With 436k copies sold, Jay-Z and Kanye West throw yet another #1 album under their belt. While there wasn’t any doubt that they would do it, I figured they would sell more units in the first week. Then again, selling 321k digital sales (290k on iTunes alone, breaking Coldplay’s previous record) might have hurt overall sales as retailers only had two days (as far as SoundScan tracking goes) to sell anything. I’m curious to see what the two push this week.

What does the Carter albums have to do with WTT? Wayne put out more then 20 mixtapes ( no really , 20 tapes ) before C3 so it sold a million in one week. If you think people werent downloading WTT the very first minute it was available your tripping. Even if WTT sold one copy I would still like the album anyway.

the album packaging (a lost art) really disapointed me tbh. yeah it was different, but different isnt ALWAYS good. anyways solid album. I’d give it 7.5/10

For the people saying record sales don’t determine an album’s level of greatness — I agree for the most part. BUT the reason people bring sales up is because Ye and Jay do. They talk about making people “tuck their whole summer in” etc… And after dropping lines like that you’d expect them to back it up, considering their status in the game AND the fact that it didn’t leak. So while numbers may not be a factor towards your opinion, that’s what the rappers pay attention to. It’s their “stats”, if you will. So it will be a slap in the face to Ye and Jay when C4 (most likely) outsells them. Or a Weezy/Drizzy collab album, which would — let’s be honest — most likely sell more as well. Again, not saying that automatically makes an album better, just food for thought.
I take the “great sales doesn’t mean a great album” like I take the “just cause a ball player can score doesn’t mean he’s a great player.” True, while it doesn’t mean he can pass and his defensive game might be weak, he can still fucking outscore you the whole game.
Distant Relatives is infinitely better than Watch the Throne.

Album sales matter somewhat. It’s just so hard to gauge now with album leaks and the internet. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was basically a classic album according to any review, blog comment or hip hop fan you talk to and was outsold by Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. I can’t see anyone trying to argue Pink Friday was even in the same league as MBDTF.
As for C4 selling 2 million it’s first week….keep dreaming. The tracklist looks VERY weak if you are an avid hip hop fan and Lil Wayne doesn’t have the same buzz going that he did back in 2007. Not to mention C3 sold about 1 million its opening week, so how would it even be possible for C4 to do 2 million? Lets not forget Wayne also dropped an album a year back on iTunes first that didn’t sell nearly 300,000 copies in 2 days. And has basically failed to produce a hit single yet for C4 which was a HUGE reason C3 sold as well as it did.

I doubt C4 will go platinum the first three months. Because, being realistic, both of Wayne’s last two albums and the Young Money collab album only went Gold…which is pretty much a commercial flop. He may be able to pull a mill out of his ass, but I really doubt it.

Jay headlines his tours and even headlines other tours that dont even cater to hip hop. Wayne tours with multiple artists and labels so the fans that show up are a combination of many different fans. Thats the same with Jayz but when you buy tickets to his concerts hes the headline even on tours and shows that are not put together by him , no matter what the genre of music anywhere on the planet. In other countries the legends of other genres of music open up for Jay and even here in the states you mite see the Rolling Stones come out before Jay does. So I dont think people fully understand the level WTT is on. Wayne may have had the highest grossing tour ( in the states that particular year ) but Jay been doing this since the No Way Out tour with Puffy and the Hard Knock Life Tour and those were two of the highest grossing tours ever. Not too many rappers can come off the same stage as Madonna in another country then fly home and bring out Michael Jackson at Summer jam then almost ten years later be having Beyonce fans knowing the lyrics to 99 problems.
