  1. maybe in the same sense that lupe wass circa 2006

  2. was*

  3. i hope not, cant stand his fans as it is.

  4. I read both articles last night and I’m on the fence. Will becoming a mainstream star make this dude water down his lyrics? Jay seems more concerned w/his own career than his roster. BP3 / WTT came and Cole is re-releasing songs that could’ve been an album itself.

  5. J.cole’s fan base is made up of Jay Electronica’s old fan base, they realised that their original idol wasn’t going to release shit.

  6. listen who cares…
if he makes music you think is great
    go support him.

  7. He is the new Papoose. A million fucking mixtapes, no fucking album.

  8. ^^^negative…pap signed with busta which is career suicide as all hip-hop fans should know…j. cole will be fine…rather him be true to himself and drop good material

  9. please no….for the love of HIPHOP……

  10. @Grimzz – How many RocNation artist are poppin?

  11. Did Jay-Z? No, he’s plankin on a million and still gives a fuck.

    End of discussion.

  12. this nigga can’t even put out a half decent single, let alone it took this nigga four years to drop an album.

    A. HOLE YOU PAPOOSED YOURSELF!!!©

  13. It took Wiz Khalifa 5 years to drop his major label debut. Why don’t I ever hear niggas bitching about that?

  14. ^^^^ Thank you… ^^^^

  15. He would if he was any good. Cole’s too boring for the mainstream. If his shit comes on the radio, people are switchin the dial.

  16. Hell no he havening a terrible start honestly the next big hiphop star is meek mill honestly dude has a smash single out and it was a mixtape song that ima boss is in ever club every radio station as for j.cole nigga is to boring everyone that will ever be a j.cile fans are already his fans i can see him having a lupe career respected but not much success or maybe a styles p not as legendary but 1 or to smash singles j.cole needs to just hop on a 40 beat but drake on the hook and he can keep it lyrical and it will be a smash but no way will he ever be a start like i said dudes like meek mill are surpasing this nigga in gaining fans and meek came from the very bottom!

  17. It’s been 2 years. Jay has said he wants to build artists. Remember when Dondria was shook on 106? She wasn’t ready for prime time yet. You send the kids on tour while they are working on material. They get used to the business, the schedule, become more diverse creatively and become better performers. I’m glad they didn’t rush him out half baked and virtually guarantee that he bricks.

The only Roc Nation to complete a project is Alexis Jordan and her album was only released internationally the way they do pop stars to get them seasoned before bringing them stateside.

I think Cole’s production has improved greatly as shown by some of the beats he’s given away. Musically he’s still trying to find a mainstream voice to be bigger than a backpack rapper. I dig the introspective Lights Please type records and the Grown Simba attack records but can he do a party record? The Trey Songz record says just maybe. So we’ll see. Otherwise he can still have a good career bubbling under the surface or he’ll get hungry like Wale and go that extra mile to turn the corner.

  18. fuck no never and this is comeing from a j.cole stans dudes career is not even looking good

  19. Everyone saying no is going to sound stupid in a few months. His Mixtapes could pass for albums. He is doing the smart thing with AnyGivenSunday building hype for ColeWorld just like Kanye w/G.o.o.d friday’s. I’m not worried about him blowing up. I’m worried about him changing for the game.

  20. yall niggas sayin his boring ..what thefuck lmfao??? go listen to the come up, the warm up, FNL…nigga you dont know what you missin out on..closet thing to pac we have atm…hes a legend in the making he just needs the right trac..hes gettin overseas fans aswell now that he been touring with drake and rihanna..his time will come whether itll be on the first second or third album..pac didit blow up big til his 4th album..so niggaz need to chill..this dude is a star in the making and he knows it aswell..

  21. nah..drake got lightskin rappers on lock sorry cole

  22. Hit or Miss ? I gotta say J Cole have miss a lot. Im more concern about his fan base worldwide beside us on the internet. J cole should of did more features on other artists hit records instead of just producing for them. I also felt like he should took advantage of with Migual – All I want is you , Drake – In The Morning and Dirty Money – Im Coming Home. I really think this man need help because no one cant do it on their own and it sad because Jay Z is too Concern with his own career and Kanye.

  23. Why is everyone hating? Did you read the articles or see the poll. Prolly not cuz all you C-sec dumbasses read is your own post. For those of you who don’t know how links work. 50% voted star 43% voted idk and a mere 7% voted no.

  24. *Shrugs* I don’t think it matters, Cole has true fans, and haters that follow him and listen to the music anyway. He’ll be successful whether or not he’s on Drake’s mainstream level.

  25. i mean i have hope but i hope hes not too mainstream. people talk about drake being too maninstrem but hes really not, not like wiz, or rick ross or wayne, its been 3 years and people still say drake is that nigga. if j.cole does blow up he has to not release songs like work out and disgusting. i think jcole needs to find his sound and perfect it or try to, like what drake has done with so far gone, thank me later. artist grows so j cole will blow up, maybe september 27, or maybe next summer. it will happen soon.

