Is it me or is the senseless murder of young black men at an all time high?! I know I’m not the only person who feels this way. At this very moment, we are Trayvon Martin. We are Sean Bell. We are Oscar Grant. Me. You. Everybody.
What has society come to?! A 17 year old, young man by the name of Trayvon Martin was shot to death on February 26 by Zimmerman, the self appointed captain of a neighborhood watch committee in Sanford, Florida. Unarmed, wearing a hoodie, baggie pants and sneakers and black, is that all it takes to look threatening?! As people, we have to do better, be better. Is anything even remotely shocking anymore?! Or have we become so desensitized by this constant barrage of the same bad news that we have become numb to everything?! I kept asking myself: “Do I want to write this article? What can I say what hasn’t been said yet?” And my friends response: “I understand what you’re saying, but think about it like this. There are still people who don’t know that this is going on right now.” So I am writing this for Martin, Bell, Mumia, Grant and the countless of innocent lives that have been snatched away too soon that don’t get the national attention that it deserves. Because you can believe there are a greater amount of murders that do not even get half the national attention as the names that have been submitted to the press outlets.
“Too many mistakes be happening to black folks.” Redman stated this on his 1996 record “What U Looking 4″ a song that detailed his frustration with the racial profiling by police that takes place in urban neighborhoods everyday . What happened to the young brother Martin was a senseless act of violence. And in this climate you can’t help but pose the question, was it because he was black? I can’t point to anything else. Martin was followed, Zimmerman complained and felt that he was a threat, but a threat to who exactly? Skittles, Ice Tea and a phone were found in his pocket. And he screamed for help until he was shot in the chest. What’s sickening is that this happens all the time but because there is currently evidence that points to Zimmerman being guilty, the justice department and FBI are involved.
The detailed last phone conversations from the girl… That details of the last moment’s of his life. The girl told him to run but he didn’t want to, he wasn’t going to… Imagine being 17 and having to run from your own life, asking someone, “What are you following me for?” I don’t know how disturbing this can get anymore. Why would anyone at 17 have to fear for his life?! Zimmerman said Martin looked high and suspicious and walking around slowly. I can’t shake the fact that wearing a hoodie, being black, baggie jeans is what constitutes for looking suspicious. Or is it just enough? Why should I have to tell my friends to be careful everytime they’re stepping foot out of the house so I won’t have to hear it on the news that they’ve gotten shot. Or don’t reach for the pockets because they’re going to suspect that you have a weapon. Or when the cops follow my friends home. And this is all for being black.
I see TrayVon in everyone of my peers. I ask: are marches, movements, articles that people write even enough anymore?! What can we do as a society to prevent this from happening again to the next person? What are we showing our children?! What do we teach our sons? Do we tell our son’s that even before they become of a legal age, they’re going to be labeled as a threat to society? How can one raise them to be the opposite? We don’t even know what “the opposite” is?! Does anyone remember Oscar Grant? It was only a few years ago. Footage was caught on camera and his shooter got away. Cold Blooded Murder. How can we possibly handle the injustices of our system?! These are questions that I often ask myself. And I’m tired of the bullshit. In the spirit of the late TrayVon and to the participants who stood together in his honor at the million hoodies march in New York, I feel proud that we are coming together and standing strong against police brutality. We’ve been beaten and scarred for too long. We’ve come too far. I pray that TrayVon’s death is not in vain, but the tipping point for a wake up call. As sad as this may seem, it’s a harsh reality, this could’ve easily been anyone of us.

When in reality, 70 out of every 100 persons arrested this past decade have been White. And contrarily the remaining 30 percent have been minorities. But this is not a reflection of incarceration rates. It’s the embodiment of disproportion.

Every year there are murders in double digits where the victim was black and unarmed and not the one that cause the incident. When they get murdered by someone who is not black they are let go because murdering someone black is looked at as self defense even when the victim was never a threat. How are ya’ll missing that problem right there? Do you read a newspaper or watch the news? How many black people have been killed that were NEVER in any gang? The emotionalism that this case has stirred up is understandable. But what do we do after it “dies down”? Once Zimmerman is arrested and tried, then what? Witnesses said there was a scuffle but they did not see if Trayvon threw the first punch and Zimmerman himself said Trayvon was running so that leads me to believe Trayvon was trying to lose him but when he saw that he was still being followed he decided to stop running. Then I believe Zimmerman started to try to grab him so Trayvon threw a punch which is understandable if your feel your in danger. Then I believe Zimmerman shot him, now if your “neighborhood watch” that means you are to watch not try do the cops job. 2nd if you have a gun and the other person does not and is running from you, which is something Zimmerman said himself then I believe he had the upper hand in the situation and on top of that he had the police on the phone and he was told not to follow Trayvon.

