While catching J*DaVeY and Elevator Fight (fronted by Zoë Kravitz) at Brooklyn’s Southpaw (yeah, that place has been jumping the past few days) Tuesday night, FADER caught up with Drake to speak on his sophomore album.

Interviews, Video

who did he say is the new edition?
I wish he would stop rapping and saying nigga and just keep singing…
Zoe is my wife
The Weeknd…dope
so is it true that the r&b mixtape that drake talked about doing has really turned into what will be his next album take care?
dude seems respectable in this interview, but for real what the fuck you rockin a scarf on your head for?!
looks fuckin ridiculous, kinda excited to hear how this one turns ou….but not as excited i am for thursday!
it never gets old on how much dude talks like a faggot and fits the part
WoW! For all the ‘nigga this’ and ‘nigga that’ stuff Drake kicks in his lil’ rhymes, dude sounds as soft as ocean waves at santa monica beach. His voice leaves me to believe he should NOT be using that word. Seems like Jew not a brotha no matter how many times he picks his JewFro! Im jus sayin…
I see the haters made it out.
Even though I think Drake is the worst dressed rapper in the game , I think he comes across as awkward because I think hes still trying to figure out where hes trying to take the game because like it or not hes in the driver seat as far as being the youngest on the level hes on. He probably wasnt prepared to blow up as fast as he did and is still processing how to handle that situation. I could be wrong but just saying.
“Generic songs about the struggle” – was that a dig at J. Cole? Just kiddings. Check out my mixtape though if you have time..

Let me know what you guys think! http://tiny.cc/wlszl
What’s the track at the beginning?
No this nigga should stop singing and get back to rapping but not that wack ass lame punchline rapping he has been doing he needs to go back to just straight rapping like he was doing before he got signed with YM.
“dude sounds as soft as ocean waves at santa monica beach.” PICO PRESI
what a lame thing to say
Drizzy Drake Man. Dreams Money Can Buy
so cuz his voice sounds soft..he cant say ‘nigga’..since when do u need to have a DMX-esque voice to be real?? Tyson sounded like ‘oceans wave at a santa monica beach’ (lame ass analogy btw) too..and I’m pretty sure he would press the snooze button located on ur chin easy..why do I even come on sites to talk smack..get ya dick in sum pussy or sumthin..smh
*why do ya
@ Gooose and @ Why say this.
Why are you even responding to a lame comment? hmmm.. Its not that his voice is soft its that he is not african amercian, therefore should not be using the Nword. period. Why even use it if thats really not how he ‘seems’ to have been socialized, based on the cadence in his voice, ethnicity?? He uses it to fit in and that’s more lame then my comment and your dick rider defense of the Aubry the Actor of Jewish descent.
I thought Drakes dad was a black man from memphis? So im pretty sure Drake is black. Thing is that 90% of rappers are really not who they tell you they are so when you see someone who is not afraid to expose their real self , it seems out of the ordinary. Alot of rappers just give you one side of them , Drake expresses all sides even his own flaws. Thats why sometimes I like to hear songs with mistakes and contradictions in them cause it lets me know that song is honest.
drake’s father is black, so there’s no problem with him saying the ‘n’ word… the problem that throws people off is that he strikes as just another sweet nice canadian guy… then in his songs he comes as sounding like a young money blood member
I dont hear a wannabe blood gang member when I listen to Drake , I hear a rapper that takes an R&B approach when he makes music. That usually contains subject matter that revolves around women , just like a singer does. I dont think his raps get the credit he deserves but thats normal for people to overlook dope lyrics but Drake be speaking on alot of real shit sometimes. Like – “How many of our parents marriages lasted , I was only 5 so I bet I barely reacted” That line alone has alot of layers to it. His first album gets deep lyrically at times so people gotta realize he earned hi spot by spitting bars like those.
