As most of y’all know, the dopehouse is bringing Kendrick Lamar down to Florida for a one night show in Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow night. We’ll be chillin’ with the crew for the majority of the day and I figured I’d put the camera equipment to use and give y’all a chance to ask him some questions. So hit the c-section below with your best. And please, none of the “How was it like growing up in Compton?” or “When is the next album?” type. Let’s get a real discussion going on!

Kendrick,
Any chance of “Section.80″ coming to CD release release, or better still, vinyl?

How do you feel as a “West Coast” rapper and do you feel like you fit that mold or do you feel part of the new generation of hip-hop (good hip-hop that is)? What would you say to the critics that say you are not a west coast rapper? Do you feel that people want more of that old school hip-hop feel? Including that last question, do you think people that say you’re not a west coast rapper need to embrace the new era of hip-hop?

LMAO at people asking what is wrong with today’s hip hop and what he plans to do to change the West…. you guys are blind. I can go on for days but if many of you look in the mirror you’ll see the problem. The real question is what he plans to do when his music goes mainstream and all the people who love him now start to hate him because he’s “popular” Every artist changes because change is inevitable then all you ball swingers will hate him when he starts to change and does mainstream music…. At the end of the day music is subjective but great music is great music whether its mainstream or not.

On the song ‘Heaven or Hell’ (from (O)verly (D)edicated you rapped the whole verse about Hell, but when it came to depicting ‘heaven’ you let the verse fade out after a few bars. Why the big change in your voice? On tracks even only a few years old, you sound compeltely different, first with the “raspy” voice, and even a higher pitched voice on O.D. than on Section.80. Was this you just trying to find your “comfort zone,” or a concious effort to create a marketable sound? If the latter, what considerations were you making throughout the process?

It seems as if you (and the rest of TDE) are coming up with a much more mainstream-appealing sound (with the catchy choruses, catchphrases and slogans [HiiiPoWer, Soul!, marijuana hydro pussy ho ass titties, etc.]). I don’t mean that negatively, because none of you have lost your art or dumbed down your lyrics. However, is your goal ultimately to appeal to a wider audience and create a more marketable/profitable venture? Could you see yourself justifying a more mainstream, dumbed down sound to make more money?

On “Fuck Your Ethnicity” you have a very interesting bar: “ya’ll call it hip hop, i call it hypnotize / trap my body but free my mind”. I find this line incredibly dope because it eloquently captures the plight of hiphop. In many ways, hiphop is centuries ahead of mainstream america in terms of expressing and discussing social issues (race, social justice, drugs, etc- just about anything anyone has ever experienced) hence the “free your mind”. On the flipside, however, hiphop “traps” artists because mainstream america has an ignorant bias towards hiphop, seeing many of its messages and ideas as irrelevant and insignificant. Is this the interpretation your intended for when you wrote it? can you comment on the future of hip hop–will it ever have a mainstream voice that all americans can appreciate? 1

Kendrick, I’ve noticed a lot of parallel structure in your songs, but moreover I want to focus of the structure found in your song titles. O.D. has two examples: “Growing Apart (To Get Closer)” / “Cut You Off (To Grow Closer)” and “Alien Girl (Today With Her)” / “Opposites Attract (Tomorrow Without Her).” Section.80 finds parallel structure in His/Her Vices, Evils, and Pain. I’ve even noticed a similar structure in the names of your past three albums. EP OD 80. Eee Pee, Ohh Dee, Aye Tee. Do you just find it to be a powerful storytelling device, or is there more to it than that?

How tall are you? you look short.
You said you call that haircut the “Nappy Lamar,” my middle name is Lamar, should I get it?
The song that made me a fan was “Heaven & Hell,” the beat was so incredible–that’s what caught my attention–I loved it and after listening a few times I realized how dope the concept is too. I’ve been a fan ever since.
You inspire me, and like I said my middle name is Lamar, but it has no meaning to it. I plan on naming my first son after me with the middle name Kendrick, therefore adding meaning to both.

Kendrick,
Songs such as Keisha’s Song seem to come from your actual experiences. Is there anything you are doing or plan to do about teenage prostitution? As an artist you have a large influence over your community, maybe you could set up an organiAtion to provide an outlet for girls in Keisha’s situation?
Johnny T said this on October 27th, 2011 at 9:26 pm
In a time when Hip-hop has come to take on so many meanings, how would you define its impact on you, and what do you hope to accomplish with your music? Does it even matter?
also
In today’s market, when so many artists are cross-collaborating with folks from different genres, do you still think it’s important for hip-hop to have a particular sound? Or is hip-hop more than just a particular instrumentation?
Don. C. C. said this on October 27th, 2011 at 9:28 pm
I’d like to ask Kendrick if he believes another shift, or even evolution in consciousness is occurring in the human race, and if so, does he think Hip Hop, much like the hippie movement in it’s time or the beat movement, will play the role of a major catalyst or aide in the shift/evolution. That would be awesome.

Many great artists have a plan, but fail in their execution because their career moves too fast and they are unable to adapt to the changes they didn’t see coming. Tupacs whole thug life movement is a perfect example of this. As an emcee under the spotlight who is literally living his story, how do you manage to stay humble and at the same time prove a point and tell a story that reflects today as well as yesterday.

Your sound has made a very evident transition from the first EP to Section.80 but you’ve maintained the same delivery and same core as an artist. How have you managed to maintain relevance?
Also, “the hardest thing for me to do is get you to know me within 16 bars”.. you’ve said (and it shows) that Pac is one of your dominant influences. If you were on a track with him 20yrs ago now, what would you say in 16 bars?

I’ve heard you state that you don’t drink or smoke (or at least keep it to a minimal). Openly admitting this is not something that is done by a lot of hip-hop artists, in fact theres a few particularly incredible artists (Andre 3000 and J. Cole) that have connoted similar references in the past. Whats your reasoning for not taking part in these “activities”? Do you feel that they have become too highly promoted within mainstream hip-hop? Do you ever consider the influences your behaviors may have on younger fans?

Kendrick,
Rappers a lot of the time act as a birds-eye-view of there surroundings to the listener (usually urban areas/lifestyles/cultures). and more often then not, they tell a real story about killings, gang banging, drug dealing/using, etc. Unfortunately in popular music almost non of these artists explain to the general public WHY these horrible things are going on. and how society, education, etc., are directly effecting whole communities. You, like 2pac, have figured out a way to do both. Show the issue and show the cause.
what influenced you to be that type of person/writer/rapper?
why is it so difficult to make rap music that sounds good, gets spins, and has a message?
Do you feel that yourself and rappers like j. cole are making (in the least corny way possible) “conscious rap” cool?

That being said, it pains me when you write of changing the system, of standing up for yourself, your culture, and for all of humanity while using the same demeaning language most rappers use regarding women. “I call a bitch a bitch, a ho a ho, a woman a woman”, etc. Who are you, me, or anyone else to discern these differences? Do you think it’s fair to call for a change in the unjust American system while perpetuating sexism and gender stereotypes?

i been wondering for some time now, if I were kendrick himself, what would he wanna let the world know, or what he would ask himself if he were infact, not himself. ha. but really id say exactly that. . . if it were reversed and kendrick was still just as unknown as us asking the questions, what would he ask a rapper he looked up to at the time or wanted to know something of that. so i guess that would be it. . . and what was he thinkin after he bodied Charles Hamilton spotlight that night he was in the audience with Jay Rock n shit. hahaha

Where did you get your styles from? Did the LA underground influence you in anyway (i.e. project blowed, goodlife, freestyle fellowship, etc.)
