Rally For Big Pun Pl. Renaming In the South Bronx (Video)

This is (2)dope: Christopher “Big Pun” Rios’ family and friends recently held a rally to have the city rename 163rd & Rogers Pl. in the Boogie Down to Big Pun Place. For those who know, this is also the same corner where the legendary TATS Cru threw up a memorial piece for Pun which has changed a few times over the years. This is just right around the block where I used to stay at in the BX too; 163rd & Prospect. If you’d like to see a push for this renaming to take place, sign the petition here. Props to B. Dot for the heads up.

  1. wait wait wait. big pun the nigga that used to beat his wife unmercifally?
    fuck big pun

  2. ^^^ So you saying you been living your whole life without sin? Anybody can point out bad shit about anybody but that dont erase what he did in the game.

  3. Big Pun is in my top 3 and Hip-Hop has pretty much been what I live for since I was 8 or 9. As much as I think Hip-Hop deserves way more respect, I can’t rock with this. If they do it, that’s cool. There are way more people who had a far more tangible contribution to society than the late great. Until the city I live in has more than just a Malcolm X & Martin Luther King jr. BLVD, I can’t concern myself with this. I know NY got Garvey, Clayton, etc. But until Pedro Albizu, Fred Hampton, Maya Angelou have streets named after them, stop it. The Black and Latin communities place way too much emphasis on our pop culture icons. This is a major reason why we’ve fallen behind in current society. *steps off soap box*

  4. ayo kill yourself tooka for talkin shit like that the man lived a life of his own so eat a dick. liza was ride or die anyway you dont know shit of what you talk motherfucker so keep it at that- bx all day

  5. He wasn’t even a great emcee. He was above average. He doesn’t deserve a street named after him even if you’re disregarding the fact that he was a POS in real life. I agree with Jiz.

  6. Iza, you are obviously a retard, so I will spare you a tongue-lashing on Pun’s greatness…

  7. Didn’t his wife cheat on him with his BROTHER?

    Not justifying anything, just sayin’…

  8. @ Jiz , I understand where your coming from but I think your underestimating the power of music. The people today are so unfamiliar with the leaders and intellectuals you named because alot of what they said and stood for took place before this generation was born or was old enough to appreciate people in history. Plus honestly I think those people are too legendary to just have a street named after them , that will probably have liquor stores on them instead of libraries anyway. Music gives off a vibration that even deaf people can feel and understand. People still feel Big Pun today and have memories that go with his music. Like I can vividly remember coming home from school and listening to his album for the first time and being surprised he had Black Thought and Wycelf and Busta rhymes on it. Gotta respect it

  9. @Iza , You just sound crazy !!! Go listen to Capital Punishment again and pretend its 1998 and realize Pun was killin shit.

  10. Pun was one of the greatest of all time but he was still a piece of shit outside of his rap career and in no way deserves a street named after him. Hes not a role model or even a moral person. MLK blvd and …. Big Pun Place? lol gasface

  11. im gonna agree with the original post.

  12. @ Huh?
No. Pun didn’t have a brother, and Liza (his wife) was too much of a prisoner to cheat. Ar you snorting blocks?

  13. And FTR, He should NOT have a street named after him.

  14. Yo if this really happens it’ll be 2 dope as mentioned. I used to stay not too far from there hunts point/spofford whats good?! Lets make this history.

  15. How about naming a street after KRS-ONE? While he’s alive?

I love Pun and what he means to Latinos in Hip Hop and the Bronx as a boro, but lets keep it real, What did he do for the community as a whole? or his family? If he would’ve done the right thing with his money, maybe they wouldn’t be in & out of homeless shelters. I ride by that spot everyday to & from work on the 2 train, and changing the street sign aint gonna do shit.
I’m for it if it helps his family (widow & children).

  16. @ marty mcfly
I feel what you’re sayin. I remember standin in line @ Tower Records to cop his first joint the night before it came out (with the paper cassette box.haha). I def don’t underestimate the power of music, tho. But I guess my question to you would be, other than being somebody who came from nothing and made history in hip-hop as the first Latino to go platinum, what was the significant contribution he made to us? To be appreciated while you’re alive and revered when you’re dead is the most an artist can ask for. If you had to sum up the OVERALL message in his music, in one short statement (I know that’s hard to do with any artist), How positive would it be?

  17. Oh, and Iza, you’re buggin! I don’t think Pun bein one of the greatest can even be disputed. You might need to upgrade your iTunes, lil homie.

  18. This is so wack, haha.

  19. Good Rapper, No street named after him please

  20. @ Jiz

Big Pun was a MC not a politician so I dont know what more you wouldve wanted him to do for the latino community. The reaction people have 100% Puerto Rico at the parade in NY and the appreciation people have for his first album is enough. Speaking on the contents of his character and the substance of his music , even if you view it negatively still had a positive effect. People talking down on him because of his faults as a person is stupid because we all have our problems. If people want to have a street named after him then it must be something that the people feel should be respected.

  21. @ marty mcfly
You’re right he’s not a politician he’s a musician. A musician who made skits like Tasters Choice, Uncensored, songs like That Nigga Shit, Off Wit His Head, etc. All shit I love but doesn’t exactly make him a good candidate for a street name. If we’re givin rappers streets, let’s get a Mos Def Ave., a Chuck D lane, a KRS St., a Guru Pl. Like I said in my first comment, if they do it, cool. But If this is something that’s goin down, let’s be clear on what makes you a good candidate. Not just “he made ill music”. And I never spoke on his personal life cause I feel the same way you do. Yes, this is only my opinion but that’s all I can speak on. Agree to disagree, I guess.

  22. The fuck you mean “Am i snortin’ blocks”?

“I don’t owe nobody nothing Man, I gave that bitch a mill
I ain’t beating around the bush I’m just speakin’ on what’s real
I ain’t talkin on no bullshit Man, I’m talkin bout what’s real
I ain’t justifying beatings well she cheated on my Nills
Cheated with his brother God damn this bitch I’ll
Probably the reason my niggah left the will
Things you’d never know have mercy on his soul
BIG PUN One of the most realests I ever known” – from “heavenly father” by fat joe

  23. Just what I wrote!
    ARE YOU SNORTING BLOCKS??
He didnt have a brother. Just a bunch a fat sisters, 1 hot sister,a junkie mama and an abusive stepfather.
Pun lived a tragedy. But nothing justifies the kind of beatdowns he gave his wife. If she deserves that, then you leave the bitch.

Now go snort some more blocks and type up another Fat Joe verse for me.

  24. Signed the petition.. & Pun wasn’t just above average, his wordplay/lyricism >> RIP.

  25. First of all, I just asked a question. There’s no need to get all super aggressive on the internet. It’ll only make you look stupid.

Secondly, no one said what she did justified the beatings. I only asked the question because of the aforementioned verse.

Lastly, nope, I don’t snort blocks. Wouldn’t even know how.

I don’t see why he can’t have a street named after him, when we still have schools named after slave owners. *shrug*

  26. Then we agree.

    Now pass the coke nigga.

  27. and don’t reply unless you’re quoting Fat Joe.
