  38. YOU KNEW I WAS GONNA SHOW UP. Ok so I listened to it one time and even though I do hear the potential in Kendrick and I feel he took a risk with the sound of his music which I appreciate , Im not really feeling section 80. The first song ( even though its not a good title ) , Reagan Era , Rigamortus and Hiiipower are DOPE but the rest of the music is too mellow and laid back for me. If your from LA and you want to make chill out laid back music then your in the perfect place because LA has the G funk era sound and producers like DJ Quik , Warren G and battle cat but Kendrick leans more toward the J cole side production wise. Lyrically hes still on point but his delivery is not like your traditional Bar for Bar flow , its a melodic type of beat driven flow so what im about to say next is the most important point of this whole comment. Kendrick needs BEATS !!!!! His flow is already on point so its no need to really elaborate on that BUT it seems to me hes searching for the right sound. Whoever does beats for him in the future needs to understand ELECTRONIC music , which means the beats can be flexible. That style of production can sometimes build up so that by the end of a song you have a bigger sound. Not many producers can blend hip hop with electronic type of music or anything else and make it sound good but I feel thats where he wanted to go. Also he needs faster tempos so he can go crazy with the flow if he chooses and not be confined by the vibe of the beat. Electronic music can start off fast and then get slow and then get quite and then get loud all in one song. Thats probably the type of dynamics he was looking for on this project. Picture the song Yeah Yeah You Would on Dirty Moneys Last Train To Paris but with Kendrick rapping on it ( sorry hip hop heads ). Lastly I think he still should use the traditional LA sound sometimes because it has always worked and people cant resist it. Kendrick is dope but I feel hes trying to master a style the takes alot of musical skill not only lyrically but production wise. For now I gotta say I give about 3 mics outta five like the Source but alot of it has to do with beats and the fact that I think he over did it with the melodies at times when he didnt need too. Like I said though , I still hear the potential so in the future I know he’ll make some fire. PEACE
