Nas Scraps Lost tapes 2 (Video)

During a sit down with Sway from MTV, Nas says that he is no longer releasing Lost Tapes 2 due to issues with Def Jam. Also, after the jump he speaks on working with No I.D. and gives his thoughts on the Common/White House fuckery

Ignorant grandparents.

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. Why is someone like Nas still on a record label? There are new independent artists who have their own labels, making money, releasing whatever the fuck they want. I guess it’s just something I’ll never understand about the music business.

  3. GODDAMN, It’s a sad day today. 2012 is happening forreal now.

    *cries gangsta tears*

    This can’t be life…..f***school

  4. *cries gangster tears* i laughed at this for a while
this is some ole bullshit tho

  5. Let’s be real, fuck Def Jam…

  6. I was just on def jams wiki, and saw DJ KHALED was recently elected president.

    smh.

  7. @Chi2la23 , probably its because Nas is too big of an artist to move independent. Anyway I hope Nas gets that fire back because he never seems excited about making music anymore. I need that It was written , I Am – Nas back.

  8. @Gordon B. Co-Muthafucking-sign
@Im- See? 2012 Is True. Shit just ain’t right no more, man.

  9. @ChiLA23… Nas is still on a major label because he wants his music to be released for the masses to hear! And even with minimal promotion while on Def Jam and being someone like Nas, people will at least hear about whatever Nas drops.
When you’re on an independent label NOBODY HEARS YOUR MUSIC outside your core fanbase. (unless you put out a radio friendly song i.e. Lloyd Banks BBB). Nobody will check for you (stupid I know, but the truth). Yeah, you can still make more then enough money and feed your family, but the music is not going to be heard.
If you want to stay relevant in the eyes of these fans, you HAVE to be on a major label. Otherwise they will forget you and say you wack cuz the fans are too fickle now. But if anybody can pull off an long term independent run, it would be Nas, just based on his name

  10. you forgot about the video where he talks about Frank Ocean… faggot

  11. FUCK! I was excited about this! >=(

  12. whats this about nas actually needing the promotion and money
man i never met a guy who even slightly knew hip hop nevermind a real head who didnt know about new nas projects or nas songs

    he doesnt need the advertising

nas do it for the fans
    get excited
    drop it as a mixtape
    make a f*****n sick new album too<3

  13. nas doesnt get promoted anyway.. cant remember the last time i was like woah new nas project it feels like his stuff is independent already..but he needs the major outlet..

also y am i not suprised lost tapes 2 is not coming out..ive learnt to just bump my old records of nas/music i like and not expect another miracle but if one comes..go grab it!

  14. @TrueHopTunes: ever heard of Immortal Technique or Tech N9ne? There’s no reason for a certified legend like Nas, who has a much bigger fanbase than the guys I mentioned, to stay on a major label. He’s already established, everybody knows about him.

  15. *cries gangsta tears*
    ————————
    dead

  16. Damn, Nas and No I.D. working together? A dream comes true, I can’t wait for this new album, the music he has released recently was dope as fuck!

  17. No independent label can do what Def Jam can do , lets be serious. A major is a machine already built in the entertainment business with billions of dollars. A independent is not cause what takes years for artists like Tech N9ne and Immortal Technique and Atmosphere to do , a major can do in a week. Its not a shot at those artists but its just true and Nas doesnt have the money or the manpower to do on his own what Def Jam can do.

  18. C’mon let’s be real. Everybody knows who Nas is. He’s an established artist. He is probably not going to win any new fans. I look at it like this. If he was independent he wouldn’t have the pressure of trying to make Def Jam happy. He could actually focus on making one dope ass album, working with the likes of Primo, Qtip, Large P, Pete Rock, L.E.S.,etc. You know what I’m getting at. I know it’s record label politics keeping from something like that happening.

  19. I cried when I saw this

  20. FFFFUUUCCCKKK… n i was just listenin to Lost Tapes yesterday n thinkin “wtf happened to part 2″… shit man… well, that sucks… maybe itll get released eventually (hopefully!)

