
10. Live From The Underground (Big KRIT)
Mixtape Of The Year
1. Yellow Album (Dom Kennedy)
2. Popular Culture (XV)
3. Baby Face Killa (Freddie Gibbs)
4. D.R.U.G.S. (Flatbush Zombies)
5. Rich Forever (Rick Ross0
6. Macadelic (Mac Miller)
7. 1999 (Joey Bada$$)
8. 517 West Queens Street (Thurz)
9. ForEvaNaDay (Big KRIT)
10. Ivy League Club (CyHi)
Meka, where is freddie gibbs BFK on ur mixtape list? That might be the mixtape of the year! U listed a Bucha no names and that Dee Goodz tape was weak…Shake was spot on tho.
this pro era tape deserves at least an honorable mention imo… really enjoyed it
What happen to best instrumental albums
Those are some good picks. Here’s some albums/mixtapes that I thought were really good. Would make my top ten list.
Albums
Oddisee – People Hear What They See
DJ Shadow – Reconstructed
Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes
Mixtapes
Captain Murphy – Duality
Yo, uh if you didn’t know killakali. 2dopeboyz are the people who put out The Barrelhouse LP. so i don’t know wtf your talking about them being 2 trendy.. retard.
@rezo @Trill O’Reilly
You fools come off as haters for real.
If you look at other best of the year lists all over the web, those TDE albums are usually all in there.
Glad to see Ab-Souls Control System as top album since it is an amazing body of work and I think its the best of 2012.
Probably the best Top 10′s I’ve seen. Personally mine would be (no order). 1. Kendrick Lamar – GKMC, 2. Ab-Soul – Control System, 3. Joey Badass – 1999, 4. Nas Life Is Good, 5. Killer Mile – R.A.P Music, 6. Dom Kennedy – Yellow Album, 7. Big KRIT – 4 Eva N A Day, 8. Wu Block, 9. Action Bronson – Blue Chips, 10. Currensy – Stoned Immaculate.
Albums no order: 1. GKMC
2. Food & Liquor 2
3. Life Is Good
4. God Forgives, I Don’t
5. Trouble Man
6. Habits & Contradictions
7. Control System
8. The Stoned Immaculate
9. Alive & Living (Skeme)
10. Jesus Piece / Finally Rich
ATOY opinion: GKMC but Nas & Lupe & T.I. A close 2nd
Mixtapes no order:
1.Folarin
2. Dreamchasers 2
3. Rich Forever
4. Taylor Allderdice
5. 4EvaNaDay
6. Macadelic
7. Yellow Album
8. 1999
9. Baby Face Killa
10. Detroit
MOTY opinion: 4EvaNaDay / Dreamchasers 2 & Taylor Allderdice all tied for #1s. Detroit, Folarin, Rich Forever are tied for #2s.
I AGREE 100% with yall choices however… Truth or Truth by Slaughter House is My #1 choice for song of the year Ab-soul Nirubru (if I spelled it right) #2
P.S No matter how bad yall talk about Wiz. Taylor Allderdice was HOTTT as ISH straight through it wasnt kush and OJ but it was damn close
Take Control System off my list and put Fizzyology there instead at #18. As for GKMC being AOTY? According to the “industry” thats the case but I still cant say with complete confidence that its the best album this year. Play that album for someone who is not caught up in Kendrick mania and see what they say. Honestly
And the Folarin tape? NO, its time for Wale to stop being every rapper in hip hop all rolled in to one every time he makes music and figure out what he wants to do. He goes from MC type wordplay to French Montana impersonations all in one verse sometimes. Stop it Wale
I think this year was mediocre when it came to basically everything. Music was average (although we got a lot less SHITTY albums, we had close to zero future classics, the only one being GKMC, even though El-P, Roc Marci, and a couple others made great projects). Video games were average. Movies were average (like, people seriously think The Avengers is a great movie. Really? I mean it was entertaining but a GREAT MOVIE? FOH). Well, I think 2013 will be much better though. We’ll probably get a Jay-Z project. Q & Soul should release their “debut” albums. That Cruel Winter project HAS to be better than the Cruel Summer album. We might hear something from Jay Elec’s album? Big KRIT will make a DOPE album (not mixtape), instead of an incredibly AVERAGE one. Curren$y & Alchemist project maybe? That Blackstar project? A GOOD J. Cole album? A lot of shit to look forward to.
great to see Skyzoo’s “A Dream Deffered” on here, that album was mad slept on. Probably half the people commenting didn’t even check it out. Was easily Skyzoo’s most accomplished album to date.
