After leaving the taping of the Cyphers for this year’s BET Awards, the big homie Skillz had a few choice words about what he witnessed. Claiming he “never thought it was possible to lose that much respect for that many rappers in one day”.
When asked exactly why he lost respect for some of his counterparts on this particular day, he replies, “Because none of them came there prepared.”
“Well, I can’t say none of them, but a lot of them didn’t! he says, choosing his words with more intention. “Watching some of that sh*t was sad. I watched two particular rappers who are all over the blogs, mixtapes, radio, and magazines stop and start their verses over 64 times!! 64!! I stood there and counted, yo! Between the two of them, they started over 64 times!! We talking 16 bars, yo! And I don’t mean they messed up at the 14th bar and started over. You f*cked up at bar three! I mean, damn, did you write the verse??? Watching that sh*t was sad, ‘cuz let the web tell it, you’re the new hot kid on the block. But, what I saw didn’t represent that at all. I don’t know. I expected more, I guess. Like, know your verse. Come prepared. I felt bad for DJ Premier. He had to sit there through that and remain professional,” he recalls.
Interesting (and sadly somewhat expected?). During his convo with AllHipHop, Skillz continues on about today’s generation of hip hop, blogs, being honest with your music and his future in the game. All of which can be read here.
Interviews

we already know Meek Mill and Jay Rock did it fuggin a
rick ross too probably
He prolly talking about dom kennedy cuz thats the cypher that he had with him…
and its prolly ya favorite rappers most of these new rappers are bad maybe 3 good ones.
he prolly talking about dom kennedy…thats the cypher that he had with them…
@immagoholdmybasketball it wasnt meek mill because they recorded there cyphers at differnt times you have to look at the people skillz is in the cypher wit i heard the only people who killed it was shady 2.0 and meek mill actually from people who went to the awards
Translation: One gased himself up and forgot for a seconded that he’s not skilled enough to come of the top…the other was catching too much feedback in his earpiece, and couldn’t hear his ghost writer …
Probably nervous as fuck though. I can understand it to a degree.
If you’re an established MC, you shouldn’t really be nervous. IE: Jay, Em, most of the top rappers.
But if you’re still undergrounds and whatnot, It’s excusable.
Naw I don’t think it’s excusable at all. You’re an MC. They don’t chose underground rappers for this. They chose mainstream, or well known independent artist. They don’t chose hardcore underground cats. And even if they did most of the cats in the underground have been doin’ they thing for over a decade.
Bottom line: If you can’t handle pressure like that, or you get nervous, or whatever the case may be. You really shouldn’t be in the game to begin with.
I wanna know specifically who he’s talking about…or where can I find a video?
^No it’s not excusable. How the hell you plan on being an MC and you can’t rhyme 16 bars straight? And it’s not like any of these rappers are 12 years old. Most are 20+. So you would think they didn’t start rhyming yesterday.
Who’s he specifically talkin bout??
SHHO did an event with him recently in Richmond and he talked about this…basically he hinted at Ross…and he wouldnt tell us who else…but as a whole he said he was blown from the experience…
He said Meek Mill killed it though (one take)…he said the Shady joint was toughest joint…..
They must of wrote the verses the day of the recording cause artists dont even be that bad at concerts, they have time to memorize it..still gotta be prepared
does it really matter aslong as we hear the finished product? Much love for Skillz for voicing his opinion but when the Cyphers are really shown to the national audience ppl dont care that they messed it up 64 times! Kinda like during movies we ALL watch they dont just shoot one scene perfect and dip but i kno what Skillz is saying. I guess its one of those if you wasnt there you wouldnt notice kinda things.(obviously) It would be super funny if they put out a outtakes dvd of the mess ups tho!
