After announcing a joint mixtape with Rick Ross yesterday, Drake reveals to XXL the reasoning behind scrapping his collaborative album with Lil Wayne..
Me and Wayne scrapped the idea of a collaboration album. We just agreed that it would be looked upon as… It would be sort of this competition [with Watch The Throne]. I feel like it would get caught in this whirlwind of hype. [Wayne] agreed. We just said, ‘If we do it, we’ll do it down the line. But right now is not the time.’
Interesting. Drake also sat down with Stereogum and discussed sample-clearance issues with Take Care, his writing process for the album, proposing to Nicki Minaj and more. Check the full in-depth interview here.

Rappers are scared to compete these days SMH thats not hip hop
piper said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
^^^You are pitiful dog, it’s niggas like you that makes his point valid and understandable. The msn said he didn’t want to do the album at this particular time because niggas (like you) who don’t have nothing better else to do was going to start comparing the two. SMH, and I’m guessing that your an aspiring “emcee” right? So you find one of your homies and you make a record and lets see how you do agianst WTT. Anyway the album would be dope, but to let these fake ass hip hop fans calm down first, it is best to wait.
Just a thought said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
If you think people will compare the two then just make it better. Scrapping the album just means you don’t think you can compete.
cameron said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
umm neither of them produce so it wouldn’t be as good and ya good thing they ain’t doing this rather see wayne and some produces/rapper
callmedaddy said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
That was a smart move on by Drake cause people would naturally compare that album with WTT when the point of making it wouldnt even be to compete with WTT because that shouldnt be the reason to make that kind of album. I think Drake doing a collab album is unnecessary anyway because Take Care should be his focus right now.
marty mcfly said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
Hold up! It sounds to me like Wayne and Drake think they even compare to Jay-Z n Kanye West…Do the math, they cant even compete…Jay-z n Kanye (Two most underrated, most hated rappers); Drake and Lil Wayne (two most overrated, pop rappers)>>>>>Tell me Im wrong…It took Jay ur most of ur lifetimes to get where he is now and it took Wayne n Drake 5 years for yall to start comparing the two SMFH!

I was looking forward to this project but I understand the reasoning behind not doing it. I guess if its meant to be it will.

Wouldnt we more likely to compare the album if its done in the future since by then Drake n Wayne would actually have the years under their belts to be compared to Kanye n Jay?…Anyway WTT was a great album next year its definately taking home a grammy, u think wayne n drakes album could compare subject matter wise?
true pt 2 said this on November 8th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
the time is about to be over for these mainstream suckas.. drake, wayne, Ye and whoever else.. if you are ready to transition check me out. youtube.com/crizeremusic

I can understand why they scrapped it, cuz whether it was a better album than Watch The Throne or not (Watch The Throne was a good album but not great) they would still be looked at as A) “biters” b) no one would ever actually admit that its might be better than Kanye n Jays album. So I understand, but at some point u gotta to say fuck all that and how people might feel, n do what you want to do as an artist. So I disagree with them scrapping it tho I understand why

Wait you idiots mean Drake has more time because Wayne been rapping for a long ass time. You Backpackers are retarded.
FRESHONE said this on November 8th, 2011 at 3:21 pm
Actually krow123 I can’t agree with you on that one, but we have different taste. I my opinion I think that their collaboration would have been pretty good if Wayne would stop spitting his struggle bars on everything he features on with drake and stop making drake the sideline singer in his songs as well. If Wayne goes back to spitting like he was circa “The Drought is Over 2″ & “Da Drought 3″ & Drake was on his circa “So Far Gone” & “Comeback Season” flow, then they’d have a smash hit as well as a respectable album, but all they care about is moving units at this point. Plus 40′s production would be able to compete with Kanye’s however I don’t know if 40 is as resourceful as Kanye is when trying to explore other genres of music. All in all a scraped project is still a scraped project.
graywolf said this on November 8th, 2011 at 3:23 pm
^If Wayne and Drake each added about 3-4 years to their careers, they would be more accurately comparable to Jay and Kanye.
Gent said this on November 8th, 2011 at 3:24 pm
Kendrick just spoke on the lack of competition in hip-hop and how it’s needed to sustain the quality of the music. I’m disappointed that they decided to scrap it because no matter when it comes out, it’s going to be compared to something. So why not take this time to use WTT as a frame of reference to create a project that’s stellar. Challenge yourself and stop being so afraid of competition.
Hip-hop has gotten so SOFT. The rappers are singing R&B, wearing lip gloss and skinny jeans, dissing other rappers “subliminally” because they’re too scared to say the name and act stupid when interviewers ask them about it.
So frustrating.

