Common is pro black, like every other black person whose ever spoken for an oppressed people.
He didn’t condone, cop killing. But he condoned not allowing your enemy to kill you.
If you cannot relate to his words, that doesn’t make them wrong, it simply means you cannot relate.
Is he controversial because his opinion and views differ from that of “privledged” whites?
Of all the positive songs Common has made in his lifetime, the people at Fox News chose to pinpoint those which would make there story relevant.
I suppose inviting Erykah Badu would be “controversial” as well because of her “Window Seat” video.
No one is perfect, but continuing to allow the media to cast our brothers and sisters in a negative light is unacceptable.
You know what they did to make Assata Shakur look guilty? The ran her name and reputation thru the mud, with proported stories made up by the government and powers that be.

The white house ideally represents something more than just “us against them” perspective which is essentially what FOX news was arguing. Common, more times than not, holds a pro-black and at times anti-white perspective which is what a racist person does.
The issue isn’t that Common is a poet or that he’s speaking his mind. The issue is that the White House has elected him as a representative of poetry.

If you weigh Commons good messages vs the songs looked at as being bad for the youth then the good side clearly out weighs the bad. Normally an American president has enough common sense to choose someone a little more politically correct. But then again Obama has a history of belonging to ACON, and associating with communist friends also. Both Obama and Common support racist, white hating people like Pastor Jeremiah Wright.
