Common: Classic Albums By Classic Artists (Video)

Be has to be Common’s last classic album (Finding Forever a close second). In this clip he explains what it was like to live alongside J Dilla at the time that he recorded the album, and he tells a story of a drunk Kanye West taking a 30 minute nap and woke up to make “The Corner” beat.

  1. Like Water for Chocolate and Resurrection r my favorite common albums

  2. finding forever was a classic too to me…i dont know wat more ppl wanted really..
    start the show
    the people
    southside
    the game
    so far to go
    break my heard
    misunderstood
    forever begins.

    YEP THATS A CLASSIC.

  3. BE >>>>>>

  4. i second dedxsad. i guess i missed the memo that be is a “classic.” resurrection has aged well

  5. Be is a classic. So is Like Water for Chocolate. Problem is it’s the Kanye and Common combo of Be that garners it more acclaim. Few Rap albums have legit beats and raps.

And yes Be was a great concept album on the level of Illmatic and Miseducation. Ask Ms. Hill and Nas, if you think different.

  6. right on, i guess the music snob in me is prejudice against an artist’s newer stuff. but yeah i agree, and combo of great raps and great beats over the course of an entire album is sadly few and far between

  7. Man where has TRUE hip hop gone, this right here brings back great memories..man I miss those days

  8. Like Water for Chocolate is not a classic. One Day It’ll All Make Sense is better.

  9. I picked this album up when I was 14, always considered a classic. Love it to this day. Thank you Common.

  10. nigga needs to shave his beard.

  11. To me, Be is the last CLASSIC hip hop album made. Crazy to think it’s been six years. Obviously, there’s been a lot of albums I’ve really enjoyed since then, but I can’t think of one I consider to be better than Be.

  12. Fuck whoever thumbed this down. Seriously.

  13. I just loved then No ID/Common combo in Resurrection and the Dilla/Common combo in Like Water for Chocolate. I love all of Com’s albums though (besides Universal Mind Control)(Yes I even liked Electric Circus)

  14. Ressurection was excellent, but i dunno if it was classic. Like Water For Chocolate on the other hand is a certified classic. Be is a definite classic as well, but Like Water For Chocolate was masterful. if he dropped BE-THEN water for chocolate that shit would still stand the test of time, and be better than BE.

  15. i can honestly say be got me into hip hop such a classic album

  16. Take the lyrics off Electric Circus and put them over the beats from Finding Forever = Classic.

  17. I’m glad this dude finally got with a team in g.o.o.d music because now he has the best of both worlds in underground and commercial success.

  18. I’ve always loved this album! and still does, cause it’s a classic to me! .. then now to get these stories behind the tracks, its unbelievable

  19. @Dorian I know. That nigga looked way better when he was shaped up; Huh?

  20. HE IS ROCKING THAT BEARD FOR A NEW TV SHOW THAT HE’S IN. LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE IS A BETTER CLASSIC TO ME.

  21. @Yup. I respect your opinion but there were at least a hand full of classic albs release in between then and now. I wont take shine from BE by stating them.. but there were classics made.

  22. I still listen to Be & Finding Forever on a regular basis & both are classics in my eyes. The intro on be is probably my fav. intro of all time.

  23. the album was mostly produced by Ye and he did damn good work but I personally think that Dilla made the best beats on the album: Love Is and It’s Your World

  24. Be is one of the best albums ever. ya, i went there :P

  25. I hate when people say Kanye sucks just because he’s the most mainstream out of all the great producers. No one can deny this guy’s talent, and Common’s story just confirms that.
