I hear dudes make the same complaints about Nas, Common, Lupe, Royce, Black Thought and plenty of other guys all the time. Cole’s not up there with them, but that’s where he eventually wants to be, and if you judge him by his best work, he has potential. Majority of people talking shit based on one or two quick listens of the album and features, when they all know that this commercial shit in hip hop causes rappers to dumb it down a lot. Remember Nastradamus? Yeah… Friday Night Lights and his other mixtapes had plenty of quality album material, but they wouldn’t have done as well as Sideline Story did. It wasn’t a great album, but it wasn’t half as bad as most of you niggas are making it out to be. Jay’s not going to cosign anybody now that doesn’t put out material that will do decent numbers. When Jay was at Def Jam and had Joe Budden, one of the best lyricists in it that was putting out mixtapes better than a lot of albums coming out, he didn’t push him partly because he wouldn’t have had the mainstream appeal Jay looks for.