@Just a thought agree 100%. too many thirsty ass niggas always tryig to instigate shit instead of just appreciating art. fuck them. i approve of the idea being scrapped. hip hop fans are mostly just fuck boys with that high mentality of comparing everybody.
Frank said this on November 8th, 2011 at 5:16 pm
The one thing Drake has that 99% of all rappers lack is patience. And he kills the game with it.
real said this on November 8th, 2011 at 5:41 pm
@real dude what the fuck does that even mean. i hate it when niggas give rappers moronic compliments. where did you get 99% from? how do you measure a rappers patience? you just sound stupid.
Frank said this on November 8th, 2011 at 6:18 pm
They called off the collab album cuz both their albums sucked. Tech N9ne, Nas and 3 Stacks made the only track worth listening to on Carter 4. Heard that leak of Take Care, and if you have any sense of musical taste then u know that was straight audio garbage.

It’s dumb to me because no matter when they will come out with this collab album it’s still gonna be compared to WTT or any other collab album/ Mixtape that comes out around the time they release it it’s just what Hip Hop/ Rap was back then competition whether it was beef or just plain fun!
I understand people don’t always want their albums being compared to others but at the same time Wayne & Drake are grown ass men why does it matter now about the whole competition thing it didn’t matter before JUST RELEASE THAT SHIT WHEN “YOU” WANT NOT WHEN YOU FEEL ITS COOL OR SAFE! Or at least give your YMCMB fans a sample of songs with you two. Give em more MOTTOS for the New Year next year!
JAyP said this on November 8th, 2011 at 9:33 pm
Drake knows they cant compete so he’s picking his battles which is smart and it mite also be because he just doesnt have the time between his schedule and Waynes to complete that type of album. I said it before and ill say it again, WTT is not my favorite album this year but Drake and Wayne cant compete lyrically or beat wise. WTT is about new sounds for example No Church is like a rock n roll power anthem just like Why I Love You, Lift Off is a commercial fans dream from the beat to Beyonce being on the hook. Otis is probably the most dirtiest underground sounding mainstream single in hip hop this year. Who Gon Stop Me changes with the beat and so does Murder To Excellence. Made In America and H.A.M also have there own sounds. WTT is too risky for Drake and Wayne to attempt to do cause it would either be a huge victory or a complete disaster to their career if they tried to compete with the sound, let alone the subject matter. With all the musical experimentation on one album it would just be crazy to even try to compete with WTT. Now of course fans want a good competition and I cant blame them but I dont believe Wayne can make music like Jay and Kanye and on Take Care Drake sounds like he’s only competing against his last album cause the only time he gets hype on his shit is like Headlines and Lord Knows. I just dont think nobody can make the same type of album as WTT cause its a reason why Jay and Kanye are who they are and Drake and Wayne aint them.

Alright let me help out the simple minded, got to be hard all the time “just for my niggas”, I do real shit all day, everyday motherfucker type nigga. I’m beginning to think niggas on 2dbz are the dumb as fuck because bitch ass niggas such as yourself are so quick to comment without reading what was said. The only fucking thing I said was that Drake point was valid because right after I read his statement I seen a nigga talking the same ol WTT shit. I never said I was a fan of Drake but I do apperciate his, Wayne, Ye and Jay music. Right now other than Em, those four niggas are running the game and you know it. What’s hella gay is a grown ass man still trying to call somebody out especially on a Drake post. Honestly you must be his undercover GAY fan for even coming on the nigga post, thinking that his music and image is gay, then yo confused ass commented on the shit. I’m sure if you are from Philly, you may be the biggest bitch in the city, cause I got fam out their and they don’t hide behind computer screens and screens names and say bitch made comments as you have present. IDK why you dogging Drake you probably got LIL B on full blast right now, so get the fuck outta here you fake ass, bitch made nigga.
Just A Thought said this on November 8th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
@ Marty Mcfly , You are Funny. To be honest I think that Jay Z is the one that switched up and Trying something different because that album sound more like Kanye Than anything. And for No Church in the wild that Sound similar to Flashing Lights, Just listen to the drum patterns and the synths . WTT is just an album with a mix of other music genre like Rock, Rev, Opera, blues and ect. You dont have to get a hiphop producer to make an album like that. Believe me If Drake and Wayne do an Album, it wont be nothing like WTT, why try to compete when you have your own lane.
ThaTruth said this on November 8th, 2011 at 10:40 pm
Take Care is better than or on the level of Watch The Throne to me, and this is coming from a big Kanye fan. I don’t really give a fuck about comparing it to WTT I would’ve liked to hear the Drake/Wayne album, but whatever though
