@Mixtapes suck… actually makes a very good point. Mixtapes are doing more BAD for rap then GOOD. His point is that if you are an established artist and in a good position to release albums, then DONT MAKE MIXTAPES!
#1, its encouraging fans to get music for free. So when an artist puts out an album, that same mentality applys and the fan is going to go support the album for free as well. #2, its gives the label a good reason not to put out quality artists. With how the mixtape game is now, a label can try to make you do ANYTHING they want for you to be mainstream and if you don’t agree to it, you can leave and still make a career off mixtapes. But that’s ultimately not in the best interest of the artist cuz then they won’t be able to reach the masses.
Mixtapes are waste of music PERIOD. Why put out free music, especially when you have material good enough to be an album?? Albums are long term, mixtapes are short term! (Granted, there are a few exceptions) That’s why you don’t see many legit mainstream artists put out mixtapes. Jay-Z doesn’t, Kanye doesn’t, Nas put out like one, only cuz of label issues, Lupe had a series out before he got signed so he doesn’t count. Ludacris doesn’t.
It’s simply ridiculous that someone Fabolous to still be putting out mixtapes. Even someone like J. Cole who has all Album quality music! So yeah, mixtapes do kinda suck.

They both have had their albums ready for YEARS now, but instead both of them have been forced to release 4-5 ALBUM quality mixtapes over the past 2 years, just to stay “relevant to these “closeminded” fans you speak of.
And yeah I realize Luda has put out mixtapes, but I mean artists who are signed that CONSISTENTLY put out mixtapes. None of those people you named put out mixtapes on a consistent basis, nor do they have to. And even if they do, its not by choice and only cuz of their label situation (like Jeezy) that they have to put em out.

Any album that doesnt go platinum is not gonna make the label happy , you mite not wanna hear it but its the truth. Now for mixtapes depending on whether the music serves a purpose should be the deciding factor before a artists puts one out.