Obviously something must have went down AFTER the police phone call. Who cares what Zimmerman “sounded” like on the phone call. Zimmerman was on neighborhood watch, saw a suspicious male lurking about, who turned out of be a thug drug dealer. Drug dealers look suspicious by nature. So I can’t blame Zimmerman for suspecting him. What happened after the police phone call and their confrontation is what matters. And according to reports, Zimmerman was attacked.

None of them are eye witnesses in the case. Trayvon was heard yelling for help before the shot and after the shot was fired, Trayvon was heard and then seen on the ground screaming for his life. Zimmerman was standing on his feet. He had some bruises to his face but appeared to NOT be injured and he did not go to the hospital after the shooting.

Former NAACP leader C.L. Bryant is accusing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton of “exploiting” the Trayvon Martin tragedy to “racially divide this country.”
“His family should be outraged at the fact that they’re using this child as the bait to inflame racial passions,” Rev. C.L. Bryant said in a Monday interview with The Daily Caller.
The conservative black pastor who was once the chapter president of the Garland, Texas NAACP called Jackson and Sharpton “race hustlers” and said they are “acting as though they are buzzards circling the carcass of this young boy.”
Jackson, for example, recently said Martin’s death shows how “blacks are under attack” and “targeting, arresting, convicting blacks and ultimately killing us is big business.” (SEE ALSO: Jesse Jackson says Trayvon Martin ‘murdered and martyred’)
George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, killed Martin, a 17-year-old black man who was unarmed at the time of his death, last month. Zimmerman has claimed to have shot Martin in self-defense and has not been charged with a crime.
But Bryant, who explores the topic of black-on-black crime in his new film “Runaway Slave,” said people like Jackson and Sharpton are being misleading to suggest there is an epidemic of “white men killing black young men.”
“The epidemic is truly black on black crime,” Bryant said. “The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men.”
Bryant said he wishes civil rights leaders were protesting those problems.
“Why not be angry about the wholesale murder that goes on in the streets of Newark and Chicago?” he asked. “Why isn’t somebody angry about that six-year-old girl who was killed on her steps last weekend in a cross fire when two gang members in Chicago start shooting at each other? Why is there no outrage about that?”
Bryant said he worries that “people like Sharpton and those on the left” will make Martin’s death a campaign issue in the presidential race.
He speculated that they will “turn this evolving tragedy of this young man into fodder to say… if you don’t re-elect Obama then you will have unbridled events or circumstances like this happening in the streets to young men wearing hoodies.”
He also criticized President Obama for his “nebulous statement” responding to Martin’s death that “if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”
“What does that mean?” Bryant asked. “What was the purpose in that?”
I just wanna know who said black people are not mad about black on black crime? Do you think were happy about it? 2nd Obama was ASKED about Trayvon Martin so he gave an answer and he has the right to, why? HES THE PRESIDENT. I walk into a grocery store that’s less then a mile from my house almost every day and I’m used to hearing random codes spoken thru the speaker followed by the dumbass workers looking at me suspiciously till I leave and I’m sure that happens ALOT to every teenager ..zimmerman was one of those “rent-a-cops” that abused his authority waaaay too much…regardless of everything I just said he fucking killed somebody with no criminal record and those cops down there are not doing there job
flip the script. white kid black man. same scenario. black man would have been arrested at the scene. there wouldn’t be people all over the place saying the kid was a bad seed. anyone who would suggest that he were a bad seed, even if he sold black tar heroine, people would call you insensitive for suggesting he was a bad kid. its fucking bull shit. and you all know its true, if you can honestly look yourself in the mirror and say to yourself that this wouldn’t be totally different if the kid were white then you’re an ignorant fuck living under a rock.
In the last 15 months Zimmerman called the police over 46 times to report suspicious looking black men in the community. Neighbors report that he was fixated on being a crime stopper and was keeping a watch out for black males. Zimmerman has also been complained on by people in the community for being over aggressive. Trayvon was 140 pounds, Zimmerman was 250, Trayvon had no criminal record, Zimmerman was arrested in 2005 for resisting arrest and battery on a police officer.
At the end of the day twitter, facebook, school suspensions have NOTHING to do with this case that’s like someone going outside right now and shooting and shooting the first person they say and afterwards looking up their facebook profile and seeing a bunch of violent and inappropriate statuses and saying “well they had it coming to them” SMH