Now messing up two or three times is cool but comeonson when you a professional MC and you messing up more then ten times at just saying 16 bars? Thats an embarrassment to the art of rapping and the culture. Keep it real
yo, real shit, i respect Skillz even more for speaking on this. if i was him or one of the other rappers who wasn’t fucking up, i woulda said something to them after a while. like, are you fucking serious? a lot of new cats nowadays don’t even have the fundamentals down and they’re getting buzz like crazy. shit is sad when a bunch of rappers can come up in the game without having the main essential element down: mc-ing. this shit is sad really. how you gonna come up in an industry and not master your own craft? the game is being flooded by a bunch of phonies atm.
Skills isn’t even good, so why is he talking?
@crackadon 100% agree. if theres one thing an MC should be able to do… is MC!! sorry kids if thats too much to ask.
He probably talking about Wale
Big enough to speak on please be big enough to drop the artists name…
If he’s that upset about it, then he should call cats out by name…
1. I can understand his anger, but if your gonna be man enough to call somebody out, at least say their name.
2. Who cares that they messed 60-sumthin times? all that matters is the end result.
Yeah, I’m interested in who done it but even then I’ll excuse it if they drop hot songs like Ross does.
It’s painstakingly obvious who he’s talking about: NITTY SCOTT.
i say Wale did that shit cause i see him doing that shit alll time and XV
They probably weren’t lettin niggas read their blackberries.
i lost so much respect for skillz’ hairline
Say names, don’t just say “i’m disappointed in Rapper A & Rapper B”…
def not meek mill thats where meek mill got his name from rapping in cyphers in front of cameras on the corner i doubt he had any trouble with this 95% of his videos on youtube are of him spitting on camera in cyphers and stuff,
he talking about dom kennedy and rick ross i was there
thats mainstream rappers for you ! sklls im glad u witness that and know ow fake this mainstream rappers are i caht wait to c the cypher and c who he was talking about
I don’t think it was Wale, he’s good off top. & I’ve seen Dom Kennedy live, & if anybody’s confident as an MC, it’s Dom. It was probably Joe buddens. Meek, like em or not, used to freestyle in his home city back in the day & win battles so it probably wasn’t him either.
skillz has a point but these guys are on a bigger spotlight and i understand their giddiness to the point where they choke a little…cmon tho dude’s only looked at for “year rap ups”.
I bet one of them was Joe Budden
How could it be Joey if Skillz was nowhere in that vacinity? FOH
skillz needs to go stfu n start writing his 2011 end of the year rap up that nobody ever listens to. thats why his ass was playin the backround spittin 0 barz.
^^Whatever… hater.
There is a part of me that thinks it’s important and kind of messed up that dudes had to keep spitting their verses but at the same time the whole cypher thing is fake anyway. Any cypher that is done with the intent of broadcasting on BET is inherently flawed. So the only thing that matters is the end product. Skillz is a coming off as a bitter OG, who thinks the rules are the same as when he entered the game. The OGs constantly talk about what they had to do get put on and say things like “the cypher was a rite of passage.” Well, guess what bruh the game has changed and I’m quite certain that every generation believes it’s easier for the new generation than it was for them. The Cold Crush would sure as hell say that Skillz and dudes from his early to mid-1990s generation didn’t have to pay the same dues as them. He can complain or acknowledge the game for what it is right now. Adapt or Die!!!!
^But what part of the game, old or new, involves the failure to spit your own lines? I mean, no matter what changes, that shit is gonna be kinda important if you’re a rapper.
fuckin skillz don´t give us names, bla bla bla….skillz has no sklizz. riffo rakas
@truthBetold
Skillz was actually in the cypher…..
Honestly, who cares how long it takes you to spit your bars? It’s all about the finished product. It doesn’t make you a better rapper if you can rap without mistake just like it doesn’t make you a better rapper if you can go off the top.
@T
Would you want to go to a show if the rapper had to keep restarting in order to get it right?
@T
You’re probably one of these wack-rappers?
@T rapping without mistakes absolutely makes you a better rapper. I mean, rapping is what Rappers do.
