Kendrick and Blu are actually kinda a crazy comparison now that I think about it-
Kendrick is as experimental as anybody I’ve heard in a long time; if u listen carefully to Section.80, he pulls in influences from the 90s (hooks, lines, flows, I even heard a little Bone Thugz harmony on Fuck Your Ethnicity), and he does progressive shit thats just brand new. He has straight southern-style bangers (Spiteful Chant), other shit that sounds retro-southern (Blow My High), other shit that’s got a chill smoker’s vibe (Hol’ Up, Kush and Corinthians), and other shit that’s just spazz out and spit (Rigamortis).
At the same time, I can’t think of another artist that has been as consistently creative as Blu. Literally every release he’s dropped has had an ENTIRELY different feel, concept, theme, etc. than anything he’s done before. He doesn’t seem to incorporate influences or polish his art, so much as just create the music (or sometimes just noises) in his head. He’s never been even in consideration for mainstream popularity, and his music seems to embrace his underground status almost defiantly. Blu is the kind of artist that needs the correct setting and a bit of time to grow on you, but once it does he can be describes in no terms other than genius.
The really crazy thing is that despite all the similarities (lyricism, conceptualism, individualism, “Cali-ism”, experimentation, etc) I could never describe them as similar artists. I can’t really identify musically what exactly makes them so different from each other, but there is absolutely no way that anybody could confuse a Blu song and a Kendrick song.
My personal theory is that they’re both independent artists. And the lack of CORPORATE influence has allowed them to develop as artists and create their own sound, their own aura and musical thinking. This is the kind of growth that we all look for in real artists- sonic development and musical progression, without casting away the foundation that its all built on.
