Debate: Is “5 Mics” In The Source Still Relevant? (Video)

The Internet has changed the Music Industry forever. Since fans and critics can access the music at the same time, does this make “album reviews” redundant? Where does this leave The Source Magazines classic album rating system “5 Mics”? How should it evolve?

  1. Childish Gambino’s Camp got a 4.

    Black Star got a 3.5.
    -
Different era, different criteria, etc. etc. I’m aware of that, and I don’t give a fuck. That’s just pisspoor awful. I don’t care about reviews of any type anymore, though.
    -
And the cutting in these videos is still worse than awful. When is someone gonna fix that.

  2. The Source isn’t relevant at all.

  3. Hasnt been relevant since they gave Lil Kim a 5

  4. Nope mag lost all credibility w/ the Benzino revelation. Plus at the time, the editors/writers/reviewers were respected in hip hop journalism. That’s what separated The Source from other hip hop mags, but those days are long gone. The opinions of the people still clinging to the remnants of what The Source used to be don’t anymore. They gave Lil’ Kim’s weak as Naked Truth album 5 mics! Really that shit on par w/ Nas, Big and Jay albums from the 90′s, GTFOHWTBS!

  5. I hate these hosts! for real.

and stop with the stupid editing! ITS NOT CATCHING ON!!!!!!

  6. but i love the way this guy speaks like he is the only one that can have an opinion on anything. what makes what you think of the album better then what i think? hes a fool.
and yes the editing is beyond terrible.. worst part is they seem to just be skipping the um’s and ahh’s the people are saying.
make it shorter if you feel you have to have this choppy editing.

  7. Haha funny thing is their asking has the source lost their relevance in rating albums, and even though it probably has, I would choose the Source opinion over these ducks ANY DAY. HAHA

  8. Getting 5 Source mics became irrelevant when the Marshall Mathers LP fell short.

  9. Yeah. Bun B 5? Nah son. Fuck outta here. Even he knows that album wasn’t a 5. Click my name if you are into hip hop criticism though. If some of y’all think you can do better hit me up.

  10. These guys totally shunned Little Brother. They Will NEVER have my respect as a credit Hip-Hop news/media organization. Its pure foolishness.

  11. The source is still the standard for rating hip hop –kind of…

  12. I’m confused, is Meka one of the debaters?? What’s with this blog posting all of these not so interesting debates by the same group? They basically asked the same question over and over again while the guys from the Source continued to give the same response over and over again.

  13. the source is irrelevant….BASEDGOD

  14. Half the people i speak to think the source doesnt exist anymore lol

  15. Man Eminem made it cool to hate the Source and he is now making Pop records. Get your heads out of your ass and realize this is a brand that is still doing quite well. I recently started to read it again starting with the Jeezy issue. Everything from what I see is great. I’m surprised to be honest but in the same sense XXL has completely fallen out.

  16. Whats The Source?

  17. Man I love how everyone says fuck the source. Shits funny style to me. Like you got hate for Benzino?? Cool than don’t buy Hip hop Weekly he doesn’t have shit to do with the mag. Man I read through the good times and the bad. Did they give Lil Kim 5? No the “regime” as y’all nigga’s call it did. Fuck Lil Kim Fuck Benzino Fuck whoever fucked up the source cause this shit is Hip-hop at the end of the day. Embrace it and get off these blogs.

  18. Yo @Simpassniggas I feel you but blogs took The Source space and all so how do the continue in the lane they are in. But ya I get what you are saying.

  19. whoever edits these clips needs to get their fucking fingers chopped off.

  20. theyve lost most of their credibility, lil kim and bun b didnt deserve theirs and yes a lot of now revered classics fell short, add the benzino scandal and the source is nowhere near us ubiquitous as it used to be

  21. The Source Magazine is still a staple of Hip-Hop. No denying that, thru trial and error it took dips at times even dives. But thats everything. Look at Nas does the recent shit he’s been supplying us take away from his classic and one of the top MC’s of all time stature. Be honest blog posts like this set up The Source to be hated on, I’m looking past it. Without The Source half of todays folks wouldn’t be here, hell who knows where the culture would be.

  22. I think to the artist a good rating in any magazine is great even if fans think the mag fell off. Lately The Source has been slowly rebuilding it’s former credibility. I use to prefer XXL but that mag has gone downhill imo. I use to be on the website everyday but now I avoid it like it’s my deathbed. Still got a subcription but that was a birthday gift I didn’t ask for. Anyways if i’m a fan of the artist based on past albums/eps/mixtapes/features on other artist music then i’ll check it out and make my own opinion.

