AFH catches up with the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Kendrick Lamar, Skyzoo, Freddie Gibbs, Skillz, Murs and more to ask them who their first favorite rapper was. And now I’d like to turn the question to y’all. Mine? DMX.
PREVIOUS: Your (2)Dope Opinion: What’s the First Piece of Music You Bought?

Rakim Allah
probably Eminem.. i was 10 and he was cool. Now he’s garbage in my opinion

Eminem, Kanye & Common
The Fresh Prince
I’m on the west coast, so my first favorite rapper was Eazy E….
Joe Budden. got me through so much in life, still does.
2pac…All Eyez on Me was the first cd I ever got
First it was the Beastie Boys (mostly because of Intergalactic), then it was Jigga (mostly because of Hard Knock Life) and then it was Pac (mostly because people were on his dick calling him the GOAT), then it was Biggie (cuz you know, being Pac´s rival he had to be somewhat good) and that´s when I found real hip-hop and I´ve never had another favorite rapper ever (but I think Kendrick is ready to snatch that spot anytime now).
The Clipse.
Big L
As much as I hate to say this Kriss Kross lmao I was 7 don’t judge me
KRS-One & Rakim. At that time in hip-hop, I couldn’t choose between the two.
Juvenile!! The first explicit rap album I ever got (i say explicit because i did have a Will’s Smith album before) was 400 Degreez.
Between The Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. Mo Money Mo Problems was the first rap song I knew verbatim as a 3rd grader. Vol. 3: The Life and Times of S. Carter was the first rap album I loved.

Pac, without a doubt. Definitely the first I listened to. About three years after he died, kinda made me feel like “damn, He was just here.” Used to listen to every album by em, bought about three pac records in one year, lmao. I’ll be real though, I don’t listen to any Pac today, minus “I Get Around” & “Changes”
@Fred

Mic Geronimo was my first favorite rapper. Then AZ. Q Tip, Prodigy and Planet Asia followed.

Yoke the Joker >>>>>>>
the first hip hop song that i listened to was 40 Oz. by D12 and umm i think i was 9 or 10. after the first listen rly enjoyed Em’s verse, became my first fav later, though here he’s not as hot as before but still gotta love him. by now my top5 are Black Thought, Nas, Raekwon, Mos Def and Scarface. youknowwhatimsayin?
Big Pun and Biggie were my first favorite rappers. I love the big guys I guess.
Big Daddy Kane…
Jay-Z around the time the first Blueprint came out, I was in like the 4th grade.
Kurtis Blow!!!
Jay, back when Blueprint came out. ‘Never Change’, ‘All I Need’, jams. Started listening to Nas around the same time because of the beef. It’s been a ride since then.
Cypress Hill
By looking at a lot of the first favorite rapper(s), I see why there are soooo many immature comments always left in the c-section. Yall some young ass mu’fuckas lol
Nas
Black Thought a close second.
KRS-ONE

http://hulkshare.com/16n0jz46h060
youngcosby u look like so youngass also aint you? btw what was yo first fav rapper ? Malcolm X or Adam and Eve?
Jay-Z, around the time of The Black Album.
Eminem. I remember watching music videos of him when I was like 12 and I wasn’t allowed to listen to pretty much any rap. I’m only 16 btw. Also Chiddy Bang was what really got me into rap as a genre.
Gotta say Big L, first time i heard ‘Put It On’ i was like “wow this is the best ishh I’ve ever heard”
BIG L
Chamillionaire. I became a fan when he was still underground. He made me see that southern rappers could actually body other rappers on the mic.
outkast and that ain’t never change
Jay. I was late to the party, I heard the blueprint freshman year of high school and it was no turning back.
Joe Budden. got me through so much in life, still does.
——————
@Dino I hear ya man

