Amazing. Still amazes me how Biggie is generally the more popular one. Not hatin on Biggie, but 2pac was way more thought provoking and actually tried to spread knowledge.

how has eminem had more of an effect on the culture? all he talked about was rape and what odd future talks about now, and that was when he was considered good. nowadays he just yells on his tracks about how he wants dre’s dick. i don’t call that having an impact on hip hop culture.
Em has bigger effect on white people not on the people who really put they self on the line for hip hop. The most classic albums in hip hop was about black life and black culture. Not about silly jokes like Ems first shit ( no diss to white people ) and Em did not have a bigger effect on the culture because Pacs life is hip hop , not just his music. Alot of rappers make hip hop music but they real life is not what the culture is about.
Em’s the MAIN reason hip-hop transcended into pop culture. I could care less about your preference on the effects both Em and Pac had on the culture, to say Pac had a GREATER impact, especially when the impact was limited to a portion of a minority in America is a little stupid.
I say Pac had a bigger effect cause Em is just a rapper. Pac was a rapper , a revolutionary , a actor in films and his real life story has an effect on people more so then his music. People relate to your story. If a rapper has skills thats great but I wanna know what your life is about outside of music. What are you great at that doesnt have to do with music and thats why Pac has a bigger effect. Em has bigger sales , Pac was greater then just selling records.
and hip hop already transcended into pop culture before Em because Run Dmc and Public enemy , Ice Cube and many other rappers were on their 3rd or 4th world tour with rock bands before Em. Then you got P diddy who was making different forms of hip pop and touring off it way before EM.

I didn’t say Em was the only one, i said he was the MAIN one, the catalyst, and the Beastie Boys had a bigger affect than most if not all the artists and groups you mentioned.

The beastie boys did they thing no doubt. However I dont think Em was all those same things Pac was because Em did one movie playing himself. Pac did alot of movies playing different characters. Pac was the son of a black panther and was raised around people who were in the fight for civil rights and other people whos names are in history as far as black resistance and revolution. Pac had the respect of many different parts of the country and the bullet wounds to prove his struggle of trying to make it. Em had a rough life but not to the extend of Pacs.

@Mega D , yes hip hop is for everybody no matter what your color but you still have to acknowledge the fact that alot of what are in these songs are struggles that go far beyond just family problems and alot of these songs are the stories of one race in particular. Its just the way it is and I dont think you should say someone is an equal representative of the culture unless something in their real life story is something of greatness before they blew up.
The thing that separates 2Pac from Eminem is cultural impact. I understand that Eminem took hip hop straight to suburbia, which is significant, but 2Pac was a threat. Eminem caught criticism from the offended white culture, 2Pac scared people. 2Pac was public enemy number 1 because he was so captivating and articulate. Sure, Eminem created controversy, but it was not deliberate. 2Pac came out against authority, establishment, whatever and embraced his blackness, where Eminem resented being the “white rapper.” To summarize, 2Pac was intentional and calculated. Eminem was the product of the stereotyped white America, making him less threatening and less impactful.

Doesn’t matter if he was more thought provoking or not. Biggie was ten times the rapper Pac was, with all due respect. I like both of them but Biggie had better flow, his rhymes were better, his songs generally were of better quality, he had better production. The only thing bad you can say about Biggie is that he mostly rapped about “negative” stuff (not that Pac didn’t rap about negative shit but early in his career his songs were uplifting) and that he lacked the work ethic of Pac. Honestly, I’ve never been wowed by Pac the same way I was wowed the first time I heard Gimme the Loot or 10 Crack Commandments or You’re Nobody Til Somebody Kills You, My Downfall, The What, Juicy, Suicidal Thoughts, Ready to Die (the song), Things Done Changed, Who Shot Ya, Kick In the Door. Wow, I just named like 20 songs but still.
Biggie’s 70 or songs > Pac’s 500 songs. Yeah I said it.
Marty, I know where you’re coming from. BUT. Yea “alot of these songs are the stories of one race in particular” no doubt. But that’s because most rappers are of the particular race. So maybe Pac’s bigger in hip hop because hip hop is black culture, but my arguement was that Em’s the bigger icon. More people know & relate to that shit than they do to thug life, only because the white population is bigger than the black pop. You do know most album sales are white people right? so therefore most hip hop fans are white, so saying Em’s unrelatable is wrong.

Em made it more spread out, but white folks been playin 2pac since before Shady came on. Em made it bigger, but Pac made it cool ta talk about social issues like rape & female empowerment (event hough he made songs about bitches too), and so that alone is bigger than making an album that white kids’ll play. Pac changed the game, Em made it “ok” for white people to listen to hip hop.

Of course you can say Big was a better rapper then Pac but like I said earlier Pac had other things to worry about other then rap. Pac had a career in acting to think about plus since Pac was 16 he was a community organizer and he was invited to several different rallies and speeches around the country to be apart of discussions about progression. Pac was also a controversial figure in the media and somewhat of a political prisoner because of his beliefs. On top of all that he had to think about his rap career , so if Big rapped better thats cool cause Pac had alot more on his plate to work on other then just music.
Also Pacs influence is hard to measure correctly because Pac was out years before Em and Pacs music stretched around the world not just in the suburbs of america. Pac had young and old fans and people who were locked up and still are that were fans. Ems impact is easier to measure because your just looking at numbers and impact since 2000 in the rap world. With Pac you have to consider the fact that his fanbase started in the early 90s and not all of his fanbase bought all his records because in the hood back then people in one house didnt buy seperate copies of an album because they couldnt afford it so they bought one copy and the whole family , sometimes more then one family would listen to that one copy. So he had alot of fans that werent recored in sales before his All Eyes On Me album. Plus his fanbase wasnt just rap fans cause some people liked him because of his movies and there are people who were fans of Pacs music in other countries that didnt count as far as his sales because they didnt buy his record from american distributers. So you cant fully understand his impact but just know that people are still feeling him years after his death and that says alot.

Get a grip if you think Eminem is better or means more to society than 2pac. I’m white and from the burbs, and I’m telling you right now, just like Eminem would tell you if you asked him, 2pac is the greatest of all time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is probably too sheltered, young, or ignorant to wrap the proper context around everything that 2pac meant to an entire genre of music and generation of people.
Tupac, Eminem, and Biggie are all amazing and unique. Personally i think Biggie was the best out of the 3 of them, he just didn’t have the message that Tupac had. Tupac (in my opinion)has been the most influential on hiphop as a whole, but musically I would say Eminem and Biggie are better. Eminem has helped keep hiphop alive, but at the same time has really helped spawn (unintentionally) the faggs who are ruining hiphop. If you ask a kid today who the greatest oldschool rapper is he will probably tell you Eminem…thats sad because Em isnt oldschool, and most kids now really have never listened to Tupac or Biggie.

hahaha this is so phuckin true….people on this blog are arguing that Eminem allowed white people to feel safe to listen to rap music which is true, but in the other hand all the other Black rappers seem to have more white fans then black….if you don’t believe me just look at a concert from any rapper and there you go mostly white people.Not saying that’s a bad thing either.
