this is bullshit, i get where he’s coming from in the first part then he just goes overboard. dudes need to stop living in the past and complaining about how easy evolution has made things. Music knowledge is a must for a DJ, but who the fuck is premo to dictate what musicians people are influenced by? Hip hop has become so much more than just a dude spitting couplets over beat breaks. DJ Premier is a hip hop legend, but if his way of thinking when talking about the hip hop scene is the correct way to think, why the fucks he so mad for?

Yea, all these Primo interviews are just instructions on how to make the music that DJ Premier wants you to make. Real music comes from you, in whatever way you can create it, not from following some old douche’s rulebook. If he had any respect for music in general, he would stop sabotaging the art form just because he’s getting left behind.

Preemo isn’t the best producer in the game, and hasn’t been in years. His opinion is very valid, but every time his opinion drops, y’all don’t gotta post it. Cats like 40 and Lex Luger are coming through with incredible (modern) music, and their opinions don’t matter to the hip hop scene. Y’all it it fucked up
Brandon said this on October 20th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
So I’m supposed to go broke buying vinyls or be a wackass dj with no current records just because I want to be respected by Preemo in 2011. Fuck outta here!

I think you guys are taking his statement out of context. What he’s saying is that if you want to make hip hop, you should study the elements of where a lot of the current sound comes from. A lot of that music cannot be found in a digital format, it on archaic analog formats that unique in sound. If you think cats like Lex Luger haven’t in some way studied sound from analog sources, you’re sadly mistaken.
And people user Serato or Final Scratch or whatever else is available simple for the sake of convenience, not because of sound quality. You have a different appreciation for the art of DJing when you’ve done a party and had to carry out crates and calzones of records as opposed to carry a Jetson pack and wrapping up.

NO NO NO DJ Premier is not mad at anybody using some new technology and he’s not mad at people who dont know about music from the past BUT alot of people dont have the fundamentals down and thats why they can make records but they will never have a classic song for as long as they have a career. That goes for rappers and producers and djs that can only do one set every single night and have no soul in their shit at all. @livinginthepresent, you probably one of those people that was mad at the BET cyphers cause you dont know why Premo would use those beats but your wrong when you say hip hop has become much more then a rapper spitting couplets over beat breaks because if you strip away all that extra shit the same blueprint for hip hop is still there. You idiots mention Lex Luger in the same sentence as Premo are fucking crazy. He aint mad at any new cat coming in with some corny beats, fool Premo is one of the pioneers of beat making in hip hop. CMONSON give Lex a whole orchestra behind him making a beat and give Premo just 5 different sounds and he’ll make a better beat 9 times outta ten.

hes just saying be aware of where the dj culture comes from. and hip is losing its culture more and more everyday. i find it hard to tell the difference between hip hop beats and and radio shit these days because its getting meshed together to sound like the same shit. not tryin to hate on the new cats either just the direction the industry is taking it

idris said this on October 20th, 2011 at 8:28 pm
Times change and the ways artists manipulate the sound of music changes but the effect that music has on people does not change. Premo is saying understand everything about being a dj because its only gonna make you better as a dj.

You guys do realize Primo uses serato too, right? He’s not saying it’s bad, he’s saying you should have to earn it.