BTW, it’s a crime that Skyzoo ain’t in this
a lot of yall are lames saying skillz don’t have skills don’t u kno skillz is one of the biggest ghostwriter in hiphop…an don’t yall kno wut a m.c. is a mic phone controler!!! niggs is suppose to be able to handle that shit!

Skills is talking the truth. I’m not saying he’s the most relevant but I’m sick of hearing people like Wacka Flocka say in interviews “oh I just started rapping 2 years ago” it’s like c’mon you’re not even qualified to hold that job position to be on TV and be called a rapper/emcee.
He can’t name names because of the politics involved. Don’t be silly folks. He needs to earn a living too.
while all of you ppl are talking about he should name drop i hope you know alot of times you cant talk about what happens behind scenes because they have you sign a contract so most of the time you can only hint at whats going on
@Shang P. MC means master of ceremony…
who ever said Joe Budden is retarded… 1. he wasnt even in the same cypher as skills, more like he was in a cypher with a handful hip-hops best right now like Eminem, Royce da 59, Crooked I and Joell ortiz…… 2. Joe Budden has been in the cypher before.. 3. Joe Budden has very good rep with real Emcees dumbasses
Hmmmm I been done on the freestyle tip… 95% of these cats who are super popular who “freestyle” on the radio all these other places spit WRITTEN bars. SOmetimes you’ll here those same bars on their CD. It’s an embarrassment of the craft. But the radio don’t call them out b-cuz of sponsorship & airplays. For example, NOBODY but Corey Gunz, Jae Millz & occasionally Weezy can freestyle at YM. I don’t think you should even be considered in the top 5-7 if you can’t!!! WTF… at least write & memorize some shiii & never recycle it. Trick me at least! These cats are shams!
BTW… I doubt seriously if it was Joe Budden….

Who is this news to? No one goes off the dome anymore, but if these dudes were fucking up on some written shit… that’s shameful… you can’t practice that shit!?
How great would it be to construct a fucken cypher with underground masters.
1. Qwel
2. Immortal Technique
3. Eyedea
4. Binary Star
5. Evidence
Straight Hip Hop Cypher Shit!
^ Eyedea died though.
a freestyle does not mean pre written…it means “never been recorded”…and I think dude who said if you can’t freestyle you can’t be top 5 is totally off the mark…top 5 pertains to the greatest emcees, and I’ll be damned if you can’t qualify based on some trivial freestyles…NONE of the legendary artist are revered for freestyles, they are revered for making legendary RECORDS..I don’t give a shit about some off the dome raps, if your records are groundbreaking thats enough for me, and most fans…
and lol at telling us these cats are spitting writtens as if the masses don’t know that already, how old are you? 16? you act like hiphop began when you were born, lol…Ur preaching but you don’t know the technical definition of a “freestyle”…who cares if weezy or drake or jcole can freestyle? like really, its about the quality of their music, not how dope they are at composing some rhymes on the spot, huh? that’s your criteria for buying records? if thats the case I assume Mistah FAB is one of your favorite emcees because that wack ass clown is great at what you call a “freestyle”….POINT MADE.
Ross did his in one take. It was Wale, Pill, and Krit who kept fuckin up. I have seen the IT’S footage.
^ You’re lying. You didn’t see shit.
Skillz has been known to hint at rappers doing some shit but not saying their names. Ya’ll don’t remember “Ghostwriter”?
skillz verse was corny as fuck! prolly one of the corniest i heard in the cyphers. maybe he shoulda took more time on his. all of his lines were about how hot his cypher verse would be but he never actually said anything. fuckin wack niggas…. he makes one song a year that no one listens to.
by looking at the footage, the cats I feel he was talking about were Tyga, Kendrick, MGK, and Dom Kennedy mostly. Those four looked like they were stumbling the most and would have required a few takes. And if anyone messed up from being gassed up, then all eyes are definitely on MMG. Hated their cypher. They made it the most obvious that theirs were written and Meek Mills pulling Memphis Bleek duty, smh
