Jay-Z – Criminology Freestyle [Unreleased]

In celebration of the 15th Anniversary of Hov’s classic debut, Philly radio’s Colby Colb has decided to liberate a rare Jay-Z interview/freestyle from ’95.

What can I say, this is a historic moment in Hip Hop. At the time I knew of Jay-z from Original Flavor and he had a cameo on this Big Daddy Kane song that was out that summer.

This was before Rocafella, this was best friends Jay and Dame driving down to Philly in twin Lexus GS Coupes with records in the trunk. This was one of Jay-z first interviews outside of New York. You could see the potential in him, he was nervous yet confident. During this interview he talks about life before Reasonable Doubt which didn’t come out until 10 months later. Check out the freestyle over some Wu beats.

The stream includes both the interview and freestyle. Click here to download the freestyle alone. Shouts to RR on the find. Now if only Guru or Just Blaze could be so kind and let loose some other gems as well haha.

  1. damn, this is pretty crazy. Can I Get Open is a dope record, totally different Jay there. Reasonable Doubt is one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever, shame he changed his style…could’ve been one of the GOATs

  2. What’s the beat playing during the interview?

  3. ^^^^I would like to know that as well…sound like some old Boot Camp Click sh!t

  4. I really need the final version of dead presidents 3

  5. He is the GOAT…check his stats lol!

  6. Has Jay ever done any songs with anyone in Wu?

  7. yes odb

  8. I think even though he did change his style up, he’s definately one of the GOATs. Even though I really don’t like the new Jay that much, you have to look at the things he’s done and the shit he’s accomplished.

  9. The beat playing during the interview is “Good Dwellas” by The Cella Dwellas (1995)

  10. The beat is by The Cella Dwellas’ “Good Dwellas”. You gotta be over 30 to remember UG and Phantasm The Tall Man, but Warren G flipped that same sample on his first album, too.

  11. Jay-Z is without doubt one of the GOATs, and not only that, but nobody REPRESENTS hip hop as well as he does. Jay has held down the Hip Hop Presidency since Pac died, and he’s done things Pac would never have been able to. He’s turned around some of hip hop’s biggest haters, he’s been quoted by Obama, and with the possible exception of Frank Sinatra, I would argue that NOBODY has ever played the music business as well as Jay has. No matter how u feel about his music (which is still next-level, 15 years later) this man is the undeniable face of the culture.

  12. in sense of accomplishments, Jay Z is the GOAT. But when it comes to lyrics, there are a few that wayyy better than Jay Z, no doubt.

  13. yea i can’t think of the wu tang beat either. What’s the one right when the freestyle ends?

  14. jay-z is the goat with out a doubt he top level in every catergory lyrics,hits,s11 number 1 albums, ales, acomplishments where as tho like biggie only had lyrics a acouple hits, pac had hit sales albums and good messgaes but lets be honest he not a good lyricist, nas goood 1st album lyrics but nothing really after that, etc jay had alll of the above, we never know what biggie or pac wouldve done , face it biggie was a good rappper but he LOVED money

  15. for articles on music and sports check out therealeastsideperspective.wordpress.com

  16. Jay-Z is the most overrated rapper since pac.

  17. @Goose Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin to Fuck with

  18. i guess accomplishment wise, you can say that. but i don’t really care about those, it’s all about the music to me. he’s a dope rapper who’s made some great songs, but i really just think its the cool thing to call him the GOAT, so they do

  19. @Goose Labels

  20. this is from later than ’95, he talkin bout In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 which was released in ’97, AFTER Reasonable Doubt…my guess is its late ’97, cuz he talkin bout Vol. 2 possibly coming out on Roc-A-Fella or not

  21. @White Mike thanks man

  22. Good lookin Bruto Lee Onis

  23. Damned if he doesn’t have a flow EXACTLY like Jaz-O on this shit!

  24. cult assassin has the best comment on here def tru except pac bein overrated only jay album I liked was reasonable doubt. When he came out there was so many sick albums out there then as he got older the rappers got worse thats why people think jay is ill cause theres no competition anymore and really hasnt been since 98

  25. ^^^ WHAT !!! If theres one thing that the rap game has plenty of , its competition.

  26. not like it used to today everything is so weak compared to what it used to be like

  27. if you like hearing the same hooks over and over or gay ass party music youre the type of kid that thinks drake is sick kid is so bad for rap. the only rapper worth listening to is weezy and he started when rap was good. unless you listen to underground shit that know one nows or really hears thats the good shit some of it

  28. Well, at least we all now know that “jdee” is not worth listening to.

  29. Awesome post. Big up.

  30. That freestyle was terrible

  31. Stats don’t solely define status as you should know. Garbage ass rappers get played over diamonds in the rough all day long.

Jay is definitely up there for all he’s done though, and Reasonable Doubt is one of the best rap albums ever.

  32. How can anyone not call jay ONE of the greatest of all time? at least top 3. He’s the fucking blueprint on how to make it in the game and stay in the business. Ya’ll are just some haters. If you listen to reasonable doubt you know that, even then, he was a beast in the game and if he wasn’t do u really think anyone would still be talking about his ass?

  33. Well Guru has passed away so I doubt he’ll be releasing anything….

  34. ^^^

    Different Guru my dude…

  35. this dude is so dope, he opening up for tyga and diggy simmons, check him out:

  36. This was on a mixtape called Marcy to Madison Square from 04, it has plenty of other dope joints on it like an alternate version of Don’t You Know where Jay disses Nas, wish he would’ve released that instead of Superugly
