Sitting down with Viacom’s flagship music network, Grown Simba opens up about his Cole World team up with Shawn Corey Carter…
“I actually did the song thinking I would just throw it out when I made it,” the Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC said of the track, which he originally intended to offer to his fans as a free download. “I made it in my crib and I was like, ‘Man I’m gonna throw something out today, or tomorrow whatever, let me do a song.’ Then I started making it, and as soon as I made it, I was like, ‘Oh nah, nah.’ “
September 27th…

Dude has less buzz now than ever, period. Work Out flopped both commercially and on the streets. Cole and his management keep making bad decisions that are derailing his career, period. The album should’ve been done and out less than 3 months after FNL.
And it’s not that fucking hard to make a hit rap single. Throw shithole bruno mars on the chorus or get an Alex Da Kid production and you got a top ten single. It’s why Big Sean was smart to grab Chris Brown for “My Last”…Brown’s name alone got that single the initial buzz it needed to catch on.

Numerous followers on Twitter, single that was on the Billboard charts, cosigns from dope artists and legends, and a verse on a potential club hit = less than zero buzz?
That’s that real shit right there. :/

The pressure is on Coley Cole… I hope he makes a dope album, gonna be tough to beat Section 80 as far as album of the year so far IMO..

@ Pauly Dee
Let me make this clear that I love Cole and the reason I’m being critical is because he and his management are fucking up his opportunity.
But here we go.
“Numerous followers on Twitter.” Quickly looking following artists have more Twitter followers than Cole: Trina, Soulja Boy, Jim Jones
…Twitter followers mean shit.
“Single that was on the Billboard charts.” Fucking christ, that means shit. STAYING on the Billboard charts means something. Fucking Tom Green’s “Bum Bum Song” was on the Billboard longer.
And “potential club hit?” Come on. Give me an auto-tune machine and a chorus that repeats a variation of “Get your ass on the floor, drop it down low” and I got a club hit.
Yo said this on July 25th, 2011 at 8:17 pm
J cole = you already know how I feel by now so no comment. As for Section 80 being album of the year , I just hope you people saying that have at least listened to the other albums that have come out this year cause you putting alot on Section 80. That is all

…no actual Cole fan would say that because they’d understand the point behind it. Work out was a shitty song without making any radio impact. I’d rather see a shitty song that actually makes an impact. Sorry, forgot talking common sense on the internet was a fools errand.
Yo said this on July 25th, 2011 at 8:20 pm
Cole wants to do this by himself, and I dont blame him. he doesnt want some bum ass way out like chris brown or bruno mars. let him earn it. And cosign @marty mcfly about the album of the year. Section80 was good, but i still prefer Saigon GSNY
Cole World 9/27

Actually, Section.80 is probably the closest thing to a classic from a new school artist and, dare I say, an artist PERIOD in a long time.
@Yo
You’re regarding Work Out like it’s the worst song of the decade. I know it’s far from the stuff that we’re expecting from Cole, but you have to have a bit more faith (though I do think the promotion could be a LOT better). You have to take into account that the song WAS on the charts for a short time, making it into the 80′s. And that’s without a video, serious promo, or anything of the like. We’ll only be able to tell if this single is a flop or not when the video comes out and, about a few weeks later, there’s still no significant response.
Then you also have to take into affect that he has a Trey Songz…uh…song ready for single promo and, by the way he’s going about it, it should be a good single.
After that, there’s the fact that he just jumped on (and produced) a club song with Wale, which is SURE to become a hit once that video drops.
I can’t predict the future. Work Out truly could flop. The Trey track could be completely lack luster. Bad Girls Club could, on the off chance, flop as well. But I think we should just ride this out and watch instead of judging. And, by September or October, we’ll know if Cole himself is a flop or he really is the Messiah (:|) that his fans claim him to be.

Two Things. Section.80 was NOT a classic album by any stretch. It was a 8-8.5/10 album. Very good, very replayable…but not a fucking chance at classic.
If we’re not calling MBDTF classic, then Section.80 being classic is laughable.
As for Cole, the Trey Songz song should have been the lead single and work out should’ve just been scrapped. If you’re gonna use a Kanye sample…the fuck are you using “New Workout Plan” for? That song didn’t even do shit for Kanye. Just dumb management and Cole needs to stop producing himself so much. My point is they’re all just making bad decisions and killing the buzz of an already 26-year-old rapper with no album out.
Yo said this on July 25th, 2011 at 8:46 pm
we don’t need no explanation, no interpretation, no definition… and especially no interview in how a beat you made will sound with camel. you hear me? we don’t need no stinkin’ badges you krispy kreme nigga. let camel spit on the joint, before you get your niples all hard. you said yourself camel got til Aug. 4. couldn’t you fuckin’ wait til Aug. 5th and let your dickriders know how it went down with the track. the way I see it, the joint will fail. you’re already over-hyping the shit nigga. you have all the insights dressing up the BS with a back story and all. if you went the lengths to suck your own dick in this interview, what was the harm to atleast tell niggaz the title of the song. if you can’t even do that, STFU, grab some donuts and finish off the album. one other thing A. Hole, what’s the status on that first single promotion working out for you and your team? A. HOLE YOU PAPOOSED YOURSELF!
NYC/BROOKLYN said this on July 25th, 2011 at 8:53 pm
I never said that Section.80 WAS a classic, I said it was the closest thing TO one. But for the most part, I agree with you. The Trey joint should have been the lead single and Work Out should’ve just been a third single or a bonus track. His promo could be better, but there’s no telling on whether it’ll work out (no pun intended) in the end. None of us know the future and there’s no CERTAIN way that he’ll fail or not.