“drake’s father is black, so there’s no problem with him saying the ‘n’ word” ummmmm…. okay moving right along here.
the Nword has been used as a term of endearment amongst inner city black youth living in the ghetto, not privilaged half black half jewish kids from Canada who are former actors. So again, I like drake when Im driving to the club with broads in my back seat and all BUT its mad corny how he tries to be more ‘hood’ than he really is.
Pico is kind of right. When Drake says “Nigga”, he sounds uncomfortabe and just plain wrong. Like he’s saying it to try to fit in with the Status Quo of the Rap Game. And, marty, I’ve heard Drake say Soowoo or something in a song or two when he was with Wayne. Don’t remember the name though.
Bottomline is, Drake needs to stop trying to act all “Gangsta” and whatnot. People can see that that is not how you live and you’re not going to get more fans by doing it.
“Do ya own thang, fuck what they do.”
If Drake using the N word makes you upset then you should prolly just ignore it because thats really just a small issue thats not really a problem cause Drake is a nigga. I think Drake probably struggled in his life but for people who believe he was just brought up rich just because he was on TV , you need to ask yourself , can money write albums and mixtapes? NO so who is making the lyrics behind Drakes music? Its Drake so it doesnt matter if he grew up rich or not because money doesnt buy skills. You can pay people to write a few songs but not 3 mixtapes and a platinum album. AND if Drakes identity crisis at times bothers you I dont know why because if were gonna be real , how many of us thought we were gangsta when we were young just because we hung around other gangstas? Most of us. Drake is rich , young and hanging around Baby and Wayne so of course some of their influence is gonna be in his music but he aint trying to be them.
^^
I don’t think that anyone should call him rich because of the tv show. Look at his background, he’s gone through a lot. I have heard from countless artist that music is a deep reflection of self. If you rap about money, drugs, and bitches than you most likely live the same somewhat lifestyle of those mentioned things. And you don’t really know if he isn’t being influenced by them personality wise.
Lastly, the nigga word in his music kind of is a problem. Like in Marvin’s Room and Trust Issues, when I heard nigga, it kind of slowed the momentum of the song down, making it seem boring and boring with each nanosecond.
@marty mcfly “If Drake using the N word makes you upset then you should prolly just ignore it” – Not tossing and turning over Drake decision to be fraudulent thats on him
Secondly, “can money write albums and mixtapes?” Art imitates life and vice versa and when he gets into his struggle raps – Ah La “Light Up”, he speaks on how much of a VICTIM HE IS for being famous and rich. he speaks on general things people can relate to, but not shit niggas I know grew up in, soooo.
Someone above me mentioned how they heard drake spit a line about bloods that was on “Take it girl” where he says: “Im double cupped right now, SOO-WOO to the bangers…” So he musta grew up blood aphiliated and can use it when its fashionable? Bottom line is that every human struggles, but why exaggerate it with themes that aint yoo? Thats where the disconnect is for me as a fan.
Drakes talented and all and I listen to him but I know his image is plastic and unfortunately some of his fans dont wanna ackowledge that.
There are too many people eager to criticize in this world.
The biggest reason why I like Drakes music is because I feel he is being real. Bring up the lyrics where he is lying and go from there cause the fact is he is blood affiliated because hes signed to YMCMB and he is a real for making something of his life and he has been robbed at gun point so he does realize what the streets are about. So unless you can bring up lyrics from him that are lies I dont know where your coming from.
@ Marty McFly.
Dude…. SMH. I want you to go back and re-read what you just wrote my guy, seriously.. go back and read it. You said “in fact he is blood affiliated”. What city are you from man? Well, Im from Los Angeles and Wayne is not a real gangbanger. I do not support that livestyle at all and anyone who is really in that livestyle knows it aint fashionable. Nipsey Hussle, that is a bonified real gang member, he exudes it and no matter what he does he cant help it. Its not an act like wayne and them. Theres a difference.
Secondly, “He has been robbed at gun point so he does realize what the streets are about..” THATS LAUGHABLE LOL no really I laughing at how some people think getting shot or robbed somehow makes THEM street oriented. FALSE.
