Cole said once that he was worried people would like some of his mixtapes more than his album. He done worried right. He’s got a lot of super fans and so the album will do alright, but for the most part, he done fell, maybe not off, but he fell without a doubt. Lil man gotta find out who he is and just be that. Cole is OBVIOUSLY a real down to earth and cool dude, but he is trying to be soooo hard over some of these tracks and, sorry, but I (and probably we) don’t believe you. I hope he doesn’t try so hard the next time around and maybe just let what’s natural be the product.

yea the album sounds like a mixtape because his mixtapes sound like albums. why can’t people wrap their heads around that? narrowminded people we deal with. shit if he put cole world out at the time of the the warm up people would be going crazy like they did for the warm up. how is he trying to be hard? if he wasnt “trying” to be hard then people would be critizing him for being soft. haters are such nitpickers when it comes to j cole. “theres no flow to the album” for example (not saying i agree with this just making a point) is about the 8th most important quality an album should offer. yet the haters (realist only to themselves) disect this about the album. stick to whats most important and it might shed some life.
Cole did not fall-off but he did compromise his sound and voice for a more marketable persona.
I agree that he is trying to hard please everyone, and will unfortunately please few and far between. The label and industry may love it but will Cole’s core purists love it–nah.
But you cannot have your cake and eat it too, unless you are a game-changer. And Cole is not that because he fails to innovate the game. He sounds like a cool replica of that 90s sound we heard before, aside from that Mr. Nice Watch track that sounds like Cole’s attempt to jump hard on the rap’s musical shift toward dubstep influenced tracks.
In short, Cole’s next hurdle is to maintain authenticity of who he was without losing those diverse fans that he has gained. And therein lies the make or break of Cole’s mainstream career.
And only he can determine what is a success or failure. Not us. Because at the end of the day, numbers will be forgotten and iconic songs will remain. For example, no one knows how much Illmatic and Miseducation sold… but they are universal looked at as classics.
His album was amazing.

I was there last night. Cole killed it!! Some dude up at the from had an official hard copy of his CD with the receipt and everything haha and Cole was like wtf, let me see that, he took it from him, looked at it and opened it up, and it was the real thing, he looked mad confused and was lime how the hell you get this??? I dont even have thus yet hahaha, it was a funny moment. Real humble dude.

Being a fan doesn’t mean NOT calling out when they do something wack. Half the reason some of his fans are fickle is because they will follow anything Jay-Z cosigns. The pop market is also not dedicated. The album is not a classic, by any stretch of the imagination.

Anybody who calls any album a “classic” upon release is foolish. Personally I wait 5 years before calling any album a classic, and even then I wouldn’t. Cole World is a great, great album, besides I highly doubt ANY artist’s (studio) debut will be dubbed a classic any time soon. Now a debut MIXTAPE though? That’s a whole different thing, because it’s with a debut mixtape that you first get your impression about an artist nowadays, not an album. If The Warm Up was an album, THAT would be a classic, because that is the first time most people heard J. Cole’s music. There will never be an Illmatic quality album from Nas, and there will never be a Warm Up quality body of work from Cole, because you can’t have another first impression again. But enjoy Cole World for what it is, and move the FUCK on!
