Jay-Z: Rap Is Poetry (Video)

Speaking on his book Decoded, Shawn makes a case for rap being poetry. You know, just in case Fox News decides to brings back this topic after Eric Bolling is done making an ass out of himself. OH HAI AURA.

“Some of the things Biggie wrote,” says Jay-Z, “if you take those lyrics and pull them away from music and put them up on the wall, someone will say, ‘This is genius…this is genius work.’”

That Biggie line is like the worst line EVER. Great lyricist, a legend no doubt, but seriously, WTF was he thinking?

  11. Yo qb…biggie said that line in order to obtain shock value. Regardless, the line is like clever dumb lol

  12. I’d say most music in general is poetry. I do agree, though, that the rap genre is more of an art.

  13. Rap is poetry , just listen to Wyclefs song apocalypse or 80 bars. Or Lupes song Glory or every Jay z album. Just because you dont relate to the type of life experience Jayz comes from doesnt mean what hes saying doesnt contain Jewels.

  14. i knew ppl couldnt wait to hate on a 1:31 jay-s promo clip lol. jay is about expanding rap to the masses and establishing it as a respectable culture. thats called progression. but they hate you when your smarter.

  15. Yes, Marty, that is poetry. But the MAJORITY of it isn’t. (ie Lil B, Soulja Boi,etc) Still agree the genre is still something extreme

  16. (pushes up glasses) Biggie was trying to emphasize just HOW beautiful this woman was and at what lengths he would go to to attain her.

  17. check out my poetry site at whisperingwords.com

  18. order my book Ayana Finds Her Beauty, a book about a young girl with low self esteem due to the color of her skin. You can buy it online at authorhouse.com By Sylvia A. Turner

  19. Wasnt that Biggie line a Richard Pryor joke? he was just relaying it to the masses trying to be funny.

  21. Of course rap is poetry! Jay-Z just know realizing this? You hear it everyday from all the best rappers in the game now. In hip hop, you gotta be real and authentic and it speak from the heart, just like poetry. That’s why rap and poetry are so alike!
In the old days, our culture had poets like Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Now, the rappers are the poets! Our culture is represented by so many great minds. We have Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross, Gucci. They are like the poets who speak so much knowledge to all the kids. That’s why all the kids love them and look up to them so much!
They wouldn’t be on top if they weren’t the best that we have in our culture. Wayne for example puts such exquisite poetry on the track time after time. “I’m so high, I can eat a star”
Come on, and people wanna hate on rappers when they are really like poets!

  23. Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature’s law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it’s dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

  24. @pauly , yeah I know most of these rappers shouldnt be on the mic cause they sound like clowns to real people.

  25. @truehoptunes
You are either a troll, or a idiot?I don’t know. Either way…what you said is fucking STUPID! “Wayne, Rick Ross and Gucci Mane are poets and the best we have”? WTF! NIGGA YOU ARE FUCKING STUPID. They are at the top because of stupid people like you that support stupidity and ignorance that those niggas sell.

  26. Rakim a king…for real. Niggaz should respect him more these days.

  27. lol truhoptunes is being sarcastic!

Conceive true deception multiplied a million fold
Visualize the yin and yang in a battle so intense
    that we get em confused
The resident evil specialize in misconstruing
We wanna be at a presidential level — what are we doing?
Foolin ourself, clownin ourself, playin ourself
    By not bein ourself
We can’t babble no more than we can bob our head offbeat
Nimrod by the time we forty cause we can’t get our meat
While we ask no reason for the misplacement of the season
look at the picture that’s painted
Tainted as the mind who’s blinded to the point
where Sodomites get all the rights
We fall for fights with fisticuffs
Get pissed enough to miss the bus
It disgusts me to see my folks run up on
I say stand up on deception of time all of Revelations
And recognize this mind on the reality of horror