No Channel ORANGE for Album of the Year? This list is meaningless…and neither of the two best Mixtapes are on here? Wiz’s Taylor Allderrice and Flatbush Zombies D.R.U.G.S.
Alchemist doesn’t get any recognition?? Only a honorable mention for the rare chandeliers?? I thought you guys were hip hop heads?? What about the homie Knxwledge?? I know he got a bandcamp page but you never big it up?? Russian Roulette wasn’t good enough?? How about yacht rock.. You guys gotta do better ALC was the biggest draw all year, the no idols album was crazy.. Idk man you guys gotta do better TI really? Smh
I’m a big TDE fan too. But Blu and Exile definitely should be up there.
NO BIG BABY GANDHI?????????????????
I respectfully disagree with the omission.
Fav Albums:
Nas- life is good
Kendrick- GKMC
Aesop- Skelethon
AB- Control System
Asap- Long Live Asap
Dark Time Sunshine- ANX
Schoolboy Q- Habitz & Contradictions
Grynch- Perspective
Game- Jesus Piece
Reks- Straight no chaser
Mixtapes:
Action & Alchemist rare chandeliers
JoeyBadass- 1999
Pro Era Peep the apo….
Action Bronson Blue Chips
Childish Gambino Royalty
IMO only. Lots of other quality ish this year.
Uh oh Forever FC made the list. #704
@Tahild, The Gangrene album was ALC’s best work this year and personally one of my favorite albums along with the EP and all the videos but the reason why its so low on my list or not even mentioned at all on other lists is because I believe others dont “get” ALC or his music. THAT is why an artist like T.I is gonna be more appreciated by the fans and its because they understand the music he makes. ALC is a dope artist and so is Blu (even though he’s WAYYYY better then what he puts out most times), but I believe there is something lost in translation between their music and the fickle part of hip hop fans which happens to be the majority of fans. Same with Skyzoo, even though I still had him in my top 5 for albums this year and same with Ab Soul even though I put Fizzyology there instead after thinking about what I personally enjoyed more. These artists are all obviously dope at what they do but I still think there is a problem with how they convey or deliver their music to the majority of hip hop fans that may not understand what their doing musically. I still think it was a good year hip hop but part of me agrees with those that think it could’ve still be alot better.
@Tahild, Oh yeah and unfortunately alot of these type of hip hop fans will always assume “new is automatically better then”, artists that have been doing their thing for years. Their logic for this will be, well if ALC, Blu, Skyzoo and others similar to them haven’t “blown up” then they cant be better then say Asap Mob… Smh
@Tahlid, Devin and anybody else that wonders why somebody they think is dope is not mentioned on a list. I think that comment applies across the board in regards to them all.
TDE did alot of projects and features this year. They deserve to be #1
No RUGBY THOMPSON tho?!?!?!?
I like how y’all come off every year because it is what YOU were personally listening to and not some BEST OF list. Even tho you said it in the caption IDK if people get that. For that reason, I will withhold comments about disagreements. Also, I agree Ab-Soul was one of the best albums of the yr. Thanks for another great yr of 2DBz.
Has anyone even mentioned Fashawn’s Champagne & Styrofoam Cups???
Strange Clouds?
I honestly have no problem with their lists, but they kinda dissed my boy E-40 by not even giving a nod to the man’s hustle; with a total of 5 damn albums released in 1 year. I don’t care if you hated 90% of the tracks(which would speak volumes), my boy deserves an honorable mention on every damn blog that even considers themselves “underground” or “hip hop”
Moka Only is easily slept-on, too, since he’s just a canadian whiteboy. However, he pops out 2 albums a year with a consistency that I can only compare to the great e40 himself.
I honestly would rather just skip the AOTY list garbage if I didn’t go apeshit and list just about every damn thing that came out, a-la Dart Adams. I never 100% agreed with his lists, but he puts out the best effort, by far.
Surprised No Mention of New God Flow w/ Ghostface.
You guys always have the best end year lists. Good work.