The Notorious B.I.G.
Based God
william smith… IM GOIN TO MIAMI hahaha
Nelly
Mine had to be 50 Cent. I was in middle school when that Get Rich or Die Trying came out.
All the BIGS (NOTORIOUS,PUN,KANE AND L)
Rhyming was to easy for them man, killed everything they touched.
Pac
Phonte, no question… I remember being like 15 and not that into rap. Then I heard “Lovin It” on some community access radio show. I went crazy, bought the album and became the biggest LB fan ever.
drought 3 made me like music. tough to see where wayne is now..
Mos Def, Black on Both Sides
The Mighty Mos Def. His style was so ill. The natural vibe about his music was that it flowed smoothly.
DMX
As far as i can remember…Lupe fiasco.Back when he put out Food and Liquor and The Cool
Methode man and wu tang, with a Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Eminem
Eminem after I heard Marshall Mathers LP/Slim Shady LP, which got me into Hip Hop. Still the coldest MC to ever touch a mic in his prime. No one has ever been on that level.
Then probably Ghostface or Raekwon after I heard 36 chambers.
Eminem. Every morning before elementary school i was watching music videos and The real slim shady was my hit! Was probably aroud 6 years old.
Eminem before Encore. After that, it became Wayne (since I grew up on him anyways) and then it transferred back to Em near the REcovery period.
rachel starr..
DMX! Once I heard “Stop Being Greedy” and then “Ruff Ryders Anthem” shit wasn’t the same after that. Then Busta took that spot with “Tear Da Roof Off”.
Homie from the Pokeman rap at the end of the episodes.
Kanye. College Dropout was just on a whole different level.
50 to t.i. To drake to j. Cole to Now… SKYZOO
Ice Cube.
Judging from the c-section, 2dopeboyz looks like it caters to the high school crowd. Kanye was your first favorite rapper? LMAO.
^^^^^
I hate jackasses like this. You think because your first favorite rapper was MF Doom or some other shit, that makes you better than others.
GTFOH
Special ED and Slick rick when I used to listen to what my uncles would play in the car. When I got older and actively sought out stuff myself Black Thought from 94 to this day.
Lazy Bone!
^^^^^^^Bizzy Bone. Bone had to be the first of any kinda music to pull me in 100%. J. Cole’s Bone sample on God’s gift had me hyped as fucked! Damn shit was sick…
Bone thugz
nas & bone thugz & mac dre & andre nickatina.
2pac you idiots.
Nas is mines but then he stopped making music for like long stretches at a time
My first album was Black Sheep, but my first favorite rapper, and by that I mean, I HAD TO HAVE EVERYTHING THEY EVER MADE, GUEST FEATURES, ECT was Ras Kass. Soul On Ice was and still is amazing to me. Today though, I don’t even check for him. Now my favorite rappers are Phonte, Murs, Kanye, Jay, Brother Ali and XV. Speaking of XV, loved his story and the fact that you guys closed the segment with him. Very well done. Good job.
Kieth Murray – The Most Beautifullest thing in this world is the song that made me a Hip Hop fan. That was before I learned how to decipher lyrics. lol Still like the song though
Can we give Canibus an Honorable Mention? If you were a hip hop head in your teens around 98-01, you know Canibus raised the bar for “lyricists.” Even if you hate his albums, you can’t deny those old DJ Clue and Tony Touch, and Funk Flex freestyles.
EMINEM. I really cant stand his music now but yeah. I was a fan loool
SNOOP DOGG! I grew up in the gangsta rap era and snoop dogg was one of the top artist to be the highlight of that time!
Chuck D…
When I was like 7 I member seeing the Fight The Power video for the first time and I was ready to go outside and set some shit on fire lol
Biggie to Nas to Jay-Z to Kanye to Yelawolf
Ludacris…then Lupe…then Lupe + Shad K
Repped Luda hard till I found an artist i didnt have to buy a clean album with…from then been an avid Lupe and Shad fan and will continue to be one….honourable mentions go to Kweli, Blu, and Elzhi
wayne, ludacris and eminem
2Pac until 8th grade then JayZ and Eminem
Outkast was HUGE too
Keepin it all the way all the way real? Aaron Carter when I was in the 4th grade maybe even 3rd that was my favorite rapper which evolved into nelly then murphy lee then I discovered B.I.G and Nas which opened me up to so much music it’s not even funny now It’s super close between Blu and Phonte
oh yeah and Doom Doom is one of my absolute favorites too
Cool J was a God when i was a kid.
Nasir Jones!
master p ghetto D was the first rap CD i ever listen to i was only 5 lol, im from tha south so it was alot of no limit and cash money, then i heard jay-z hard knock life so i became a huge jigga fan, it was ruff ryders, and Eminem, its crazy to see what i grew up on back then and see what kids grow up on now
ll cool j.
Big L is my favorite. However, Rakim, K.R.S.-O.N.E., Slick Rick, Kool G. Rap, and Big Daddy K.A.N.E. are the foundation of hip-hip. EVERY rapper after those five got at least one thing from one of them and this will NEVER change. Yes, there were rappers before them but those five took it up to a higher level. When they were in thier prime is when hip-hop was in it’s golden era. This was a period in time that can not and will not ever be duplicated. If you disagree I’m sorry but you are wrong.
