(2)Deep: The Most Expensive Hip-Hop Record Is…

A super rare test press of Akinyele’s Break a Bitch Neck. It’s rumored that there are only 10 – 17 of these in existence, with the last one selling at £3000 ($5000 at the time). Currently, there is a copy floating around going for £ 2250.00 or $3613.05. Along with Rammellzee vs. K-Rob’s Beat Bop (the original featured custom artwork by Basquiat), these are considered Holy Grails for connoisseurs and hardcore diggers alike. The songs that were featured on this were Break A Bitch Neck featuring Kool G. Rap (produced by Large Pro) and the highly sought after No Exit (pt. 2) produced by Dr. Butcher. Check below for a radio rip courtesy of DJPB. What’s the most y’all paid for a CD, record, cassette, 8-track, etc?

  1. I bought a copy os KRS1′s Spiritual Minded for 100$ from a friend…

  2. I think you may have gotten raped on those prices my friend. That’s pretty crazy! I paid $80 for a cassette of Akinyele’s Vagina Diner. I then found a copy for $30 a month later. #fail

  9. @ Trackstar Mad props to you for having Maestro Fresh Wes in your crates. Naaah, Dis Kid Can’t Be From Canada. Slept on.

  10. $18.99 for Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek’s (Reflection Eternal)- Train Of Thought. Best 19 bucks every spent! The CD doesn’t even play anymore, due to the scratches and “ring of death” that my old ’99 Chevy Blazer’s CD player used to leave on discs. I’ll never get rid of it though!

  11. Damn! Yall got me lol! Most I paid for wuz $22 for 2Pac’s Better Dayz album

  12. Nine’s ‘nine livez’ is $68 and up…….I want that album (again)

  13. real music diggers pay hundreds to thousands for records… unless you love music and dig you wouldn’t understand that. try digging for old jazz, rock records from indie labels from all over the world.

  14. $30 for Pharoahe Monch’s ‘Internal Affairs’ that was still in the shrink wrap in like ’04. That shit goes so hard!

  15. What about Tribe’s Electric Relaxation. I got that unopened. Yes original.

  17. K-Dee “Ass, Gas Or Cash (No One Rides For Free)” on Ice Cube’s Lench Mob Records. $60 U.S. on e-bay. For a good laugh check the price of it on amazon.com

  18. @Knowledge & @trackstar. that pray to da east w/ Percee P is a favorite track off that Maestro Fresh Wes joint. That album is slept on. cool you made over 250 off that shit. was it still in the wrap? My homie and I exchanged hard drives when we were deployed in afghanistan that’s how I ended up with it. it’s a good ass album.

  24. @skillzdoper…. It was a promo copy I picked up in a dollar bin somewhere. $1 well spent.

  25. The Remnant’s Anthem of A Life and Pharoahe’s Internal Affairs, both ran about 55/60 bucks.

  26. anyone gotta mediafire or megaupload on this monster? eehh?

  27. Who the fuck spends that much on an old sup-bar albeit rare vinyl record. Just because it’s rare doesn’t mean it’s good. I’ll rather spend that amount of cash on a large selection of dope records. SMH.

  28. I dropped 35 for “Stakes Is High” vinyl. Most I’ve spent on a piece of wax.

  29. @ VSOP Most I paid was $55 for Nine’s Cloud 9 CD. Bought the tape when it dropped and popped that bitch from rockin it so hard!

  30. One of my all-time goals in life is to cop an original Purple Tape. I’m not a cratedigger but I am a hip-hop head to the core

  31. When I worked at Sam goody in 2000, I rung a bitch up and watched her pay $21.11 for that Soulja Slim ” Give It To Em Raw” cd he had with NoLimit, lmao. I laughed soo hard after that bitch left the store. dumb hoe

  32. Most i paid? 40$ for a cd with Unreleased UGK.

  33. eminem – marshal mathers lp
only cd i bought in my life
dad broke it in half when he heard the track kill you

  34. $30 for bth was great. I wish i got the imported one for £20 when i could.

ended up buying 2nd hand for £75, but then got a new one for £6 cos of a computer fuck up, and sold for £120. boo yah

  35. It’s funny, any music connoisseur can actually say they own A piece of music! The digital era will never have that feeling. An mp3 won’t ever get starched, or taken everywhere you go, nor held. Everyone paid crazy sums in others opinion’s but it was worth every coin and bill.

  36. As usual, Justice just adding dope shit to this site. Yo, you need your own blog for this type of shit. Anyone know of any good torrents of comprehensive 90′s era gems like this?

