Are Unsigned Rappers Turning Into Terrorists? (Video)

The JumpOff crew speaks on the latest topic: aspiring rappers.

Unsigned Rappers are desperate to be put on these days, from stalking industry peeps on twitter to climbing traffic light poles in Times Square and making outrageous demands. Is this because the music business is rewarding hustle more than talent?

  1. fuck this where that new lil b?

  2. Despite what they say that they can’t make an artist famous, they can. With enough posting of an artist’s music, the more that the public hears and recognizes their shit. Thus, they go to their shows and support them. So that right there Low Key talking about is bullshit. Hiphop bloggers are more like what the radio used to be in the 90s, ’cause now THEY’RE the ones that’s telling these artists “yo don’t chase us, go in the streets, you don’t need us to break you, we’ll find you”. Well if the radio don’t play them, the blogs don’t post them, and MTV/BET/VH1 don’t play them, how are they gonna engage people on a consistent basis to check them out and go to these shows? 100% of these artists that you guys at 2DopeBoyz post everyday I would’ve NEVER heard of them if you didn’t do so. Some of these artists that ya’ll post on this site are personal friends of mine, and I STILL wouldn’t hear their new projects if it wasn’t for blogs like this. I need for bloggers to stop acting like they’re the radio and television and give the public the option and decision to listen to these people and let THEM judge on who’s wack and who isn’t. Otherwise they wouldn’t have to do the crazy shit with lightpoles.

  3. yes they are everytime i go on video of youtube of artist its some artist on there saying how much he killed the beat better and to check out his page or on twitter just spaming the shit out of artist

  4. That white chick lost me at the Outkast comment..That just shut the hip hop credibility down for everybody SMFHHH

  5. is that a serious question?

  6. Whoever edited this video gave me a fuckin’ headache. It’s so jumpy.

  7. @whocares Right! It’s like every 5 seconds…They must have been saying some useless shit.

  8. These people are quite high up on their horses.

  9. lol @3:22 homegirl says that when outkast first came out people didnt think it was really hip-hop. so some people still think their first single was “hey ya”

  10. not all rappers(mc’s)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV5CUPbQaYc

  11. I agree with both whatupsucka ans Steve’s comments. Some of these Hip-Hop bloggers/taste makers need to punched in the face, for real. These folks really think they’re something. SMH

  12. i agree that people are doing some super outlandish shit but some of the stuff they said towards the end was a bit too much. i get it, you guys are bombarded with music and a lot of it is assjuice but saying not to give you cds is bonkers too. the people who suck are ruining it for those who actually have potential, just cuz you get 50-11 herbs hitting you with shitty music that shouldn’t bar you from accepting peoples’ stuff and checking it out cuz you might end up passing up on the next big l or something.

  13. I agree. The funny thing is, when they see that the passed on finally make it, they’ll become Stans quick.

  14. that youtube link rayclev posted was nuts.

  15. who exactly do these people think they are?

  16. can i please be reminded on what a bloggers job is again? how are you gonna tell me not to send you music? That is the problem with the culture everyone wants to be “That Nigga” at the end of the just take it for what it is Art. if your job is to listen and post music then expect ppl who want their music listened to, to send you music.

  17. i respect what most of these bloggers are doing but saying not to send you music is like saying destroy the reason why i started this shit to begin with

  18. When Outkast first Came out they were booed and ridiculed at the annual source awards. Salt and Pepa even said ” What the fuck is an Outkast?” So yeah, that “whitegirl” knows exactly what she is talking about.

  19. fuck these blog people’s opinions. Who the fuck are you?? “Don’t give me a cd” Bitch nobody would ever pick your face out of a crowd to give you a cd, you groupie. Nobody knows who you are.

  20. Who made these people Hip-Hop specialists?

  21. I don’t think some bloggers know the power they hold when they decide to blog music. It may not be for these hip-hop sites like 2dopeboyz, nahright and etc, BUT trust and believe that blogs are the new radio AND A&R’s do scoop these blogs for the next up coming thing. Sometimes numbers don’t play a factor when it comes to an act that has visible, true talent. I manage an artist and by being on the right blogs, I’ve had A&R’s of big name record labels hit me up — OFF ONE SONG. So that is kind of bullshit when they say blogs can’t make you famous or whatever, because in a way, it can put you right where a good artist needs to be.