  26. Drake had been making music for awhile before he blew. 3 mixtapes. J. Cole has ummm…. 3 mixtapes lol. Drake started in ’06 didn’t get an album out til ’10. Wiz took awhile too. And Deal or No Deal flopped. So time isn’t a factor… All Cole needs to do is learn how to make a legitimate radio single and he’ll be fine… Ask Wiz…

  27. I think we must determine what is success. Is success crossover appeal, instant stardom or a classic/great album ? In terms of Crossover appeal Cole has it. I know dimes and party girls that listen to his music- mostly the warm up and the come up as well as his new singles. Cole isn’t any instant star but with the exception of someone coming from the disney machine i.e Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, instant stars are few. Also instant stars burn out quickly. J Cole has maintained and increased his relevance since his roc nation signing. Personally, I don’t care about singles, I support artist that make good music. I only care about singles because a hit single can project a good artist into stardom which means more creative control and success for the artist. I don’t want J.cole to make party music. I expect lyricism from him and he hasn’t failed me yet. I think J.cole will have a Common esque career always respected but always underrated by the mainstream. Common’s debut is far from a classic but he found himself and grew with his subsequent releases. Common is a chicago pioneer and Hip hop legend. Longevity Over Fades people.

  28. you realize every rapper wants mainstream likw the hell would you want if you were up and coming hell fuck yea you want your shit to sell and be known internationally worldwide with hit records

  29. I dont know why you would ask if Cole is gonna be a mainstream star? When he’s been mainstream for almost 2 years now. Anyway I just dont see it in him cause I first seen Cole on TV in 09 and its now 2011 and his album is coming out next to way too much firepower for his skill level to handle.

  30. He’s just one famous feature from achieving mainstream stardom, “Can’t Get Enough” might be the song to do that, he would of probably already hit mainstream stardom if he had chosen “In the Morning” as his single.

  31. Why does everyone act like “In The Morning” has the ability to make it past American public radio censorship? “Every Girl” didn’t even work out that well because of it.

  32. The argument of no was ridiculous. Talking about will his name be household in America? Comparing his Jay Eminem and Beyonce? My parents know those names, but they might not know Nas. I’d have to ask. My point is he has the POTENTIAL to be that big and the fact we’re debating it proves it.

Cole can be just as big a name as Common, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Drake, T.I., Ludacris, Lil Wayne, etc.

Jay, Kanye and Em, Snoop are icons. Not really a fair to compare him to them. And even still….we are.

  33. And he doesnt even have a debut album out!!!

I think by the time its all said and done he’ll be regarded as one of the best of his time.

  34. @$$$
rewording the lyrics wont be that hard and the point is that it will expand his fan base to more Drake fans, and we know he has a pretty big fan base.

  35. Okay, I agree with that somewhat.

  36. THIS NIGGA IS NT GONNA BECOME A “STAR” STAR.HES GONNA DROP A WACK DEBUT ALBULM,WITH BEATS THAT ONLY WACK NIGGAS LIKE(NO KNOCK,NO BASS).HE MIGHT DO WIZ KHALIFA NUMBERS ONLY BECAUSE OF JAY Z BACKING.AND BY THE SOUNDS OF THIS WACK ALBUM HIM AND YEEZY GOT OUT,HE MIGHT WANT TO ADD A DOZEN FEATURES.IM NOT HATER,I JUST DONT SEE THE BIG DEAL.I HEARD HIS MUSIC,AND ITS LIKE,SO WHAT?

  37. Yes, because he sucks ass. So people buy into his bullshit. He isn’t REAL conscious rap like his fans state

  38. What kind of question is this? LOL of course he will. I’m not even a big fan and I know that. That is, if he really wants to. Lupe always knew what to do for mainstream success, he just never did it.

  39. Well, I’ve always seen him in the same stature as Big Sean, not saying Big Sean is a better rapper because I think Cole is but they’ve have, had and gotten the same amount of buzz going for them. Now we’ve seen Big Sean and in terms of rappers I’d put in this list, Wale, crossover and have singles on the Billboard charts… but would you consider them mainstream stars?

I’d so no and I find Cole in that category with the exception that he gets one of the Lupe breaks which is, either he sneaks a top 10 single on to a solid album as Lupe did with Superstar on The Cool or he completely goes pop with his album and gets a top 10 single like Lupe did with The Show Goes On on his Lasers album… haha had to sneak a Lupe diss here!

  40. ANYONE who says he won’t be the next star has listened to Work Out and nothing else. Work Out… not my favorite but if you heard the Come Up and the Warm Up and even FNL, they ALL had album quality and if he would’ve put the top songs all together into one album, that could have easily been an amazing debut but he wanted to take his time. I guess you will all see…

  41. One more thing, you cannot blame him for putting out Work Out to try and test the mainstream market. It debuted at 85 on the overall charts which means he must be doing something right for the general public. Black and Yellow didn’t even do that well on its debut.

  42. I don’t care if he’s mainstream or not as long as he puts out music

  43. I agree with Billy. If you like his music then support it & listen to it. Quit fucking worrying if he’s going to become mainstream or stay underground. Ya’ll are makin it too complicated on EVERYBODY.

  44. Like someone else mentioned… I think he may get Lupe status… Comes out firing but may not hold onto it for that long. I like the dude though… I think he’s got some solid tracks.
