David Banner at #OccupyWallStreet (Video)

Similar to Immortal Technique, Kanye West, Bun B and others alike, David Banner made an appearance at #OWS and shared some constructive criticism with MTV.

One of my only criticisms of hip-hop right now is that we all … have become so corporate that people don’t even feel like we’re a part of the people especially rappers and punk rockers. People always felt like we were them, we were their voice. We’re still at war, we’re in a recession, where’s that in the music? I don’t hear that in the music.

  1. Follow the Occupy Hip-Hop movement, led by new and old school pioneers such as Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, Lecrae, and Nitty Scott, MC (this list is by no means “all-inclusive”). There is a general consensus of the people supporting not only true representation of the world that we live in, but solutions.

We have grown fatigued by entertainers and rappers, who exist among the “1%”, throwing their unattainable wealth in the faces of their listeners. We are tired of being mocked by the money they boast of and blow, yet, with the exception of very few, don’t give back to the community. We are disgusted with the lack of maturity, skill, and respect in the craft of hip-hop, and we will no longer watch apathetically, inactively watching our culture’s degradation and death.

Join the Occupy Hip-Hop movement and boycott the purchases of ignorant art. Support those artists who do carry our voices. And educate yourself on discerning who is who.

  2. Banner is one of the smartest dudes in the game.

  3. if hes questions where the voice is, hes not listening. deap prez been talking about issues for the longest. i get its not mainstream, but for him to not acknowledge that music is there, is kinda irresponsible…

WHERE IS CHUCK D AND PROFESSOR GRIFF???

  4. ^^^but if u were to look at the most popular publications magazines/radio/tv of “hiphop” they are not supporting the “dead prezes” of hiphop….

  5. he’s a hypocrite, making songs about pimping, swag, hoes, guns and sipping syrup. One album with 9th Wonder does not make him a conscious rapper. This guy is a clown with his non-prescription Raybans trying to look intelligent when all he has to do is lead by example instead of issuing pseudo-intellectual statements to the press for attention for his new album. clown shit for real

  6. i feel what you’re saying, but hes not saying that…

“We’re still at war, we’re in a recession, where’s that in the music? I don’t hear that in the music.”

make your statement clear(Banner that is). Call out who you gonna call out, but dont act like NOBODY is speaking up or there isnt a voice in hiphop. I guess its good to see some of them supporting this, i just hope its not all for show

  7. Crossing Ye’s name out =FAIL. So many people love to play politics from the side line, not knowing that its a contact sport. If you feel a way about Kanye being there, so so openly, or say nothing about it at all.

  8. Wow mad respect to Banner. Dude seriously has changed and he’s completely right. Majority of rappers don’t represent the people with their glorification of materialism and money. They promote “self” rather than social change or love for your neighbor. It’s flat out destructive, NOT what this art form is about and might as well be considered satanism ESPECIALLY in these times we live in. The genre is disgustingly polluted which is why I simply don’t relate or identify w/ most rappers. I’ve become very critical of my Hip Hop because of this and pay close attention to the overall message conveyed in each song.

@EricDean Nice, I’m totally with that but I’m sure many such as myself have been doing what you’re proposing: not listening to the radio, not buying tarnishing mainstream albums only true representative ones and attending shows of those true representatives. But I’m prepared to make it viral if that’s what you’re suggesting. We’re purifying the Government from these greedy corporatists so why not Hip Hop.

@capt’n backslap I’m sure he’s more than aware of the real Hip Hop in circulation which is why I think he’s referring to the mainstream only. Like @Billy said the likes of Dead Prez just arn’t being circulated. If only the masses would listen to Dead Man’s Shoes. We need more emcees like Reks, Black Star, Blu, Chace Infinite, Coss, KRS, Rakaa, J Live, OC, Public Enemy etc. Now that’s what I call Hip Hop.

Have ya’ll heard of the duo Malcolm & Martin backed by DJ Rev? Can’t get more Hip Hop than them.

Tomorrow ya’ll. Be part of the largest demonstration ever in Occupy The World/World Revolution Oct. 15 ’11. Just don’t forget why you’re there; to END THE FED!

  10. He has SUCH a valid point. SUCH.

  11. How the fuck is he gonna say BIG BOI apropos support for Troy Davis, R.I.P., and NOT FIRST mention KILLER MIKE!? Mike’s speech at that rally will forever be one of the greatest speeches EVER given in the HISTORY of the United States of AMERICA!

Now, as for those CLUELESS fucks who think the album with 9th wonder was Banner’s first stab at “conscious rap” (wtf is “conscious rap”?), you are, AGAIN, CLUELESS! Bannaer has ALWAYS, from day 1, spit “conscious”.

  12. #OccupySesameStreet

  13. Sorry David Banner but technically were not in a recession.

  14. Shake there are a lot of dope people with substance, maybe if you post some of their stuff others will know as well. Feed the people, stop playin’ tho.

  15. great, millionaires that go down to sympathize with the “99 percent” who need someone to blame but aren’t intelligent enough to come up with cogent arguments or ideas. typically times are tough so everyone needs someone to point their fingers at; now we have millionaires going to the OWS bullshit to also blame bankers/wallstreet for every problem in the world. fucking shameful.

  16. David Banner tried to take my girl when he visited my college.Dude don’t know no betta