  22. I wonder if 2DBZ is going to post the new Pusha T track?

  23. I can honestly see where both sides are coming from. but I feel like these personalities/bloggers are taking it to the extreme just as the “unknown rappers” are. they’re think they’re so high up that these upcomers will do anything to get their attention sad to say

  24. Oh yeah, may I also add that while disclaimers are being thrown around in the video that “blogs can’t make you famous and blah blah blah,” these bloggers indeed need to get off their high horse and humble up. If yo ass wasn’t at the Watch The Throne listening party…. well I rest my case. Talk all the big dawg shit when you’re an Elliot Wilson yo. I don’t like music links tweeted at me either, but to say “don’t give me your CD”. YO. If niggas can’t get shine on the blogs, why can’t they grind in the street. I understand 80 percent of it is garbage, but come on yo… feeling their self much! Unless you’re documenting the CURRENT hip-hop culture like Rap Radar, I don’t wanna hear a blogger talking shit like they don’t need music to be made in the first place. You’re reason for existing would be none. SMH. This industry and the stuck up attitudes that come with it. Humble up people, damn!

  25. Shake Gay Ass Not Gonna Post It Becuz He’s AN Overweight Vegetarian…

  26. homie got a lip ring though

  27. I dont even know these people why would I give them a cd if I rapped? Stop flattering yourself.

  28. I see two emcees in this convo and Since when does bloggers speak for unsigned artists and their actions? Bloggers are not artists. Im just saying. Im a photographer. Do you see me giving advise to emcees..no case close Rule4080!

  29. as an aspiring artist myself i would say absolutely to the fact that your hustle is more important to your talent nowadays. You can have the dopest rhymes but if no one hears it, then your nothing, but if your out doing shows and people start seeing your face here and there and your pulling outrageous publicity stunts then people take interest.

  30. word

  31. they say “get on the streets and hustle” but then they say “dont give me your cd”. hmmmmm

  32. This whole conversation and subject matter is stupid. You calling unsigned artists terrorists? These is kids for the most part thats just trying to make it in life. Yeah they can go about it smarter but get off your high horse with that dumb shit.

  33. The thing unsigned cats gotta remember is there is Millions of you… Millions. A significant portion of you are dope and significant portion of you are alright and a significant portion of you are complete Trash. So for them to post every artist they think is dope would just be irresponsible. Just think listening to 50 artists you’ve never heard of a day, 1 or 2 tracks max cause anymore would be a waste of time. And then having to filter through who’s dope who’s ok, who’s trash and then figuring which of these guys have commercial appeal not just in mainstream but also underground cause there is mainstream in the underground. So then after you narrow those guys you gotta think about how your gonna pitch these guys. Ya cant just say. “Hey listen to this guy” and ya damn sure cant just post it. Not to mention often times its not the artist its the song the artist chose to give to them that can dictate everything.

So this is why they have to find you. Cause if they had to hand pick everything they wouldnt have time to do their job. Your talkin 4 minute average songs more than 50 artists a day there is no time to live, there is no time to make a living, there is no time for anything. So no they are not obligated to post your shit. If they find you then that means it was meant to be, that means you made a big enough impact on someone to get your name to your ear. That means you did enough work to influence enough people to post your shit on their facebook or Twitter. That means your music is quality enough for the circle they are in to utter your existence.

  34. These guys are all total fucking idiots, sorry. The internet helps, the streets help, being a celebrity can help, but at the end of the motherfucking day, it comes down to WHETHER PEOPLE LIKE YOUR MUSIC. Not whether your music is lyrical, not whether you have a few views on WorldStar, at the end of the day, it’s how many people like your shit. It doesn’t matter if you have the lyrics “fuck the world” on loop over a hot beat. If enough people like it, you have a market.

If you’re all lyrics and no good beats/hooks, don’t fucking complain. If you’re all beats and suck at rapping and can’t ride the beat, get the fuck outta here.