I just laugh at the people saying “J. Cole lost all his buzz”, “It’s over for him”, etc. SMH. You all are gonna shut up in a few weeks. It seems fickle blog rap fans do this every time, and then the artist delivers (and they were always going too, but just was taking time to make everything right), and then everyone is going to hop back on the bandwagon again like “HERE WE GO! It’s Cole World baby!”
Then, if whatever Cole drops ends up being really hot and blows up and is all over radio, you’ll turn on him again. It’s like a cycle. SMH
M. Hannah said this on July 25th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
Section 80 WILL be a classic. To me it’s a classic, but I understand that it’s only over time that people usually come to realize it/admit it. Especially coming from an independent artist. I remember cats saying Ye’s College Dropout wasn’t a classic when it came out.. no debating it now. The album is undeniable..if he drops a video for “No Make Up” and radio grabs it.. it’s over.

To be a classic you need at least one big culturally impactful song that people will never forget and will always be playing for the next ten years.
marty mcfly said this on July 25th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
Lmao why are you guys mad? Cole is doin this s*** by himself. He wants to control his own destiny. People at the album listening session went crazy for it.
Damn SON said this on July 25th, 2011 at 10:49 pm
@marty mcfly
Section.80 has HiiiPower, Keisha’s Song, Tammy’s Song, No Make Up, Poe Man’s Dream, these all have the things that make classic songs. Everyone has either been saying that the album is either near classic or classic. Anyone that says otherwise isn’t truly LISTENING to the music.
And these aren’t just fan opinions. Check the reviews for the album, from Hip Hop DX to DJ Booth.
Just because it ain’t Kanye or Eminem or anyone else that’s already had their due, doesn’t mean that someone else can’t have a classic.
Pauly Dee said this on July 25th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Do we want artists that put out quality or do you all just want numbers, everyone says its easy to make a hit single, but do you have one!? As soon as he puts out a paint by numbers single everyone is gonna say he sold out. Cole is doing it his way. I am a Cole fan and i would like to see his career take off but if he wants to wait let him wait. You are still gonna listen when it comes out anyway.

Van City said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:12 pm
@Pauly , im not concerned what everybody else says because people say whatever they really wanna believe whether its supported by proof or not. HiiiPower is the only song that even come close to making it into classic realm but I dont think its strong enough to make Section 80 as a whole a classic or even album of the year. People still acting like J Cole is making all the right moves even after three singles that were ok but not really fire. The project I think that will be album of the year is one that none of you would even consider and thats cause you look for other opinions first instead of honestly listening to the music.
marty mcfly said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:13 pm
I think Actual Proof drops a mixtape tomorrow and Evidence drops Cats and Dogs in September. Now of course I havent heard these projects but I hope people give these two projects the same quality of listening that you do Kendrick and J Cole.
marty mcfly said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:30 pm
I think keisha’s song was the best on section 80. then hiiipower. keishas song was so original to mne
Chris_Zurcher said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:31 pm
am i the only one that thinks laws has the mixtape of the year so far.
mark said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:32 pm
Okay, marty mcfly, let’s get ONE thing straight. I said to myself, when I got the album, WITHOUT looking at reviews, that section.80 was a near classic album. It was only a few days ago that I decided to look at reviews and, since I went to people that didn’t bullshit when it came to hiphop, they were all saying the same thing I was saying.
Maybe you, sir, should go back and listen to the album again, because HiiiPower is far from the only classic song on the album (Again, Keisha’s Song, RRA, Rigamortus, and a LOT of the other songs)
Again, its cool that you’re choosing to ignore this but even if you don’t think the album is near or even classic, they’ll be about 19,000 more people saying otherwise.
Pauly Dee said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:34 pm
Well if Kendricks album turns out to be a classic then that would be interesting cause that would mean its gonna have some effects on the sound of hip hop for the next few years. The songs you named were ok but putting them on the same lists as Nas If I world the World and Biggies Juicy and Jays Hard Knock Life etc… is asking alot. If you calling Section 80 a classic thats just very interesting thats all im saying.
marty mcfly said this on July 25th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
And since your saying Section 80 is near classic? Then so is the Soul Tape , Elmatic , Purp N Patron and Rapsody Thank her Now.
marty mcfly said this on July 26th, 2011 at 12:13 am
why all the hate on Bruno Mars lol, boy can sing… and Cole really does need to take a lesson from Big Sean, Cole’s a better rapper but Sean is good, and alot better and picking singles and knowing how to appeal to the masses. im not saying the whole album has to have big features like Finally Famous, but atleast a single or 2 should be!
phrayzermusic said this on July 26th, 2011 at 2:08 am
If anyone calls anything from the past 5 years classic they are just ridiculously ignorant. As far as Section80, it’s dope but if music is classic within a month to you, your music taste and lasting value in contemporary hip-hop material must be ridiculously awful.
