Kendrick Lamar Speaks Section.80, Dr. Dre & More

Sitting down with Complex, K-Dot opens up about Dr. Dre, Skateboard P, weed and more.

Kendrick: One of my biggest things that I didn’t want to do for “HiiiPoWeR” was just make it a race thing. I wanted to make it for a bigger goal in mind and that’s to stand above all the bullshit, that’s what those people did. So when I say “HiiiPoWeR,” I’m representing everybody that’s trying to escape the negatives in the world and do something positive with their life and stand for something bigger that’s going to live forever, just like they people did.

Ab-Soul: I’ll tell you something else about that record too. Originally it was called “Black HiiiPoWeR.” But we were like, we don’t like that attitude of HiiiPoWeR. It’s got to be larger.

  3. They’ve definitely got the right idea by including everybody. A fan is a fan no matter what race they are. If they connect with your music then that’s the goal. The more the merrier.

  4. ya im puerto rican and i wouldnt feel as connected if they ended up calling it black hiipower

  6. Meka & Shake- Seriously, as many times as you guys have especially put focus on Kendrick Lamar, I don’t think you or any other blogger can further claim to NOT have a hand in making certain emcees famous. You know the amount of eyes on this site, and it seems like everyday there’s at least 2 Kendrick posts. Dude is no doubt talented, but again, you guys have helped and are helping his fame. So from now on, please don’t claim you have no hand in someone’s fame. Because you do. Yes talent can get them on the stage, but you are putting the extra spotlight on them, and that matters.

  7. Good decision, Black Hiiipower as a title would not have worked, especially for a single, (unless your Dead Prez). He still gets his point across in the lyrics.

I’m GLAD 2dopeboyz is promoting Kendrick (whether they admit it or not).

Section 80 = Album of the Year so far IMO. The replay value of this lp is incredible.

  8. Kendrick Lamar dresses like my Grandpa, that album is nice tho. One of the best of the year.

  9. black hiipower? damn.. sucks they even considered that honestly
    hate all that race bullshit
aside from the fact that wouldnt attract fans… thats just lame and shallow
peace and love to all – all else is ignorance