You gotta develop a fanbase on your own. How do you think artists like Kreayshawn get signed? They grind on their own, not beg people to listen or pay 2DBZ to post their shit up…

If you’re good, and put an emphasis on all around quality, you’re going to succeed at the end of the day… That’s all. There are no shortcuts.

  35. The dude with the pig nose sounds like a cynic. First he says “the internet aint gonna make you famous” and then he says “get on these streets and hustle” and then he says “dont give me your cd” the fuck? and then the girl sitting down corrects him and says “the internet is a good way for people who dont have the machine behind them” and then pig nose says “the internet is great.”. this dude just seems to have negative energy in every video. stay away from people like him if youre trying to be somebody… he’ll just discourage you. he made his intention clear when he said “the only shit i wanna hear is watch the throne”. He has no intentions encouraging anybody. I dont evne know who he is but he is a great example of the types of people you need to distance yourself from as an ambitious individual.. whoever you are.

  36. This is stupid. Big Sean Met Kanye at a radio show he would freestyle on. J Cole waited for Jay-Z in the Cold for hour just to give him his tape. Missy Elliot went to Jodeci Concert and performed for him. You have to take chances to get your name out there

  37. Dvvovalllove couldn’t agree more

  38. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaJiFB8mfWc

  39. I would never hire any of these cats if I was the head of a major label cuzz they aren’t trend setters or looking for gold. These folks are followers, they like what other’s like or say is dope. They need a co sign to listen to a artist. More than likely they will never know the next big thing because they aren’t looking for the next big thing. These dummies want the cats that already is getting buzz.

Bloggers are suppose to be on the front line like a journalist looking for the next breaking story or investigation. If you are blogging and not excepting demo’s or music from artist you never heard of then shame on you. As a dj i would never turn down anyone’s vinyl or cd why because I want that shit nobody is hip too therefore I will have to digg through the shit to find the gold. I hope you hear me.

  40. One more thing, if your blog is really popping isn’t it about time to get interns to screen ish for you?

  41. The title of this section is one thing but I will say again that rappers need to go about handling business a better way cause waiting on a deal or a cosign or blog support is just not the smart thing to do. Just get in the car and lock down your own city and state by yourself. That would be better for your brand of music anyway and probably make you more money independently and cost you alot less money then dealing with industry bullshit.

  42. Dvvovalllove and Mr. Wow, I couldn’t agree more.

  43. @marty mcfly your right thats what the southern niggas were doing back in the 90′s-early 00′s i think the internet is just a way for people outside the city or state can find you how you think cash money got were they started david banner young jeezy nipsey hussle No limit immortal technique and luda all started out like that start push yo shit out the trunk of ya car fam yall gotta really study the game

  44. Niggas from the Bay area like E 40 and Too short were doing crazy numbers out the trunk way before everybody else and now people with a million followers online and on twitter cant even sell 10k units. Thats why I say never forget the streets where you live at all that extra shit is just a extra headache anyway cause the game is only gonna help a few niggas career at a time. Usually two or three niggas get heavy promotion a year, So why wait for another mothafucka to help you make money? That shit makes no sense , no lie ive seen people with my own eyes sell 100k on their own without no help outside of their own crew. DO IT YOURSELF

  45. It’s pretty ironic that this video is getting at at desperate artists trying to be heard. Much like the music world where the internet has given birth to a billion people who think they can rap, its not much different in the journalist/blog domain. Everybody with a blog is out to be a “taste-maker” and attempting to critique culture and the music industry while putting in minumal effort to ACTUALLY RESEARCHING what you’re talking about. A bit far fetched to take an extreme case ie. guy climbing a pole, and labeling them terrorist? This sounded like high-school gossip, not a healthy discussion about the industry. …so on that note…if you’re going to make a video critiquing the quality of artist’s work, originality or effort, you’d better make sure you’re doing the same thing…cause watching this video was like listening to Kobe rap.

ps. why was everyone shocked when the white girl brought up the point about Outkast? Outkast has mentioned this themselves several times.