Top 10 Albums
1) Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid M.A.A.D City
2) Nas – Life Is Good
3) Apollo Brown & OC – Trophies
4) Macklemore – The Heist
5) Blu & Exile – Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them
6) Oddisee – People Hear What They See
7) Ab-Soul – Control System
8) Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor 2
9) Big Krit – 4eva N a Day
10) Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson – Dice Game
Aesop Rock – Skelethon
Killer Mike – R.A.P. Music
El-P – Cure 4 Cancer
Roc Marciano – Reloaded
Sean P – Mic Tyson
Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions
Action Bronson – Blue Chips
Woulda put Miguel’s album up there if R&B was included. Shit’s dope
No love for Crooked i’s p82v6 ?
peep the aprocalypse??? cmon shit was dope af. and yes stoned imaculate should have been on da list.
Food & Liquor 2
Strange Fruition
Around My Way – one of the best lead singles off an album this year
Audubon Ballroom
Put Em Up
Battle Scars – is like 7x platinum at this point and I know what your thinking but still…
Brave Heart
Form Follows Function
Unforgivable Youth
Hood Now
Honorable mention – American Terrorists 2 and 3 and the FOTP mixtape that dropped at the end of 2011. That shit was creative as fuck.
For that AOTY position, im sorry but there is no way in hell that Control System can fuck with that and even though GKMC may have sold more and Kendrick did live up to the hype, imo Food & Liquor is just way too heavy off an album for anything this year to fuck with. Some people dont like this album and you dont have to be a fan of Lupe but honestly… COMEONSON.
No chuuwee on the lists? :(
^^ chuuwee should have got a slot 2. we need a track from swerve and chu. the 2 future kings of sactooooooown.
@sactown4eva I feel you bruh! 916 all day chuuwee and swerve getting slept on!
HOMEBOY SANDMAN. KARRIEM RIGGINS. NOT GOOD KID MAD CITY.
TDE got the belt, hold it down if nothing else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only thing i would add is cyhi da prynce in the mixtape section
Cruel Summer?
JET Life – Jet World Order 2? C’mon haha
Public Enemy dropped 2 albums. They both deserve at least an honourable mention but it’s understandable that they didn’t make any of the lists coz they were promoted poorly
@james MOKA ONLY IS A BROTHER. HE IS JUST THE LIGHT OF SHADES.
APPARENTLY “LOL” IS SOMEONE ELSE’S ACCOUNT. THAT’S NOT ME IN THE PIC. LOL.
I’m glad that Danny! Swain made an appearance more than once. That kid got his ish together and it’s all working out.
I would also add his cohorts ILLMont for a mixtape honorable mention.
I would have loved to see an Aaron Cohen honorable mixtape metnion as well. That kid is a really good spitter and has a lot of promise.
What about Chuuwee and Paypa? Those guys were working hard this year as well.
And of course…XV always gets honorable mentions but never MOTY’s…SMDH. That’s my only real gripe though, but wait a sec…
Oh yes, Statik Selektah needs love every year. And that STRONG ARM STEADY Stereo Type album was a lot of heat that no one even felt, it’s a damn shame. That was on the top of my AOTY for 2012 for sure.
props to the G named Swerve!!
Did I see somebody say this was a average year, really? Seriously? Alc did his thing on cigarette boats, that “Preist Andretti” was nice to, didnt 9th come wit something this yr 2? I’m still baffled on how Jesus’s “Summer X Effect” aint even on honorable mention you must snort crack with your ears for not putting that project on anylist! Chuwee most def need more recoginition, Oddisee shoulda been on there, young roddy’s mxt was decent also
Soul Tape 2. Jesus Piece + a lot of the #SundayService songs
Bishop Lamont – The Layover for best mixtape (street album) of the year.
Apollo Brown & O.C. – Trophies
Apollo Brown should have received some sort of mention, either for the album I listed above or Dice Game with Guilty.
Gerald Walker Believers Never Die?
no mac & cheese 3, no credibility. for the culture.
No Handouts is not here though?
Top songs Shake?
Its sucks that Lupe will always get overlooked because of the beef this blog has towards him, but he definitely put out one of the best albums this year with FL2
any person who’s mixtapes of the year list doesn’t include soul tape 2 instantly loses credibility