  21. Nas getting new fans is not the point because the fans dont buy albums unless its hyped up for months before its release. If fans cared about dope hip hop then OB4CL2 should have at least went platinum. Def Jam can put Nas on every show on BET and MTV and in all the magazines and all over the net and put his singles on radio in one week. Independently he could not do that. You cant blame a major for making crossover music because thats what people are buying. If Nas did a album with all those producers you named fans would not buy it unless they saw him on 106n Park and heard him in the club first. I buy music because its good not because of hype but the kids dont think like that. They want hype first and good music 2nd and thats what a major can do , create hype. Not to mention actually put CDs in stores and not just for download or for being sold at shows and speaking of shows , Def Jam puts artists on tour around the globe in packed venues. Im not saying Def Jam is the greatest choice for Nas but there track record is impressive as far as sales.

  22. Real talk, Nas should buy out his contract and sign with Shady in my opinion. It seems like that is one of few labels that give their artist creative control to deliver what the core fanbase expects. At this point, Nas is not gonna get any new fans. If you dont know Nas for what he’s done already, you don’t need to know Nas now cause his new shit does not equate to the level of genius he has already dropped. So fuck it and fuck Def Jam. Distant Relatives was one of the most slept on albums of 2010 commercially but the core fan base appreciated it. Cut out these Def Jam manufacturing factory clown and get with someone who can give you freeeeeeeeee!! Jay signed Nas to Def Jam then Jay bounced. Was that not a warning sign? You didnt just start working together. Its been damn near 5 years. How many Def Jam artists have come and gone. MOTHAFUCKER SHIT BALLS ASS IMPREGNATE!! Fuck Def Jam and Fuck Atlantic. Why do we as fans see the shit so much clearer than Nas does? Why hasn’t God’s Son pulled a Lupe and started a petition or an uproar? This is no way for a legend to be treated or to respond to the treatment. Unfortunately, no matter how much I think Nas won the infamous battle with Jay, Jay will be considered a winner for how he picked himself back up and capitalized and owned his shit. Nas is an incredible mc, but as a business minded person or brand, he’s a sucka and always has been. From Fila, Karl Kani, 310 Motor Shoes….all that shit was a fail. His 2 most public relationships…fail. Pick yourself up, nigga and pound on your fuckin chest for once! As a fan, I love you but you’re starting to look like the Knicks from 2000-2010. Alot of movement but no positive results and a losing record. But your fans are with you. Stop making us look bad for mentioning your name in 2011. FUCK!

  23. @ Mic Sorc , I feel where your coming from but you cant compare Shady to Def Jam.

  24. I’m sorry, but immediately following the signing to Shady, Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf got an XXL cover, released mad music, got on the Fast & Furious 5 soundtrack and are prepping up their release and when Royce asked Shady what should they do for the 2nd album, Slim told him “just do you”. Above all, I think thats what Nas would love to hear. Def Jam is ruining legacies, man. Ask LL, Method Man, Redman, EPMD, and all the other greats. Def Jam is all about hits and Nas dont make hits, he makes history. Def Jam dont give a fuck about that, so yeah, Def Jam dont compare to the freedom Shady can give. On top of that, Eminem has his own SHADE45 satellite radio station which would bump Nas shit all day. They do it for Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf, so WTF? Why not? It could NOT possibly be any worse. Cause in 5 years with Def Jam, we got 2 Nas albums. 2 albums in 5 years, nigga, I can divide….

  25. Def Jam didnt ruin those artists legacies , they help create them. Def Jams biggest albums were underground classics from LL , Redman and Method Man. Shady sold alot of records on his own but as for selling other artists I dont know cause only 50 cent was doing it big. Def Jam has reached platinum status more then 100 times with several different albums that were not commercial.

  26. Wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Correction , they were commercial cause of hype but lyrically and musically Def Jam dropped alot of heat. ILL come back and give you a history lesson on the most influential and successful albums from Def Jam in about 20 mins.