  46. @marty mcfly i feel you on that i niggas get so fascinated with the T.V shit labels can get you all that money girls and shit sometimes they hold niggas down with good promo put how long will that last labels trust dont last long u gotta hold ya own for longevity

  47. @Astro thats why You gotta know the history of where you come from. Whether you from the west , east , south , north or where ever its somebody close by that done moved alot of units on their own. Hard copy or digital , I live in the bay and I can name ten rappers from out here who done went ghetto platinum. So the money is out there so stop waiting for a cosign or a label cause they not gone understand your music anyway. You just gone look like a big ass dollar sign. ONE

  48. I like how you complain about rappers sending you music, but you post some of the trashiest upcoming talent ever. I listen to half of these dudes that you guys hype up on your blogs and they will never make it to the mainstream. I have an idea… if you don’t want ppl to send you music, don’t make your email public! That would solve everything. The truth is you actually like all these rappers sending you music because it adds to your ego. Come down off your high horse and realize that your just a messenger for the real celebrities. Stop posting your buddies music and post some of the real talent out there.

  49. This video is so lame. What if J. Cole had never tried to give his CD to Jay-Z? What if Big Sean had never went to the radio station and rapped for Kanye? I understand you can’t listen to everyone’s music, but if an artist presents him or herself correctly I think you should consider listening to them. I agree you can’t make them famous because your aren’t famous yourself, but you can help them. Even if it’s just posting their music on your blog. This is why we have so many shitty artists in the game now. Maybe if you guys held a competition where you judged music and maybe rewarded the winner with a post and a sponsored mixtape you could actually help the artists that you believe can change the game. You can’t complain about hip-hop if your not willing to use your resources to change it!

  50. Who the fuck are they?

  51. Underground rappers make hip-hop interesting. Just to think, every big time name started off underground. Jay-Z Was Told He Was Whack by labels because he rapped too fast. Outkast got shitted on, Shit some extremely talented emcees are still underground.

  52. Its like they got together and said: hey fuck this new music ppl are sending us lets post the same videos/songs/interviews etc every other blog is posting and suck each other off and spend our day tweeting each other and celebrities and bragging about how we got to hear “watch the throne”

  53. Gotta agree with @Nick

Instead of being pioneers, they want to saturate the internet with the same crap everyone else is posting. Sites like DJBooth actually try to help upcoming artists. These guys are so caught up in thinking they’re famous they can’t see how irrelevant they are. If your so famous and necessary for hip-hop why is the Federal Government constantly shutting down your sites? There are a million blogs on the net, if yours is seized ppl will just go to the next. Your just popular hip-hop fans. Take it how you want it…

  54. that john mayer marylin manson comment was dumb as fcuk

  55. the blogs are obviously ain’t watching…the streets lost there voice years ago. Someone else mentioned this in the first couple of comments …the bloggers now have taken up the spots that where held by radio personalities….enough money or friendship and you can have your shit posted on 2dopeboyz or any other blog for that matter. Lame muthafuckas get to call the shots that’s what pisses me off. At least have someone who looks like he knows what the fuck he talking about

  56. LowKey may have the dumbest face I’ve ever seen. Nigga looks like a massive dipshit. These people act like they’re label CEOs or someshit…hell, even someone who has good pull on the media. The john mayer comment just proved this woman is just talking for the sake of talking. I agree with the rap fans being ignorant and not wanting to learn the history statement a lot but honestly, it’s not something we could change. “Don’t give me a cd” after “you gotta hustle” is just retarded, you say “don’t tweet me your music”, I fully understand that but exactly HOW are you going to hustle if you can’t send a cd or an ep to a blog to get a bit of promo? You know, take a bit out of your time and check it out, you don’t know if today you’re using this young artist’s demo as coaster then, a few years later, he becomes the next big thing because of some other factor. “We can’t make you famous”…wrong. You could HELP people become famous by promoting the music you like by them. There’s BOUND to be something you’ll like on there. Here’s a metaphor, the artist’s career is a car, promo and exposure are the gas and the labels/the machine behind them is the gas station. You need some gas to start moving forward, the promo is gonna add to this “car” and push it forward, with enough “gas”, you could reach “the gas station” then you’ll have the essential piece to forwarding your career to the limit. In a way, yes. You can’t make people famous but you sure can help them get there. I respect everyone’s opinion on this but some of the things were just said because the person felt left out. p.s. someone tell Lowkey to invest in some shades, his eyes are like O_O