Lastly, I just gave you lyrics above bruh, he’s not a SOO-WOO blood gang member aphiliate or a nigga, etc. He’s a biracial guy from Canada.
Look I like Drake, hes talented, I bought his album and DL his songs occationally but I dont respect music artist that try to bolster their career by Assimilating to Whats cool in Hood Pop Culture when that just not them.
No getting robbed doesnt make you street but I dont even think Drake is trying to act like a gangsta in the first place. 2nd im not from LA but I know LA very well and even though you mite say Wayne and Baby aint real bloods , the reality is that they’ve been claiming blood for more then ten years and continue to rep it today. Your picking the smallest reasons to diss Drake when thats crazy. I know people in LA dont respect what people from outside they city do but the reality is when Wayne is out there nobody does shit about it and yeah Bloods may have started in LA but there has been bloods in New Orleans for almost 20 years now so it is what it is. Drakes music is far from blood gangsta rap but if he wants to act like a gangsta some times he can cause the bottom line is nobody is gonna do shit about it.
I dont know what kind of misguided ideas people have about the the N word. To say that you not only have to be black but also have to grow up in the ghetto is plain ignorant. You act like rich black people ancestors were not called niggers back in the day. So just because they no longer live below the poverty line he loses all rights to the word? Sounds dumb to me. Also just because he sends shout outs to bloods does not mean he is hard. He just happens to know some bloods so he shouted them out in his music. No where in his lyrics did he himself say he was hard or a gangster. Him saying the n word in no way perpetrates him being hard either.
@Tone, “To say that you not only have to be black but also have to grow up in the ghetto is plain ignorant.”
Sooo then what do you have to be? Whats the criteria to use it? You tell me. Is anyone allowed to say it?
It was never stated you HAD to grow up in the ghetto, what was said is, it is a word used as a term of endearment amongst inner city black youth in the ghetto. That is the origin of the ‘evolved’ word. We are not talking about the word ending in ER.
Would you disagree or agree that some people use it to fit in or sound cool and apart of ‘the hip hop culture’? Seems like a trend to claim blood or shout out soo-woo also… Im jus stating facts.
Pico Pres keeps making legitimate points, but no one seems to be able to be able to find points AGAINST those points. I think Marty Mcfly’s claim has to do with if you say something for a long time, that makes it true. William has been saying that he’s a coke dealer, but should he be believed…especially with the evidence proving otherwise? it’s kind of like when a child starts lying its first like 8 years of life. All of that child’s years of lying doesn’t make any of it true.
@Pauly Dee , it was never proven that Ross wasnt a drug dealer. What was proven was that he was a C.O. Do I personally believe he was a kingpin? NO but do I believe he probably moved a little bit of weight in his life? Yeah. 2nd it was never proven that Wayne is not a blood , what is a known fact is that Wayne is not an original blood from LA. Just clarifying but really who cares because to be honest , money gets more respect in the streets then hood credibility. You may think different but thats just my opinion and the rappers we talking about have alot more money then the O.G from your hood. Its a new day now so im done with this topic.
What do you mean what is the criteria? Should there be a criteria? Its widely accepted that if your black then you are allowed to say it. The only time anyone has a problem with it is when other races say the word which really does not make any sense seeing as how black people have made the word mean something different from the original slur that it came from. I really dont see how if it comes from a non black person it automatically has to be offensive.
And this saying the word to sound cool or be popular could be used against anyone even inner city black kids. The only reason people use words in the first place is that they think its cool so they put it in there vocabulary. Why do you think anyone says it? Its not because they parents told them to do it. They say it because it became cool to say it. It may have started in the ghetto but that does not mean the ghetto owns the word. That’s like saying only people from New york are allowed to rap since it was started there and everyone else who raps is doing it to fit in.
As far as bloods and gang affiliation yeah i can see that as someone just trying to fit in since gangs are usually associated with hip hop but its not like drake says he is in the gang. He just says he has homies in the bloods and he is saying whats up to them.