  28. I understand, there was a time when they were a great hiphop label. They gave voices to many artists like DMX, Def Squad, Foxy, Red & Mef and all them cats mentioned above. But you gotta admit, Def Jam is just not the same. Instead of helping to push great albums, they’ve become a hit factory. Big Sean said it himself. During a meeting with LA Reid while LA was there, dude said “Man, I’m about hits.” Def Jam dont care about your socially conscious, political music. They want hits and if you dont have enough hits, youre getting shelved. That is what majors TODAY do. It wasnt always like that, but today, its about manufacturing hits. I’m not taking away from what they DID, but from what they DO now.

  29. ^^^^^ You Speak The Truth.

  30. Ok im not gonna talk about all the great success Def Jam has had because that would take too long cause LLs first album came out in 85 but if were gonna talk about artistic freedom you gotta remember that Def Jam put out Nas most controversial album in 08 The N word album and to be honest if I was Def Jam I would have said change it because that album just wasnt that good to me but thats another subject. Im gonna list some albums that I like that Def Jam put out and that arent full of radio shit and is straight up DOPE hip hop.

    1. Method Man – Judgement Day , one of my favorite albums
    2. Onyx – Shut em down , crazy
    3. Redman – Docs the name >> anything from Tyler
    4. Slick Rick – The art of storytelling , this album is incredible
    5. EPMD – Out of business = 2DBZ
    6. LL cool J – G.O.A.T = Dopeness
    7. Camron – Purple Haze = funniest punchlines ever like “I put my dick on her nose , now shes cock eyed.
    8. Ghostface – Pretty Toney , slept on
    9. Jayz – Life and Times , you already know
    10. All Kanyes albums = nuff said
    11. Young Jeezy – Lets get it TM101 , just for the block

This is why I dont think Def Jam is pressuring Nas to change his music , cause they have a history of putting out dope shit and Shady dont compare

  31. Great scott, Marty, I hear you, but there has been a great shift in the past 2-3 years. It was bad enough when ringtones were poppin, but we’re already a generation past ringtones and now its all about singles. Singles sell. Def Jam aint selling album material no more. Especially if u can download songs individually off itunes. Kanye’s most recent album, sure, its worth 9.99 total purchase price off itunes. But if any of the artists mentioned in your list album today dropped an album, chances are consumers would only purchase 2-4 songs max individually off each project. So now the label just spent marketing dollars on pushing a complete album where 4 $0.99 cent radio singles sold and that leaves them stuck like chuck. I’m 99.9% positive the ideal product for Def Jam would be a complete album full of Black and Yellows or Beemer, Benz or Bentleys. Thats where their revenue is, not with hearing about black power and black struggle. They dont want hip-hop, they want something for the gift shop and that puts an artist like Nas at a disadvantage. They are just not the same anymore, my g.

  32. I just want to see what happens when Jay Elect finally drops a album cause if he would have come out in the 90s he would have probably went diamond. Im staying on my hip hop shit instead of waiting to see what artists gets a cosign before becoming a fan. Actual Proof = best new artists if heard on this site this year.

  33. marty mcfly always droppin hella knowledge 4 the lil niggas lol

  34. damn was mad excited for this cuz i thought it would be my generation’s nas classic, with that real real dope feel you don’t get from nas’ albums lately. early 90s’ had illmatic/it was written, early 2000s’ had lost tapes vol 1. The current generation of nas fans deserved this because we’ve been feignin for somethin like it. and don’t get me wrong about nas’ recent stuff, it’s still on another level than the hip-hop game imo.

  35. why is sway always wearing a hat? Its cool to like hats but damn dude crossed over the WEIRD meter a long time ago. and dont tell me he’s muslim cause muslims dont wear brimmed beanies.

  36. Y’all gotta understand its not about whats hot and what’s not. The industry and labels like Def Jam determines what’s hot! Def Jam won’t put out a Nas record because its not in tune with todays hip hop. They won’t try to change him up and make him go pop because, #1 Nas would never agree to that. #2 They won’t play these games with Nas because they know he’s capable of exposing the industry and all the fake faggot shxt going on
    *Follow @ ma_THT

  37. And Plus, they control what gets played on the radio. They could play Nas on the radio 100 times a day if they wanted but they never would do that smh. Their destroying the world
