william talks about having this amazing criminal past but never talks about graduating school, going to university to study criminal justice, working as a c.o, not getting in trouble with the law untill 2008. funny thing is all the stuff he does talk about has been proved lies cause he been exposed so many times. his fans dont seem to understand that its all a marketing scheme aimed at the young people cause they think that lifestyle and being bad is cool. You know, I’m going to speak my peace on this one (in my second post on this site). I’m definitely being honest and it damn sure doesn’t have anything to do with me “hating” on Rick Ross, naw, I’m NOT going to call him that, I’ll call him “Officer Ricky”. I’ll admit, last year, for some reason (probably the production) he grew on me, and he grew on me to a point where I bought Trilla, Deeper Than Rap, Teflon Don, and the MMG compilation album (the comp I bought this year). I stayed away from his first album, Port Of Miami, because I didn’t like it at all. Now, leading up to the supposed announced December release of God Forgives, I Don’t (and its delay), I came to the realization that, although it took a while unfortunately, this guy raps about THE SAME THINGS over and over on usually great production with NO ARTISTIC growth whatsoever, and to think I was going to buy a 5th album with that same stuff was absolutely out of the question. THEN, even though I was aware of his, uh, background, I started thinking back to when it was reported that he was a CO back in the day, and how he denied it multiple times, then came back and admitted it, that activity right there does NOT sit well with me at all. Add up all of this and I’m clearly not a fan of this guy any longer. Maybe, just maybe, had he been up front and honest in the beginning I would have a little respect for him, but that ship has sailed completely. Some say “well, it’s all about the music”. In some cases, it is, but when you deny something only to admit it later, MOST people will look at you a little different and from there it’s no longer “all about the music”. It still puzzles me the amount of cosigns this guy receives from artists I like and been supporting for a long time (Nas & Jay-Z, my #1 and #2 favorite artists of all time, respectively, Jadakiss, Kanye West, Styles P, etc), not to mention how in demand he is, smh. I sold all of his albums, as they’ll never return to my collection. They never should’ve been there in the first place. And again, this

It is all about the music though. You have to disassociate the artist with the work they release; you don’t *really* know who any of your favorite musicians are when there’s no press around. For all you know Jadakiss (just for example) is horribly frightened of kittens and goes on calm walks through nature every day.
It doesn’t matter. This obsession with keeping it real in hip-hop is idiotic since nobody keeps it real: any rapper who is making music and touring is NOT in the hood. They are NOT doing what they say; rappers who really do that shit are either dead (Project Pat) or in jail (the waviest – owww). Think of all these rappers with wives and kids talking about piping hoodrat bitches when they’re really family men. Raekwon doesn’t sell crack anymore. He hasn’t in years. Does that mean Cuban Linx 2 is ass? Fuck no. That shit is dope.
The real reason people dislike Rick Ross isn’t because he’s lying about his hood credentials. It’s because he’s one of the hottest rappers in the game right now, and it’s natural for hip-hop nerds (aka most of this site’s population) to resent rap that’s so transparently “popular.”
Just take the music for what it is and judge the man based on that. Nas has an eighth grade education, Eminem’s baby mother is still alive and bitching, and Rick Ross was a correctional officer. None of that shit affects how the music sounds.

“It is all about the music”. I agree with this and the fact that we don’t really know what any of these artists are really like when the smoke and cameras disappear, but the content featured in an artists work will always be associated as a direct representation of their lifestyle.
With that being said, if every one of an artist’s songs talks about trafficking illegal substances and spending time with some of the most notorious criminals in the world, a listener can not help but assume that this artist is involved with this kind of activity. In this way, the listener, fans, and general public are being lied to. Whether the fans take the content of his songs seriously or not is up to the individual listener.
Songs aren’t required to convey truthful information or stories but if an artist has fabricated an elaborate criminal backstory and image that was proven to be 100% false, I don’t understand how Rick Ross’ situation would differ from an artist like “Vanilla Ice”.