  57. I wonder how much you would have to pay to get a post on some of the “major” blogs.

  58. I swear this video makes me angry. SMH

  59. PEOPLE DID SAID OUTKAST WASN’T HIP HOP THE SOURCE AWARDS WEST VS EAST WHEN OUT OUTKAST WENT UP ON STAGE AND SAID THE SOUTH IS GOING TO RUN HIPHOP AND THEY LAUGHED THEM OFF STAGE THEY SAID TYLER THE CREATOR ISN’T HIP HOP AND DJ PREMIER COSIGNED THE DUDE AND SAID THE KID GETS IT HE’S HIMSELF AND NO ONE ELSE HE CREATIVE AND HE HAS A BRAIN OF HIS OWN THAT’S THE PROBLEM NO ONE HAS A BRAIN OF THERE OWN AND THATS WHAT’S HIP HOP IS A EXPRESSION OF ONE SELF

  60. @son of sam I agree

  61. Damn my grammar fuck up lol

  62. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcDMgysSZ9c&feature=player_embedded

the dj primo tyler the creator
    cosign

  63. lowkey doesnt look dumb he just got a dog face,
and i think these people have a false sense of importance. Its okay for them to have an opinion about hip hop artists… but don’t get on a high horse and try to give people tips about “how to make it” as if your opinion is somehow of more value than the average joe. You have no pull in the industry let’s keep it real. People don’t even know you. You can’t do anything for anybody trying to get on. c’mon son. I’d walk past you on the street and wouldn’t give 2 shits.

  64. interesting video lol but obviously unsigned rappers can only b considered terrorists to people they supposedly “hound” hence the video of these bloggers complaining everybody else just doesnt know the rapper so cant feel “terrorised”. over all they basically said we dont want to help new rappers ur annoying. mmmm inspirational.

  65. the JO crew used to be humble. Now, with all the new subcribers, they now take on a persona. If u put joe buddeens on this one, the whole convo would have a totally different vibe. listen to MRMECC only…Nitty too.

  66. ^^^^*Joe Budden*

  67. who the fuck are these idiots?

  68. they dont understand how marketing works. they know how to buy some shit off tv. but the internet is the new commercial. and any artist who really wants whatever it is they want they’d be then given away a lot of cd’s to bloggers and regular ppl, what makes them think they’re so special?

but they do have a point about the consumers being dumb…..dude with the shit in his lip should be a comedian. tbs. very funny

  69. These guys come off as some assholes. What the fuck did you start a blog for in the first place. My assumption is to play new hot music, and how do you do that if you don’t want people to send that to you. Even though I wouldn’t stand on a light post in time square understand homie’s frustration. These folks need to get off the high horse. yes, getting wack materiel is a hazard of the job, but its a job that yooooou created for yourself. get a grip.

  70. Stu, well said sir. If I had a blog I’d post 98% of the music received not because I like the music but because it’s up to the listeners to decide what they like. JO used to be dope but now, they seem like pompous assholes. Fuck them; once again.

  71. This is comical..bloggers who years ago..where begging for no name rappers to fuck with em..just say could say they were helping UNDERGROUND..or Giving the UNDERGROUND a platfrom…are now complaining about what they have built! ?? I think it was a bad look for Nitty Scott to be up on in bloggers pit complaining about how ppl are trynna get on. I say this cuz she herself JUST started getting ON..hmmm I think 2dopeboyz broke her in Oct… when NOBODY knew who she was… NOW she in ELITE circle…that is complaining? come on son. Fools is on some elite shit … Fools are trying the best THEY KNOW HOW to BE HEARD. I didnt hear NOT ONE REAL NEW CREATIVE REMEDY on other ways to be recognized..just niggas and girls complaining about the game…. like it or not …that is the current game at this time.

  72. NY sh*tted on Outkast when they 1st came out. Why can’t rap have different sub-genres like Rock.

  73. so basically they just said a whole heap of nonsense that doesn’t help artist that are trying to come up at all.
i really like these vids when they get posted but as an artist trying to come up, i just lost a bit of respect for them and their vids.

    and check me out:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tVuKtv3C44

  74. Soulja Boy is dope…”FUCK YO MEAN MUG.”