  37. I paid $60 for Pharoahe Monch’s “Internal Affairs” on vinyl. I bought it off Amazon.com brand new. Still in the plastic. It’s still in the plastic today. I think that’s a great price considering it got taken off the shelf and had been out of print for almost a decade.

  38. The most i ever paid was $18.99 for brotha lynch season of the siccness…and i sold it 2 days later for $20.

  39. @CZZ you must not know what collectors are. Just like there are car collecctors, sports memorabilia collectors, and art collectors, some people do that for music.
It’s not my thing but I think it’s pretty sweet. This is some shit I’d frame in my house.

  40. Most spent on wax… Company flow-funcrusher plus $40,Raekwon- the purple album-$30,MF Doom-Operation dooms day original $50, Organized Kunfusion-self titled 1st album-$40, O.C.-Word life $35….all well worth it & get burn to this day … I love this hip hop shit!!!

  41. Check out my new video I’m a aspiring artist trying to get some feedback I’m second verse watch please I want to really be posted on this site. Fat Raps video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtube_gdata_player&v=2LcoV7X-d4w

  42. For a CD, I spent just about $20 for a copy of “Moment of Truth” by Gang Starr that I copped at Fat Beats NY’s closing, but I ended up getting it signed by DJ Premier, so it was incredibly worth it. For wax, $20 on a copy of Prince’s “1999″ album. This is only so far, by the way. I’m sure that I’ll spend way more on vinyls later on.

  43. I paid $25 plus shipping for a copy of Pharoahe Monch, Internal Affairs a few months ago. That and my Last Emperor, Music, Magic, & Myth are probably my most valuable albums. Also, the eF@mm cd, Happy Fuck You Songs.

That’s dope to know about the Beat Bop album, I didn’t know Basquiat did the cover art. I would love to get one of those.

  44. My ex girlfriend ALMOST bought me Below the Heavens for $120 off some person in Australia. I’m definitely an idiot for that one.

  45. Anybody who fetishes this stuff is an idiot and has missed the central message of all hip-hop..

  46. I don’t think I’ve paid over 30€ for any album, there’s just too much “cheap” albums I still don’t have to start buying rare shit.

  47. $50 for Ras Kass Soul On ICe

  48. Never paid over $20 for a record because I copped shit like Doomsday, Special Herbs 1 & 2, Internal Affairs and Below The Heavens the day they dropped.

    Fuckin newjacks.

  49. Bought the Newcleus Computer Age (Push the Button) 12″ for $12 a few months ago – worth every penny, played it last night at a gig.

Paid $50 for a My Bloody Valentine Loveless LP. back in 2003 before it was reissued. Paid $30 for a De La Soul Three Feet High & Rising LP – then that was reissued too a couple of months later.

  50. $50 for Slipknot – Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat.

  51. 60$ for Ready To Die on vinyl, original press, opened but shrink wrap still around it with the sticker on it reading “if you dont know now you know” and a couple tracks listed on it. Also 40$ for Real Live – The Turnaround on vinyl, 35$ for Cash Money Click 12″ “4 my click” and 30$ for the Ghostface “Box in Hand Pt.2″. List goes on!

  52. $30 for a copy of Life After Death Double cassette on the Friday before it officially dropped! I wanted to be the first to bump it on the block that weekend! I’m not a collector of physical copies so I really dont get paying exhorbant amounts of money for rare records sneakers etc…, but to each his own!Im all about the music dont really care what it was recorded on tape lp mp3 so on so forth!

  53. Great to see music lovers in here. Outside of Hip-Hop records, I’ve dropped $75 on a rare Miles Davis piece, $95 for Edwin Starr – Hell Up in Harlem and $50 a piece for three Black Uhuru albums.

  54. Oh I own Below the Heavens, is that valuable?

  55. €50 for PackFM’s “Freestyle Marathon” single

  56. I bought Below The Heavens for 100 or something a few months ago. cheapest i had seen it so i jumped up

  57. Paid $130 for Below The Heavens by Blu & Exile. There was another available for $500.00, so I thought it was a deal, lol. Then the re-release copies came out. Oh well atleast I got an original.

  58. Back in early-mid 90′s, Camelot Music had a deal where for every $10 you’d spend, you’d get 1 punch on a card. When you got 25 punches, you could trade them for a cd. So basically, at the minimum I paid $250 for my first cd. The cd? Raekwon “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx”. And you know what? I’d spend that much for it again today.

  59. woot I got below the heavens for 10 when it dropped.

  60. Yo WTF is a cd? Vinyl? Record? Haha

  61. i paid 30 euros (approx. 42 $) for 1st down “a day with the homiez”, original press on payday, i couldn´t believe it when i saw it!!!

  62. $120.00 on the beastie boys anthology on wax . 4 lp