  23. Bunb Trill Og : 5 mics. Watch The Throne: 3.5 mics. So what youre telling me is Trill Og is better than WTT??!!! Fuck outta here.!

  24. ^Watch the Throne was a let down, “& if you can’t admit that your whole perspective is wack.” Trill OG’s pretty good.

  25. I give a mic base on the potential of that artist whether this is his or her best work and how the songs focus on the theme of the album. Everybody is not lyrical and some artist like to make fun and not serious albums like Mac Miller. You cant compare an artist to another because everybody are different in their own way. You could only judge an artist from their past up to their recent work and decide whether if the music is the best in that time period and how long you think it will be relevant prior to the future. If you could replay the whole album over and over again without skipping then the album deserve a 4.5 or 5 mics. I Still read the source and XXL magazines for ratings. Everybody is a critic.

  26. nobody said shit about cats paying for mics in the source…

  27. I don’t like reviews cause they can persuade your opinion to either liking or disliking the album. There really is no need to judge if your gonna buy something based on a review if you can listen to samples off i tunes or just download it. I mean do you have to get approval from society to like something?

  28. ^That’s why I only read reviews after I already made my own opinion about the album.

  29. No it ain’t relevant anymore
    @Maga D I do the same shit.

  30. Every magazine/websites rating system SUCKSSS and has sucked since 99.

  31. The source aint been relevant since the Em/Benzino beef.

  32. @Jerel
Nigga you done fucked up. Cole World 8.5? ASAP´s mixtape 9.0? FINALLY FAMOUS 9.0? Nigga, I kept TWO tracks off of Finally Famous, I do it & Dance, not cuz they´re good but cuz they´re upbeat. That was the only reason. FF was a 2.5/10 album. It was trash. Hot garbage. Don´t fucking link that site again if you wanna keep yourself from getting embarassed.

  33. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    Hella mad lol

  34. @Mike Tomlin cosign!

If Marshall Mathers LP fell short, then nothing deserves a 5

  35. @Spike i agree with you 10 times over. Marshall Mathers LP was and is amazing. Front to back, every time..

  36. @ PictureThis: I have to disagree with you. This blog just made a post on The Source, an objective post, they didn’t give a view point. So how could they be setting The Source up to be hated on? I agree, The Source played a great role in hip hop, but in today’s world, it isn’t relevant. Fans will buy what they want when they want it no matter what The Source or anyone one else says. Its a different generation. Back then you NEEDED magazines like The Source to inform you. Nowadays you just don’t.

  37. Too many bloggers influence todays generation now. Mags are old school and come out monthly, i can read a review on a blog 24/7 – big difference. Smoking Sect for EX gave Pink Friday 3 Cigs / Rah Digga got 3.5 Cigs so you telling me a clown almost beat out Digga? Reviews are just opinions.

  38. not since they gave Lil’ Kim 5 mics. I can’t respect a magazine that has a long-standing beef with a fucking rapper. I’m not the biggest Em fan in the world, but if a magazine has a problem with such a high-profile rapper then there’s obviously some kind of bias. I realize the irony of saying this on 2dopeboyz (see: Lupe Fiasco, OFWGKTA) but 2dbz is not where I go to get album reviews or anything.

@Mike & Maga D: Watch the Throne is dope, but not a 5 mic album, neither is Trill OG. But I think I can say, without bias, that giving College Dropout a 4.5 and MBDTF a 5 (as much as I love MBDTF, I think that at least the grades should be the other way around) indicates too much inconsistency and fallibility in their marking.

  39. I think the real question is: Are these classic “hip-hop” magazines still relevant?/Have they evolved as much as the game has now days? I think the answer to both is no. I know personally, I am going no where near The Source, XXL, Vibe to get up-to-date information. It’s almost like with the progression of shitty mainstream “rap/hip-hop” comes shitty publications. If XXL literally thinks Fred The Godson is a top 10 “freshman”, how the hell am I supposed to feel about their publications’ credibility?

  40. But to the many points above, I definitely agree that while these magazine’s today might not have the allure they once did, there is no denying they are a staple to rap as a whole, and many many artists would not be around today if it weren’t for these classic publications

  41. Tyler, The Creator’s Bastard and Goblin both deserve 5 miss, whether it’s relevant or not..
    http://www.kidswastingtime.com/2011/12/10-best-ofwgkta-moments-part-3.html

  42. they ain’t been relevant since early 90′s and even then it was political who they gave it too

the source has always been (or at least when benzino got control) a propaganda tool to promote the kind of rap music they want the masses listeinig to i mean it was conceived at Harvard university ffs thats about as far removed from the streets as you can be

wise up people stop letting magazines, radio and tv tell you who to listeing to

  43. Eh, they are relevant in a way.
